Its foundations were laid around 1530 and work ended in the 17th century. Its unfinished state, it has a missing tower, has led to it being popularly known as La Manquita, (one- armed). Legend has it that the money allocated for its completion in the 19th century was sent to pay for the wars in America, although there is evidence that the money actually went to fund emergency public works in the province. After the morning excursion; you have time to enjoy a long lazy Spanish lunch at one of the many eateries along the coast. Day 3: Granada and the Alhambra Palace & Generalife Following breakfast in the hotel, you will be picked up by coach and taken to the world- famous Alhambra of Granada. On everyone’s travel list, the majestic Alhambra and its Generalife Gardens are the perfect example of the Moorish influence in Andalusia. The Alhambra was so called because of its reddish walls (in Arabic, “qa'lat al-Hamra'” means Red Castle). It is located on top of the hill, al-Sabika, on the left bank of the river Darro, to the west of the city of Granada and in front of the neighbourhoods of the Albaicin and of the Alcazaba. The Alhambra is located on a strategic point, with a view over the whole city and it is believed that other buildings were already on that site before the Muslims arrived. The Generalife occupy the Cerro del Sol (‘slopes of the hill of the sun’), from where there is a complete view over the city and the valleys of the rivers Genil and Darro. There are different interpretations of the meaning of its name: the Governor's Garden or the Architect's Garden or Alarife, in Arabic. The Generalife became a leisure place for the kings of Granada when they wanted to get away from the official affairs of the palace. After an English guided tour of these two renowned landmarks, you will have some free time to enjoy the sites at your own pace before returning to your hotel in Granada. From there, you will have the rest of the day to do as you want. Dinner will be at leisure but options for dining in Granada are endless, with something for every taste and budget. We recommend seeking out one of the cosy tapas bars for a real taste of Spain! 01534 496687 | bontour.co.uk Day 4: Granada, Cordoba & Seville This morning it is time to say goodbye to Granada as you make your way to one of the most popular destinations of Andalusia, Cordoba. It was an important Roman city and a major Islamic centre in the Middle Ages. It’s best known for La Mezquita, an immense mosque dating from 784 A.D. A visit of the mesmerising Mezquita and its familiar columned prayer hall is, of course, on the cards for today. One of the world's greatest Islamic buildings, the Mezquita is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago when Cordoba was the capital of Islamic Spain and Western Europe's biggest, most cultured city. When you enter Cordoba’s most important monument, you will witness why it is considered a symbol of the many religious changes the city has undergone over the centuries. Originally a Catholic church, it was converted into an Islamic mosque in the Middle Ages, then back into a church after the Reconquista. With its otherworldly architecture, the Mezquita is considered one of the most accomplished Moorish monuments in the world. After your English guided tour, you will have some time to explore the city at your own pace. The capital of the Cordoba province, with whitewashed courtyards, colourful cobblestone alleys, historic monuments and a fascinating melting pot of Muslim, Christian and Jewish culture, is bound to enchant. Wander around its compact winding lanes lined with flowering balconies, old bodegas, boisterous bars and artisan craft shops. Later that day, you will drive to Seville, the capital of southern Spain. You will check-in at the 4* Melia Lebreros Hotel, ideally located in Seville‘s commercial district and within walking distance to the historic centre. Tonight, the city will welcome you in proper Andalusian style with a Flamenco show and dinner. Seville is the birthplace of this passionate and seductive art form expressed for centuries in southern Spain with music and dance. Day 5: Seductive Seville After breakfast, discover the heart of Andalusia with a visit of seductive Seville. The capital and largest city of Andalusia, looking down on the Guadalquivir river, will charm and win you over. Its historic centre, lorded over by a colossal Gothic cathedral, is an intoxicating mix of resplendent Mudéjar palaces, baroque churches and winding medieval lanes. Flamenco clubs keep the intimacy and intensity of this centuries-old tradition alive whilst aristocratic mansions recall the city’s Moorish past including the 16th-century metropolis rich off the back of New World trade. One of Seville‘s major landmarks is its cathedral. Included in your guided tour, Seville’s immense cathedral is awe-inspiring in its scale and majesty. The world’s largest Gothic cathedral, it was built between 1434 and 1517 over the remains of what had previously been the city’s main mosque. Highlights include the Giralda, the mighty bell tower which incorporates the mosque’s original minaret, the monumental tomb of Christopher Columbus, and the Capilla Mayor with an astonishing gold altarpiece. 01534 496687 | bontour.co.uk Your English-speaking guide will also take you around to secret cobbled lanes and hidden plazas where locals meet for a refreshing glass of Andalusian wine, before hiding away in the shade or inside their traditional Mediterranean houses for the Siesta. Enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace, we recommend a leisurely evening spent in one of the many tapas bars surrounding the captivating Plaza de España, a beautiful example of the Mudejar architectural style, and one of the must-see landmarks of the city. Day 6: Seville at leisure After breakfast, enjoy a full day at leisure in the capital of Andalusia. Make the most of everything Seville has to offer including its many museums and places of interest or alternatively, you could enjoy a day relaxing at the hotel and perhaps have a glass of Andalusia’s fino sherry by the pool, one of the best ways to enjoy Autumn in Andalusia. For the shopping aficionados, there is always the option to top up your wardrobe with the latest Spanish fashion at the two shopping centres situated opposite your hotel! Day 7: Ronda & Malaga Enjoying breakfast at the hotel, you will then leave Seville and drive across Andalusia to reach the last stop on this trip, Malaga. First, there will be a pause in Ronda, in the heart of the Malaga province. Ronda is a mountain-top city that is set dramatically above a deep gorge. This gorge, El Tajo in Spanish, separates the city’s 15th-century ‘new’ town from its old town, dating to Moorish rule. It has a dramatic history filled with outlaws, bandits, guerrilla warriors and rebels. Its spectacular location on top of El Tajo gorge and its status as the largest of Andalucía’s white towns have made it hugely popular with tourists.
