Board of Directors The Board of Directors consists of at least six representatives of the member churches, up to four representatives of the Board of Christian Aid and up to three other representatives endorsed by Christian Aid, with additional persons up to a maximum of 13 in each company. One quarter of the Directors retire each year by rotation. New Directors are nominated by the Nominations Committee and appointed by the members at the Annual General Meeting. When new Directors are appointed they take part in an induction programme where they are given an introduction to the work of Christian Aid Ireland, and provided with relevant information to enable them to fulfil their roles. The Board’s principal responsibilities include determining the overall strategy, policies, direction and goals of Christian Aid Ireland; protecting and promoting the identity and values of the charity and fulfilling their statutory responsibilities. For example, not so long ago it was believed that they speak six languages; then their number grew steadily, and now linguists number already thirty Dogon languages, conditionally united in the family of Dogon languages of the macro-family of Niger-Congo; it is possible that there are even more of them. The history of migrations on the Bandiagara Highlands and the adjoining plains also remains poorly understood. All existing hypotheses, one way or another, based on oral traditions (of- ten without specifying the informant and/or source). Only to a small extent are they based on archaeological data. In addition to the “common Dogon” historical tradition, which states that this people came to the Plateau around the turn of the 16th century, there are historical legends of individual villages, their neighbourhoods and even families. They can be very different from the ‘general’ version. From this point of view, two oral histories of the village of Endé are of great interest.
