Abstract Dance has the power to express emotion and facilitate understanding in a way that is unlike any other art form. With embodied knowledge and raw physicality, dance has great potential to be a powerful tool for activism. It is with this core belief that I choreograph pieces and dance films for my company, Awaken Dance Theater. These beliefs also influence my teaching, in pushing for a culturally relevant curriculum. Through choreography and film, this thesis project explores a topic which is historically underrepresented in art: womens’ experiences surrounding fertility and childbearing. Such choices and issues surrounding childbearing are hugely impactful on women’s lives. Infertility, abortion, pregnancy loss, childless by choice, and even healthy pregnancies are often stigmatized and shunned by society at large, and portrayed insensitively and inaccurately by the typically male-dominated media. In my thesis, I aim to bring womens’ own voices to light. With each of five female dancers exemplifying one of the aforementioned issues, I explore gestures based on research and marry those findings with personal experience through movement and media. The performative portion of my thesis includes a personal film in response to my experience with miscarriage as well as a choreographed work with five female dancers from Awaken Dance Theater. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, my live performance was unfortunately cancelled. A Jaime, no sólo porque su paciencia sin límites consiguió opacar la de Job, sino porque con sus afectos (en la definición hasta colonial del término) le supo pintar tantos sentidos al concepto de «director» que ningún compendio de diccionarios de la lengua española podría albergar sus acepciones. Sin necesidad de apelar al hipérbole barroco, puedo afirmar sin duda alguna que nunca nadie me había obsequiado tantas lecciones, de tantas cosas, en tan corto tiempo. Duele saber que no hay pregrados en literatura, ni lecturas citables, ni palabras robadas que puedan expresar a cabalidad mi agradecimiento. Y, cómo no, a ustedes, abuelos. Porque aunque tuve que ir hasta el pasado, atiborrar cientos de hojas y beber toneladas de cafeína, finalmente comprendí que las explicaciones que estaba desesperadamente buscando siempre estuvieron ahí: no en sus dolores o en sus muertes, sino en sus vidas… en sus legados… y, sobre todo, en su memoria que refutando a un gran escritor— nunca en olvido se convertirá. -

Dr. EL Putnam “Performing Pregnant: An Aesthetic Investigation of Pregnancy” Introduction In 2011, artist Marni Kotak presented The Birth of Baby X, a durational performance piece that culminated in the live birth of her son, Ajax. For this work, she transformed the Microscope Gallery in Brooklyn, NY into a birthing center, including various personal, practical, and symbolic items, such as an inflatable birthing pool, a kitchenette, and two ten foot trophies—one for Baby X for being born and the other for Kotak for giving birth. She also incorporated snapshots from her pregnancy and baby shower that were made into wallpaper, rugs, sheets, blankets, and a serving tray, making her birthing centerturning the room into an immersive photographic album. Interspersed throughthroughout the installation, there were a number of personal relics, like her grandmother’s bed and her mother’s rocking chair, fleshing out this collection to contain the traces of her family’s genealogy. -

As an art educator and an art historian in a combined division of Visual Culture & Gender, Vol. 2, 2007 Art Education and Art History at the University of North Texas, we bring an annual peer-reviewed international multimedia journal our distinct disciplinary perspectives to our analysis of visual culture. Learning of the presence of pregnant fashion dolls in the university’s Texas Fashion Collection, and having both recently lived the pregnant “Your Kids saY ‘MoM.’ Your Clothes saY otherwise”: body, we decided to work collaboratively to explore questions the dolls Pregnant Fashion dolls and Visual Culture raise about representations of the maternal and the feminine. My (Denise Amy Baxter) introduction to the Page Boy Mater- nity® dolls in the Texas Fashion Collection came in the Spring of 2005, Sara WilSon McKay & DeniSe Baxter near the end of my first year at the University of North Texas (UNT). My research addresses issues of fashion and self-fashioning in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century France. V Praze dne 28.5.2017, ………………………. Abstract This work was created to review the evidence for lexical borrowing from the Tocharian languages to the Chinese languages. The used methodology relies on lexical lists, previous etymological findings, linguistic typology and anthropological input. For preparatory data manipulation, a set of semi- automatic scripts has been created. Presented is a qualitative research based on previous findings assisted by raw data. The outcome of this work should be testable findings which could be extracted to a computer processable form.
