Furthermore, this project argues that feminist critics need to integrate the examination of the encodings of religion in literature into already existing modes of analysis such as those that take into consideration the significance of gender, race, class, and sexuality. The four authors considered in this study all make use of religious discourse as a political strategy for manipulating positions of female cultural authority and white racial privilege. Each author uses inflections of Christianity in order to claim or contest the privileges of whiteness, assumptions about female sexual purity, and competing visions of women’s role in the nation’s putative millennial destiny. In her 1859 The Minister’s Wooing , Harriet Beecher Stowe develops mutually reinforcing theological, romantic love, and antislavery plots in order to valorize America’s Puritan heritage while attempting to establish a providential place for the problem of slavery in the nation’s millennial destiny. Harriet E. Wilson’s 1859 Our Nig; or Sketches from the Life of a Free Black portrays a black woman with a tumultuous, but nonetheless profound, affiliation with Christianity. Wilson uses a religious framework to expose the national sin of racism and to hint at the latent redemption available to those oppressed by the racial prejudice of hypocritical, white Christians. In her 1872 Who Would Have Thought It? , María Amparo Ruiz de Burton inverts the structures of nineteenth-century nativist anti-Catholic rhetoric to make a case for her Mexican protagonist’s white racial 7 and aristocratic cultural purity. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s secular and scientific ideology of womanhood, which she articulated in eugenic narratives such as her 1911 The Crux , echoes the religiously-infused domestic ideologies of her great-aunt Catharine Beecher. Indeed, by foregrounding religious historical and cultural contexts, this dissertation offers comparative readings of these novels and authors and exposes the ways in which the manifestations of religion in American literature interlock with the social discourses of race and gender. 8 INTRODUCTION COMPLICATING FEMINIST CRITICAL APPROACHES TO RELIGION AND AMERICAN LITERATURE The appropriations of religion and the flexible political deployments of religion that are woven into nineteenth-century American literature are often overlooked by feminist literary critics. One possible reason for this oversight could be the feminist distrust of the notion that women can gain agency from or find a political voice through religious, particularly Christian, identities. To be sure, as feminist critics seeking to identify and respond to inequality, we are aware of the ways in which literature itself is used to propagate cultural authority and maintain social hierarchies. Since the ideologies of Christianity are knit into larger social systems, they have contributed to the asymmetrical dissemination of power in American society. This unequal distribution of power is a factor in the establishment and maintenance of hierarchies of gender and race. But as my dissertation demonstrates, some nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century women writers employ Christian discourse in order to affirm, contest, or even expand— sometimes concurrently—understandings of power, race, and gender. Indeed, it is precisely because religion is not static or always obvious in its use or implications that feminist literary critics need to develop strategies for analyzing the complexities of religion as they appear in American literature. I wrote this dissertation because I believe that the manifestations of religion in American literature create a multifaceted literary subtext with rich dimensions for feminist criticism. In fact, after the death of Jacques Derrida, Stanley Fish put forward the argument that religion would join race, gender, and class as the next category of 9 analysis in the fields of the humanities and the social sciences. 1 As I analyze the marks of Christianity imbricated in American women’s writing, I do not necessarily utilize religion as its own category of analysis. Rather, I look at the ways in which religious ideologies cut across, intersect with, and are entrenched in other organizing facets of identity and difference. I contend that we need to integrate the examination of the encodings of religion in literature into already existing modes of analysis such as those that take into consideration the significance of gender, race, class, and sexuality. Neither of the two key elements of the domestic novel, marriage and home, is given to the heroine of Our Nig. The “true womanhood” with its emphasis on piety, purity, obedience, and domesticity1 is either unavailable to, or unable to support, a black woman in a patriarchal racist society based on slavery rules. The problem, then, focuses on the way how the heroine establishes herself in such a hostile society. One of the cheif themes of the story, in fact, lies in Frado’s struggle to acquire independence. According to Harryette Mullen, nineteenth- century black women writers strived to incorporate “an oral tradition of resistance” into their literature, since the two traditional literary forms available to them, the male slave narrative and the white female sentimental fiction, are inadequate to express their experience (245). They assert oral power of black women to resist the oppressors and to insist upon their selfhood, while male writers of slave narratives underscore the physical power to attain manhood as Douglass does in the scene of his fight with Mr. Covey. When submission and self-effacement were endorsed as female virtues, black women resorted to “orality”—talking back, arguing, or revealing secrets of their masters, all of which were regarded as “saucy” or “impudent” by the ruling class—to surface their voice and thereby to establish their identity (Mullen 245-46)2. Weyler. 