60 / running head RahsaRahsaaRahsaan Roland Kirk Photo by Michael Wilderman monstrosioso 1965: The Creeper The fussy encyclopedic gravity of the Hammond B-3 overcome and the electric organ lofted to hard-bop orbit, still trailing diapasons of his mother’s church music and the boogie-woogie tap-dance routines of his father’s band—The Incredible Jimmy Smith proclaimed the block letters on a score of albums since the 1956 breakout recordings on Blue Note, those words celebrating a nearly miraculous mating of technology and soul. The thing had ﬁrst stirred to life at a club in Atlantic City where he heard Wild Bill Davis make the Hammond roar like a big wave. It was a monster, upsurged through chocked, choppy chords and backwashed through rilling legatos, wattage enough there to power the entire Basie band. Davis was gruff, brash, gloriously loud, a bumptious lumbering at- tack, great swoops down on the keys and shameless ripsaw goosings of reverb and tremolo, the organ not so much singing as signaling, the music stripped to pure swelling impulse. For a piano player schooled in the over- brimming muscular lines of Art Tatum and the stabbing, nervous prances of Bud Powell, it was almost risible, the goddamned wired-up thing rock- ing on stage like a gurgling showboat. Fats Waller on “Jitterbug Waltz” coaxed over the organ with a percolating ﬁnesse as if running a trapeze artist up a swaying wire, but Davis almost seemed clumsy by design, as if in awe of the organ’s powers yet unable to forego provoking them.

It unites Bob with two terrific musicians: Hammond B3 organist Dan Kostelnik and drummer Steve Johns frequently joined by tenor great Ralph Bowen. With long, blues-drenched melodic lines and a distinctive, horn-like sound, guitarist-composer Bob DeVos is hailed as “a master with a sound to die for: rich, full, deep, positive, round and warm.“ Bob cut his teeth in jazz as the replacement for Pat Martino in the Trudy Pitts & Mr. C. Trio, then went on to perform and record extensively with other Hammond B-3 Organ group legends: Charles Earland, Jimmy McGriff-Hank Crawford, Richard “Groove” Holmes-Sonny Stitt, Jack McDuff and modern organists Joey DeFrancesco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Mike LeDonne, as well as many, many jazz greats past and current outside the organ jazz genre. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Bonnie Franklin: [email protected] or Rosa Diaz-Mulryan: [email protected] April 1, 2005 JIMMY MCGRIFF, MASTER OF THE HAMMOND B-3 ORGAN, WILL PERFORM AT RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY (Mahwah) – Jazz at the Berrie Center presents “Master of the Organ Jam,” Jimmy McGriff and His All-stars on Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m. in the Sharp Theater on the campus of Ramapo College of New Jersey. Considered the all-time giant of the Hammond B-3, organ master Jimmy McGriff is know as one of the “bluesiest” to come out of Philadelphia, the capital of the jazz organ world. His recording of Ray Charles’ “I’ve Got A Woman” was a top five R&B hit and a jukebox staple of the ‘60s. His All-stars are drummer Don Williams, a long-time member of McGriff’s touring band, guitarist Geary Moore and tenor saxophonist Jerry Weldon, known for his work with the Harry Connick, Jr. Big Band. Jimmy McGriff studied at Juilliard in New York City and at Philadelphia’s Combe College of Music. His music is steeped in blues and gospel. Blues has been the backbone of most of the major jazz organists, but throughout his recording career, McGriff has stuck closer to the blues than most of them. After a stint in law enforcement, he turned his focus to the organ and studied at Combe and Juilliard, as well as privately with Jimmy Smith, “Groove” Holmes, Milt Buckner and classical organist Sonny Gatewood. In 1962, while performing in Trenton, New Jersey, a scout from a record label called Jell was struck with the organist’s arrangement of “I’ve Got a Woman” and offered him a contract.

About Hank Marr Hank Marr was born in 1927 in a section of Columbus then known as “Flytown.” He learned to play on a neighbor’s piano, mimicking the chords he heard on the radio. He later jammed with friend Ronnie Kirk (later known as Rahsaan Roland Kirk) in a nearby garage, then played with “Charlie Brantley and the Honey Dippers” in Tampa, Florida. Marr returned to Columbus for formal training at The Ohio State University and began performing with the Sammy Hopkins Trio and Rusty Bryant’s band, when his keyboard playing expanded to the Hammond organ for which he became famous.

Hammond Technique and Methods: Music Written for the Hammond Organ JESSE WHITELEY A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2013 © JESSE WHITELEY, 2013 Abstract The following thesis is made up of four original compositions written between February and September of 2012, with emphasis on the Hammond Organ in the context of jazz and rhythm and blues ensembles. The pieces of music were designed to feature the organ as the lead instrument in order to highlight various playing techniques that are specific to the Hammond Organ within these genres. In addition to my own music and an explanation and analysis of my work, the writing will provide a historical overview of organists I have chosen to highlight as influences to provide a framework for each piece of music. In order to aid this discussion of what has been an under-theorized instrument and performance tradition, I have sought out active contemporary organists to discuss their creative practices on the Hammond, as well as their insight into the notable organists of the past. Finally, of particular interest to me in this thesis is the emphasis on the Hammond Organ as an electric instrument, and the unique musical textures that are possible through the exploitation of the multiple controls that are integral to the instrument's construction.
