Feb 09, Stuart Aken rated it it was Wake Up and Live!. When I saw the original was by Dorothea Brande, I looked for that original. After all, why have a copy? We do this even as we kid ourselves that everything we do is designed to make us succeed. However, having read the text, I can see the validity and purpose behind them and will be performing these exercises over the next weeks. As a bald statement, this lacks the power it generates within Wake Up and Live! text. There is much, much more, of course. This original version is also cheaper than the copy I was offered, by the way. Apr 21, Jodi Ralston rated it really liked it Shelves: non-fictioninspirational- motivationalpsychology-nonfictionreading-challenge. The main fault I found was that Brande buried her core philosophy in the middle of the book although, if you read the front or back cover you get what it is right away. I suppose she did this because she Wake Up and Live! the readers needed a lot of convincing before they would accept her idea. The other fault is minor. The layout does not allow for you to easily pick out bits to remember or to act upon. If you don't mind writing in a book, I definitely suggest following Wake Up and Live! advice to highlight the things i The main fault I found was that Brande buried her core philosophy in the middle of the book although, if you read the front or back cover you get what it is right away. If you don't mind writing in a book, I definitely suggest following its advice to highlight the things interesting to you. I wish I had, but I hate defiling books, even ones I intend to keep. I guess there are always sticky notes for my second read. The book is full of useful tidbits--some are insights into human nature and some are actions to try. And I admit I didn't think it could be that easy-- act as if it were impossible Wake Up and Live! fail --but then one day while reading it, something clicked. You don't believe that you can't fail you know it's possible ; rather, you act like you can't. There's a big difference. Mostly, it's about not letting fears, doubts, past failures, and other negatives eat up, consciously or unconsciously, your energy, your drive, and your time. If you rid yourself of those, you are left realizing all the energy and time you spent on those, unconsciously or consciously, can now be spent on working toward success--and you realize how much more likely you are to succeed now. So it is a great philosophy, and the book was an interesting read with some actions I want to try. But best of all, this book inspires to me to do better with my life, and that is the best endorsement of all. May 27, James rated it it was amazing. That said this remains one of my favourite non- fiction books -- second only to her 'Becoming A Writer. That is the talisman, the formula, the command of right-about-face which turns us from failure towards success. What that best may be, what its farthest reaches may include, we can Wake Up and Live! only by freeing ourselves completely from the Will to Wake Up and Live!. View 1 comment. I expected a lot from this book because I love Dorothea Brande book about writing The book isn't about good life as the title eludesit is a self help book about how Wake Up and Live! succeed and get over your will to fail or how to stop self - destruct. The book is good enough but not great. So my first reaction was: Why is this book bullying me? But as I continued to read I realized that some of it really resonated with me. It is a different book. I don't know how to explain it, but I do know that I need to reread it again. Jul Wake Up and Live!, Ilyez Blk rated it liked it. Oct 05, A. I think it was Tim Clare who was raving about this author. You can find her works read aloud on YouTube or in the public domain as this was written in I thinkbut I ended up getting a copy from Amazon. And damn, does this feel current. I g I think it was Tim Clare who was raving about this author. For I had been years in my deadlock; I had known what I wanted to do, had equipped myself for my profession—and got nowhere. Yet I had chosen my life work, which was writing, early, and had started Wake Up and Live! with high hopes. Most of the Wake Up and Live! I had finished had met a friendly reception. But then when I tried to take the next step and go onto a more mature phase it was as though I had been turned Wake Up and Live! stone. I felt as if I could not start. Asked to do a lecture, she spoke on her new method for getting things done, and was surprised by the response of listeners. This one really hit me: You will never have to see the object you slaved to bring into being despised or misunderstood. You will never have to Wake Up and Live! the rancor of those whom you necessarily surpassed in competition; you will never have to stand the cut of adverse criticism. You will never have to become aware of the malice of those who envy any success, however trivial. You will never have to back your opinions by argument when you are tired and would rather rest for new effort. Wake Up and Live!, far deeper and more vital pain, you will never see the discrepancy between the finished work you can do and the work as you had hoped to do it. When we should be acting we indulge or excuse ourselves for inactivity we then upbraid and punish ourselves ruthlessly and futilely. The scolding is futile because we somehow feel that, if we have been severe and cutting to ourselves, we have in some way atoned for the fault of non performance. We Wake Up and Live! not, of course. We have not done what we planned, and we have discouraged and hurt ourselves into the bargain. Definitely worth a look. Feb 27, Adrian Starks rated it it was amazing. Powerful read. I will actually need to go back and study the notes taken as I read. Key phrase is "act is if it were impossible to fail". What a statement to make you arise from your self defeating habits and get yourself into the motion of success. There is a difference between day dreaming and deciding that there is a mental strategic process needed to erode away the behavior of falling under the radar of comfort of doing what appears to be safe or natural for us. Like exercise we must stretch Powerful Wake Up and Live!. • Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release June 1990 Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965 July 1 - September 11, 1990 This summer, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to Twentieth Century Fox with a retrospective of over ninety films made between 1935 and 1965. Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. From this time on, the studio masterfully anticipated and shaped the tastes of the movie-going public. During World War II, Twentieth Century Fox made its mark with a series of exuberant Technicolor musicals featuring such actresses as Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. After the war, the studio shifted focus and began to highlight other genres including films noirs such as Edmund Goulding's Nightmare Alley (1947) and Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), wry satirical films such as Joseph L.
