Winter 2016

To our wonderful Society Members,

I continue to reflect on our theme this year, “Moments of God’s Grace,” and how our founder Mary Virginia Merrick discovered moments of grace in the beauty and people around her. In doing this I thought defining “grace” would be a good exercise. I looked to various writings on the subject of grace. In the mind of St. Ignatius, one aspect of grace is finding God in all things. Some have described grace as “God-drenched” moments, encountering the goodness of God and being mindful of how God speaks to us in our daily lives. These beautiful thoughts on grace encourage me to open my eyes a bit wider to see all that God is providing in the world around me. I believe God invites us all to be tuned into God’s grace and nearness.

Those moments of God’s grace occur when we come together as Christ Child Society members at our various events and gatherings. A comment I have heard many times in my first few months as your CCS president is this, “One of the things I really love about our CCS of Pasadena chapter is the multi- generational nature of our group.” I have to say this was something I also found very attractive about our group when I joined. We have members who have been part of our Christ Child chapter for over forty years as well as members who have children still in diapers! When we attend events it is a blessing and grace to share stories of our chapter’s work over the years, share stories of our families and share stories of our faith. What a gift this is to us all. As we go into the many events of this season I invite you to share your stories with us by attending an event or two, reach out to a member you do not know and experience the richness of this precious group we are all a part of.

In honor of our founder Mary Virginia Merrick’s 150th birthday we have highlighted her life and spirituality in our monthly Happenings e-blasts. You can read in this newsletter about the events that have taken place to celebrate her life and mission these past few weeks. Please check out our website to see additional photos as well. If you have not done so already, I invite you to pray the prayer for her .

Lord God, in your special love for children, you chose to raise up Mary Virginia Merrick to be the servant of the poor children. In laboring to serve the young and those without hope because of the crushing weight of poverty, she proclaimed the love of your Son. She made her life’s work a demonstration that, ”nothing is ever too much to do for a child.”

Grant that her example of selfless charity and courageous virtue in the face of her suffering will inspire us to be generous in the service of others.

National Christ Child Society Convention Highlights - September 22nd – 24th

Lisa Barker writes: As a first time participant in the Christ Child Society National Convention I learned so much about this wonderful organization to which we all belong. Listening to members from other chapters describe all of the diverse programs that are in place nationwide, serving and supporting at risk children was inspiring. I was most impressed by the dedication and tireless effort that is constantly being put forward by the 6000 members of CCS. This incredible group of loving volunteers really does make a difference in children's lives. I also enjoyed hearing our own Pasadena member and past National President, Roseanne Anderson, educate us all about the cause to canonize our founder Mary Virginia Merrick. Finally, I made many new friends and had a really fun weekend. Christ Child members are a nice, friendly and loving group of women.

Liz Anderson writes: Representing the Pasadena Chapter as a delegate at the CCS National Convention this year was an inspiring experience. We spent a long weekend in Atlanta and fully appreciated the Southern hospitality that chapter so graciously offered us.

The National Christ Child Society Board did a tremendous putting together a three-day agenda that engaged our attention, informed our perspectives, invited discussion, and fostered creativity among a diverse group of members from all corners of the country. We shared stories of our programs, our challenges, and our successes, but most memorably we laughed a lot and cried some as well. Our fellow CCS members are doing amazing things to help needy children and their stories touched our hearts.

The keynote speaker was Julie Francavilla, who moved us all with her very powerful presentation on Communication. She urged us to “Be Bold” as we work to improve the lives of needy children. She reminded us that it’s time that we stop keeping the Christ Child Society the “best kept secret.” We learned tips for engaging through social media with other chapters and the NCCS Facebook site. Roseann Anderson presented an update on the Cause for Canonization for Mary Virginia Merrick. We witnessed the Denver Chapter as it received its Charter and cheered on many chapters that received recognition for successful programs. We learned how to use some of the tools National Christ Child Society has developed for us since the last Convention, including the Brand Values Matrix. We learned so much!

National Christ Child Society Convention cont.

Ann Sanders writes: After the conferences and annual meeting were completed all the CCS members present hopped onto a school bus and toured the Atlanta chapter’s award-winning project, Elizabeth’s Garden. This is a garden that allows special needs children to work and play in the garden, plus cook and eat what they grow. Despite the fact that it was quite hot and humid, we enjoyed putting on the hard hats and seeing the renovation work that was being done at the garden site. We then traveled to the Cathedral of Christ the King where we celebrated a truly inspiring mass with Atlanta’s Archbishop Wilton Gregory. The Archbishop thanked the members of the CCS around the country for the work being done to touch the lives of children. After mass, we enjoyed a lovely cocktail party at the home of an Atlanta chapter member, Kathy Thompson. The beautiful home and surroundings plus the warm welcome and sharing of the Atlanta members gave us another taste of Southern hospitality. At the closing banquet, we watched National President Anne Kelley from our Pasadena Chapter pass the gavel to our new National President, Marybeth Baucco from Cleveland. We also saw Carol Pickle assume the role of National President Elect! Pasadena is well represented in the National Board leadership.

We had eight members of our chapter present at the National Christ Child Convention: in addition to Lisa, Liz and myself, we were happy to have Roseann Anderson, Terry Clougherty, Anne Kelley, Carol Pickle, and Kacey Riley Richards joining us there. It was a treat to spend time together while meeting members from around the country. Please take a look at our CCS website for additional pictures from this year’s National Christ Child Convention.

A lot of Southern Hospitality from Atlanta, Georgia!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY VIRGINIA MERRICK! PASADENA CCS CELEBRATES YOU!

Members of the Tournament of Roses Royal Court are known for their contributions to the community. Surely, our Foundress, Mary Virginia Merrick, would have been crowned Rose Queen! Forget a local parade – She should be a ! Please pray for her Canonization.

