LENT AND THE NUMBER FORTY| by Sr. Barbara Rund, OP Today’s gospel for the First Sunday of Lent speaks about Jesus in the desert for forty days. Jesus is reliving the life of Israel. Israel came through the Red Sea and was tested and tempted for forty years in the desert. Jesus came through the waters of bapsm and was tested and tempted for forty days in the desert. Jesus experienced the same temptaons that Israel faced, yet Jesus resisted the devil. During these forty days of Lent, we can resist our temptaons through prayer, fasng and charity (almsgiving). In the Preface for the First Sunday of Lent we prayed: “By abstaining forty long days from earthly food, he consecrated through his fast the paern of our Lenten The number forty in the Scriptures is usually associated observance and, by overturning all the snares of the with an opportunity for people to experience God’s ancient serpent, taught us to cast out the leaven of transforming power. In the Liturgical Year, the Season malice, so that, celebrang worthily the paschal of Lent provides forty days as a me of retreat to reflect Mystery, we might pass over at last to the eternal upon our lives and to become more like Christ. The paschal feast” (2011 Roman Missal p80). Gospel for Ash Wednesday offers three tools for us to use during Lent: almsgiving or charity, prayer and Next Week: Lent and Prayer fasng. Lent is our opportunity to use these tools to foster transformaon in our lives. Lent is forty days, so let’s begin by reflecng on the number forty. STEWARDSHIP THOUGHTS Bapsm and repentance is the common link in today’s Scripture readings. In the Book of Genesis, God enters a covenant with Noah and his descendants to never again devastate the earth with a flood. St. Peter, in the Second Reading, refers to Noah and the flood: … Eight in all, were saved through water. This prefigured bapsm, which saves you now.The sacrament of Bapsm forgives sin and calls us to discipleship in Christ. Through joy and stewardship, we act out this call in charity and love of God and neighbor. At Easter, we strengthen our discipleship by renewing our bapsmal promises, vowing to reject Satan and the glamour of evil in our lives. In the Gospel of St. Mark, Jesus holds firm against the devil’s temptaons in the desert. May we seek the Lord’s grace in mes of weakness so we, too, can avoid temptaon that leads to sin. This Lent, parcipate in the sacrament of Reconciliaon to prepare yourself for the Risen Christ. © Archdiocese of Detroit WWW.STHUGO.ORG 12 ST. HUGO OF THE HILLS | BLOOMFIELD HILLS

GOSPEL | MK 1: 12T15 The Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

And now Jesus is in the same place. Lent a er Lent, we too are invited into a barren, desolate place. Why do we always go to the desert? Throughout Scripture, the desert is a place of tesng. It's also a place of hiding and withdrawal. In the Old Testament, David fled into the wilderness to hide from READINGS | WEEK OF FEBRUARY 18TH , 2018 Saul, Elijah from Jezebel, and Jonah from God! In other Sunday 1st Sunday of Lent words, the desert is a place of "retreat." In Chrisan Gn 9:8R15/Ps 25:4R5, 6R7, 8R9 [cf. 10]/ circles, we use the word to describe a spiritual weekend 1 Pt 3:18R22/Mk 1:12R15 away. But its meaning comes from warfare, as we well know. To retreat means to draw back, to separate Monday Presidents Day oneself from the fighng.
