TEL: 717-540-1010 The 2012 CPFJ Youth Jazz Camp was attended by 50 students ranging in age from 8 to 21. That is the highest attendance in the history of the Camp. Cyrus Chestnut WEB: and Jonathan Ragonese provided inspiration and guidance as the Camp's guest www.friendsofjazz.org EMAIL: instructors along with faculty members, Jeff Stabley, Steve Meashey, Kirk Reese, [email protected] Paul Bratcher, and Mitchell Stowman. The students received individual and small group instruction during the camp and concluded with a student/faculty concert Steve & Andrea Rudolph on Friday evening, June 15. It was an amazing event with generous applause, Executive Directors cheering, and standing ovations. Thanks to the Olewine Family Fund for underwriting the camp, Penn National Insurance, The Hall Foundation, Phoenix CPFJ Board of Directors: Design, and several private donors for their scholarship funds, all of the talented students who attended the Camp, and to our outstanding guest instructors and William Anderson faculty members. Well done! (Membership) JazzFest 2012, held at the Ware Center in Lancaster on June 15-17 was a success Troy Ballard as well, with headliners flutist Ali Ryerson, jazz, and vocalist J. D. Walter wowing (Marketing) audience members. Amy Banks (President) Jam Sessions at The Green Room in Carlisle, The Hilton Harrisburg, and M.J.'s Gerald Bennet Coffeehouse in Annville have attracted numerous musicians from many different (1st Vice Pres. areas to come together, improvise, and make great music! It will include (Treasurer - Finance) our annual picnic, River Boat Cruise, JazzWalk and other notable events. The 2012 Festival highlights many of the great musicians from Central Pennsylvania and welcomes artists from New York, Philadelphia and more. A Riverboat Cruise, annual JazzWalk, Jazz Picnic, Sunday Jazz Brunch, and Jam Session highlight the four day event. The Friday night JazzWalk features live music in several downtown venues including Bricco, the Hilton Harrisburg's Patio, MoMo's BBQ, Pints Bar and more!. Jazz violinist John Blake Jr., an international jazz star formerly with Grover Washington & McCoy Tyner, will headline Saturday's annual Picnic as will the Zeropoint big Band from State College, PA. Sunday events include the Sunday Jazz Brunch at the Hilton Harrisburg, a special lecture by saxophonist/composer Jonathan Ragonese on Listening to America's Pulse, and the Festival will close with a star-studded Jam Session at the ABC Brewery. First on the Series is the highly acclaimed tenor saxophonistJerry Weldon . A native New Yorker, the tenorman is a veteran of the New York Jazz Scene, his résumé reading like a virtual "Who's Who of Jazz." After graduating from Rutgers in '81 he was hired as tenor soloist with Lionel Hampton and began touring the world. He then became a member of organistJack McDuff's band, recording for Concord records. In 1990, Jerry became a charter member and featured soloist withHarry Connick Jr.'s newly formed Big Band . Jerry has worked and recorded with organistsJimmy McGriff , Joey DeFrancesco , & Dr. Lonnie Smith , trombone great Al Grey , piano giants George Cables and Cedar Walton, drum legends Roy Haynes and Jimmy Cobb as well as guitarist/singer George Benson , guitarist Earl Klugh , and singer Mel Tormé. We are thrilled to have Jerry bringing his own Organ Trio to our Series. This5PM , September 16th concert will be held in the Ballroom of theSheraton Harrisburg Hershey , 4650 Lindle Road, Hbg. . October brings the return of one of the most beloved musicians to ever grace the CPFJ stages - bassistRufus Reid . Born in Atlanta and raised in Sacramento CA, Rufus Reid's major professional career began in Chicago and continues since 1976 in New York City. His extensive jazz background and discography reads literally like the Who's Who in jazz. He has traveled, performed and recorded with many of the great Jazz Masters. He was privileged to share many musical moments with some that have passed on: Gene Ammons, Kenny Dorham, Philly Joe Jones, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Dexter Gordon, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, & Dizzy Gillespie. Equally known as an exceptional educator, he began teaching clinics in 1971 with Jamey Aebersold's Summer Jazz Workshops. Rufus was on the faculty of William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey, as Full Professor and Director of the Jazz Studies and Performance program for twenty years completing his tenure in 1999. He has appeared for CPFJ withDexter Gordon , James Moody, Joe Henderson, Pepper Adams& his own Tana-Reid Quartet. Rufus is a long time member of CPFJ's Hall of Fame - please come out and welcome him back to central PA. This3PM, October 14th concert will be held the Allen Theater, 36 East Main Street, Annville PA with an open Jam Session in the adjoining M.J.'s Coffeehouse after the Concert. . Jazz vocalistJackie Ryan has been thrilling audiences across the globe with her powerful 3 ½ octave range and her amazing stage presence. She has a style that is uniquely her own. Born of a Mexican mother who sang in Operettas in Mexico and an Irish father who sang classical tenor in many languages, she was, as one critic put it, "simply born to sing." Jackie's multicultural heritage and her natural affinity for singing in several languages (she sings in English, Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese) has added to her increasing international acclaim. "Extraordinary is the word!" said jazz critic Don Heckman - L. A. Times. Her style includes an amazing range from gospel and blues to Brazilian Bossa Novas. From Latin to Bebop, from Vocalese to the most heartfelt ballads. She is "one of the outstanding jazz vocalists of her generation and, quite possibly, of all time. She is the thoroughbred vocal equivalent of the Triple Crown, rivaling the dexterous sass of Sarah Vaughan, the instinctive smarts of Carmen McRae and the scintillating verve of Diana Krall."
