Belonging to the family Plumbaginaceae this species contains specialized secretory structures on the leaves and calyces. This study focused on the micromorphological, chemical and biological aspects of the species. Micromorphological studies revealed the presence of salt glands on the adaxial and abaxial surface of leaves and two types of trichomes on the calyces. “Transefer cells” were reported for the first time in the genus. The secretory process of the salt glands was further enhanced by the presence of mitochondria, ribosomes, vacuoles, dictyosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae. Histochemical and phytochemical studies revealed the presence of important secondary metabolites that possess many medicinal properties which were further analyzed by Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MC) identifying the composition of compounds in the leaf and calyx extracts. A novel attempt at synthesizing silver nanoparticles proved leaf and calyx extracts to be efficient reducing and capping agents that further displayed good antibacterial activity against gram- positive and gram-negative bacteria. -

The Alien Vascular Flora of Tuscany (Italy)
Quad. Mus. St. Nat. Livorno, 26: 43-78 (2015-2016) 43 The alien vascular fora of Tuscany (Italy): update and analysis VaLerio LaZZeri1 SUMMARY. Here it is provided the updated checklist of the alien vascular fora of Tuscany. Together with those taxa that are considered alien to the Tuscan vascular fora amounting to 510 units, also locally alien taxa and doubtfully aliens are reported in three additional checklists. The analysis of invasiveness shows that 241 taxa are casual, 219 naturalized and 50 invasive. Moreover, 13 taxa are new for the vascular fora of Tuscany, of which one is also new for the Euromediterranean area and two are new for the Mediterranean basin. Keywords: Vascular plants, Xenophytes, New records, Invasive species, Mediterranean. RIASSUNTO. Si fornisce la checklist aggiornata della fora vascolare aliena della regione Toscana. Insieme alla lista dei taxa che si considerano alieni per la Toscana che ammontano a 510 unità, si segnalano in tre ulteriori liste anche i taxa che si ritengono essere presenti nell’area di studio anche con popolazioni non autoctone o per i quali sussistono dubbi sull’effettiva autoctonicità. L’analisi dello status di invasività mostra che 241 taxa sono casuali, 219 naturalizzati e 50 invasivi. Inoltre, 13 taxa rappresentano una novità per la fora vascolare di Toscana, dei quali uno è nuovo anche per l’area Euromediterranea e altri due sono nuovi per il bacino del Mediterraneo. The DNA isolated was quantified using a spectrophotometer at the absorbance of λ260 nm and λ280 nm. Both the species given the best result with a DNA yield of 23.8µg/µl and 0.895µg/µl in Plumbago zeylanica and Plumbago indica respectively and produced a clear band on the agarose gel. The estimation of purity of the obtained DNA was concluded by analyzing the ratio of λ260 nm/λ280 nm of the Genomic DNA which was 1.94 and 2.0 for P. zeylanica L. and P. indica L. respectively. These results are of high quality as it is in the range of 1.8-2.0 by the present optimized protocol. Looking into natural resources, particularly products of plant origin, has become an exciting area of research in drug discovery and development. Aromatic plants are mainly exploited for essential oil extraction for applications in industries, for example, in cosmetics, flavoring and fragrance, spices, pesticides, repellents and herbal beverages. Although several medicinal plants have been studied to treat various conventional ailments only a handful studies are available on aromatic plants, especially for radioprotection. Many plant extracts have been reported to contain antioxidants that scavenge free radicals produced due to radiation exposure, thus imparting radioprotective efficacy. The present review focuses on a subset of medicinally important aromatic plants with radioprotective activity. Lay abstract: Aromatic plants have been used as natural medicines since prehistoric times. They are cur- rently mainly utilized for essential oil extraction and are widely used in cosmetics, flavoring and fragrance, spices, pesticides, repellent and herbal beverages. -

Especially the rural people in India are entirely reliant on herbal plants. Marius Nicușor GRIGORE1*, Constantin TOMA1 Abstract: Salt (chalk) glands of Plumbaginaceae represent interesting structures involved in the excretion of calcium carbonate outside plants’ organs, especially on leaves surfaces. These chalk-glands, nominated by some authors as ‘Licopoli’ or ‘Mettenius’ organs are also very important from taxonomical point of view. Their structure has been a matter of debate for decades and a historical analysis reveals that there are still some inconsistencies regarding the contributions of earlier botanists in discovering and describing chalk-glands. The present work tries to provide a picture of historical progress recorded in the 19th century related to investigation of these structures, focusing especially on the two important names usually mentioned in relation to them: Mettenius and Licopoli. In this respect, several useful clarifications are made, with emphasis on the role played by the two botanists in the stimulation of research interest for these glands among the generations of botanists to come. It possesses important activities like analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal, memory- inducing, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, larvicidal, anti-diabetic, anti-fertility, and immunosuppressive properties. The roots of P. zeylanica are also used as expectorant, anti- rheumatic, anti-scabies, appetite stimulant, anti-diarrhoeal, anti-periodic, anti-malarial and for the treatment of leprosy. Besides these the antioxidant value of this herbal plant has also been reported. These reports are very encouraging and indicate that herb should be studied more extensively for its therapeutic benefits.