249 pp. This dissertation examines nineteenth-century depictions of African American children in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), Frank J. Webb’s The Garies and Their Friends (1857), and Harriet E. Wilson’s Our Nig (1859). It explores Stowe’s characters as wild, willful, and unruly minstrel-inspired comic figures further exaggerated with nineteenth-century stereotypes such as: shiftlessness, ignorance heathenism, and demonism. Both novels of Webb and Wilson serve as respondents to Stowe’s creations. Frank J. Webb presents industrious, educated children whose pranks are born out of self-possession. Wilson, on the other hand, illustrates that for the African American child in servitude in the free North, hardship and violence can rival that of the slave-holding South. In doing so, I explore the relationship between laws, race, and literature to investigate complex questions such as: what moral lessons about the institution of marriage are conveyed in early African-American novels? How did early American laws and policies affect these moral lessons? Lastly, how have marriage, laws, and traditions affected the representation of African-American characters in novels and shaped identities within African-American communities? Through the lens of critical race theory, feminist theory, and scholarship within legal studies, I analyze William Wells Brown’s Clotel published in 1853, and Harriet E. Wilson’s Our Nig: or, Sketches from the Life of a Free Black published in 1859. My analysis demonstrates both Brown and Wilson’s ability to recast the conventions of sentimental novels such as the traditional marriage plot despite the legal and social constraints their protagonists face. Brown’s Clotel teaches its audience that the institution of American slavery and the institution of American marriage are incompatible because of the legal relation between enslavers and enslaved people.

    4 Our Nig: fetters of an American farmgirl R.J. Ellis From her who ever was and still’s a slave (Mary Collier, 1739)1 Following its rediscovery by Henry Louis Gates Jr in 1982, Harriet Wilson’s Our Nig (1859) was quickly identified as a double first – the first African-American novel published by a woman and the first African- American novel published in the USA. It was also rapidly located within its ante-bellum abolitionist literary contexts. Plainly Our Nig draws upon Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852) and slave narrative writing of this period.2 My purpose is not to gainsay these perspectives, but to identify, complementarily, how Our Nig, the work of a Northern free black, also provides a working-class portrait of New England farm life, removed from the frontier that dominates accounts of American agrarian life.3 The novel articulates a young female farm servant’s class position and lack of agency.4 Consequently its engagement with the pas- toral is highly original – an originality promoted by Wilson’s African- American identity: the pastoral tradition to hand was a white Western one, from which she was largely alienated.5 She was therefore compelled to bring to her experiences the resources of the only literary tradition coherently available, the slave narrative. As a consequence, that tradition’s stress on labour emerges in her writing in the very face of Western pasto- ral conventions.6 This transposition to a rural setting in the ‘free’ North of frankness about toil and its consequences means that Our Nig stands as not simply some type of slave narrative variant, but also what I will call an ‘apastoral’.

A FAMILY DISPUTE: THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN COMMUNITY’S RESPONSE TO UNCLE TOM A Thesis Presented To The Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts History by Spencer York August 2016 Accepted by: Dr. Paul Anderson, Committee Chair Dr. Abel Bartley Dr. Orville Vernon Burton Abstract This thesis is an attempt to understand the complex relationship between the African-American community and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. It argues that a large reason for the negative connotation of “uncle Tom” within the African-American community was caused by conflicts between intellectual patterns and traditions of the community and Stowe’s vision in her novel. This thesis looks at the key texts in the intellectual history of the African-American community, including the literary responses by African Americans to the novel. This thesis seeks to fill gaps in the history of the African-American community by looking at how members of the community exercised their agency to achieve the betterment of the community, even in the face of white opposition.