Christ Child Society Chapters celebrated her philanthropy across the United States. Saturday, October 22nd, was National Make a Difference Day, a day of service founded by Points of Light 25 years ago. Mary’s birthday, November 2nd, falls close to Make a Difference Day so National Christ Child Society unanimously voted to honor her 150th birthday a little early.

Over 40 Christ Child Society chapters across the country coordinated a “Layettes of Love” day in her honor. Christ Child Society of Pasadena set up a variety of activities to inspire members to learn a new craft they can do throughout the year to make items for Layettes. Activities appealed to all ages and skill levels. They included learning to knit or crochet, making no-sew fleece blankets, learning to loom weave baby hats, embellishing onesies with ribbon, paint, or iron-on appliques, and bundling items for layettes. Donations of diapers, board books, yarn, toiletries and monetary proceeds were welcomed. We also had a table set up with information on the Cause for Canonization or Mary Virginia Merrick. Light refreshments were provided and included a birthday cake for Mary.

Forty-seven active participants enjoyed learning new crafts, sharing their craft, and making new friends.

Volunteers included members, daughters of members, friends of members, a granddaughter of a member, and friends of members’ daughters.

Additionally, we had 51 donors who gave monetary gifts, diapers, board books, toiletries, yarn, fleece, and beautifully knit items. We also had local businesses who donated – many thanks to Pavilions, Corner Bakery, Pasadena Sandwich Company, and Mayfield Senior School.

Several members said they liked the idea of the day and really enjoyed the activities and socializing. Even members who came by just to drop off a donation stayed, looked around, enjoyed a snack, and visited with others. Overall, there was a sense of joy in the room!

As we were wrapping up the day, the remaining committee members and volunteers agreed the day was very successful. General comments were that the looms were a huge hit and many ladies took looms home to work on more hats, it was great to see everyone trying new things, and it was great to get to know people working side-by-side. Ann Sanders, Chapter President, said at one point “there were three generations of women (high school teens, middle aged adults and senior members) sitting at the knitting table all happily chatting!” Participation of volunteers of all ages – from teens to 80+ years old – made the experience uniquely memorable.

We would like to acknowledge those members and community businesses who donated their time, talent and/or treasures to make this such a successful event. Their names are listed on the following pages, along with pictures to capture this special day.

Lots of aces and happy faces graced the 24th Annual Aces and Faces Tournament on October 4th! Eager players gathered at Annandale Golf Club to enjoy a day of bridge and a delicious lunch with old friends and new. Hopefully, at least 1 of them will be ready to play next year! The teams with highest (and lowest) scores were announced at the close of festivities and they claimed their coveted prizes! Christ Child Society Treasures Program

Our Dear Christ Child Members,

We held our first class of autumn 2016 On Wednesday, Oct. 5, at St. Andrews School. We have a darling class of 19 fifth graders. They were enthusiastic and participatory. Often, there would be so many hands in the air, we couldn’t call on everybody.

We are very honored that the principal of St. Andrews has asked if we will:

1. Come in November and coach the eighth graders with interview tips as they prepare to apply to high school; and

2. Return again in April to give the eighth graders a brush-up manners course as St. Andrews gets set to send them off into the world.

We are hoping to expand the program to Nativity School in El Monte in the spring. It’s all good!!

Layettes in the Works!

Hello Ladies!

Wow! All we can say is WOW! What a great start to our Layette meetings. The first meeting is always unpacking, rolling, and folding, in preparation for our first meeting to make layettes. And boy did we unpack! Cute little onesies, darling sleep and plays, new yellow receiving blankets, snap undershirts, the littlest socks, the whitest burp cloths and bibs, and many more items to give a baby a great start in life. Oh and the sweetest hats - these were done by our “hat girl” at home due to a broken foot! That was all done in less than 2 ½ hours! These girls are fast workers! We met new people and caught up on family happenings with our older friends! Then the next week we packed up Layettes. With your help, we got all 110 done for this month! To say we had a great time would be an understatement! So many fun stories and time were shared, not to mention treats and wonderful hot coffee and tea! I can hardly wait until next month to meet some more friends!!

We do want to give a special mention to our knitters/crocheters. We could not put a handmade item in each bag without you. The extra loving touch is just wonderful! To you all we say THANK YOU!!

Sue and I were asked if we know the moms who receive the layettes. Sadly, we don’t. We drop off the Layettes to many places that help with new moms. We trust them to give the Layettes out to the moms in need. One of those place is Right to Life right here on North Lake Avenue. We call Anne Hennessy and see how many she needs, then we take them to her. That is as far as we go, and Anne takes it from there. Anne is a member of Christ Child Society as well. You can learn more about her work here http://rtllsc.org/index.php

Another one of our recipients is the St. Anne Home. Their story is incredible! They help so many new moms and their families. I encourage you to read about their mission here: http://www.stannes.org/contact-us/. They are doing wonderful things for mom and baby! We are so blessed to be able to make the Layettes and give them to these programs! If you know of any other places out there that we have missed, just give us a call. Sue and I are always looking for places to spread the love of Layettes and the Christ Child!

We also would like to thank everyone who has donated board books to go into the Layettes. These are a great addition! Reading to a child has great benefits!

We were just talking about last Christ Child Christmas brunch, and about how generous our members are! The diapers were amazing (not to mention the exercise we got moving them up to the Layette room at St Andrews)! We are hoping for a repeat this year, to work off the holiday pounds and to add diapers into our Layettes! Our members are the most generous!

We will be selling cards of sponsorship for Layettes. For a donation of $50.00, you can let your mom, dad, sister, brother or friend know that you donated a Layette in their name, with a handmade card from us!

That's it from Layettes this month. We hope to see you at the next Layette meeting - that’s where the fun is!!!!
