But Miss Ethel Barrymore's invitation goes instead to Miss Ethel "Dynamite" Jackson, a very blonde, very brassy chorus girl. And she's going to give Paris an Eiffel! Doris Day and Ray Bolger star in this musical bonbon highlighted by the Vernon Duke/E.Y. Harburg title tune and a high-kicking, bell-ringing rendition of the Jule Styne/Sammy Cahn "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight." Day is pure TNT as Dynamite, and Bolger's rubbery comic artistry ideally complements her. Lorelai (Lauren Graham) still runs the Dragonfly Inn, and now lives with Luke (Scott Patterson). Her daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel), now 32, juggles career complications and ex-boyfriends, while matriarch Emily (Kelly Bishop) adjusts to widowed life. In four memorable chapters studded with drop-ins by quirky Stars Hollow friends, the Gilmores confront long-standing unresolved issues, going head-to- head with passionate heart-to-hearts. Concerned about Tom's cough, Curly sends Tom to see Dr. Fawcett (Rosco Ates), where Tom captures the eye of the Doc's daughter, Mary (Betty Furness). Doc Fawcett quickly tumbles to Tom's jailbird background and forbids Betty from associating with the probable owlhoot. Unbeknownst to all, Tom is secretly undercover as a cattle rustler, looking to tie Curly to his father's murder. Before Tom can get the dirt on Curly and crew, Tom surprises townfolk and desperado alike when he unexpectedly adopts a child (Roland Southern). As Curly warms to the child, Tom discovers the true culprit, only for his old cell-mate, Blackie (Jim Mason), to come calling...What's a six-shooter single dad to do? It takes an Air Force corporal from Youngstown, Ohio! A charming tale of a noncom with a crush on a filmland ingenue is the backdrop for this spirited flag-waver featuring screen greats performing for - or just shooting the breeze with - starstruck flyboys in uniform. Songs by the Gershwins, Cole Porter and more legendary composers plus a hilarious Western production number with Cooper whoopin' it up as a steely Texas Ranger add to the red-white- and-blue fun. Unlike his fellow Texan ranch riders, Malone dreams of the East, and the greatest horse show of all: polo. When a brother-sister pair of dilettante debutantes (Anthony Allan and Florence Rice) purchase Lone Star with an eye toward the polo pitch, Malone transforms himself into Wild Bill Malone, the greatest polo player in Texas, with the aid of a press-agent pal (Jack Carson). Soon making his official polo debut, Malone's fast mouth and faster fists make a mess of things, and he leaves the field in disgrace. Heading east to Queens, NY and a Wild West show with ranch buddy Snifty (Buddy Ebsen), Wild Bill gets a shot at redemption and romance when he brings polo to the rodeo. 11/28/2017 888574564827 The Old Maid 1939 ""She's just a sour old maid who hates me because I'm young and attractive and in love!" Headstrong, beautiful Tina has nothing but disdain for her Aunt Charlotte. What could she know of a young girl's heart? A great deal, in fact. For unloved, unlovable Aunt Charlotte is really Tina's mother, whose romance with a Civil War soldier who didn't return resulted in Tina's birth...and a lifetime of maternal sacrifice. As Charlotte, Bette Davis gives one of her most nuanced performances, aging from wide-eyed girl to gray-haired martinet. Miriam Hopkins provides effective counterbalance with her portrayal of Charlotte's effusive cousin, who raises Tina. Two women, one child - and a brilliant example of melodrama as art." Thoroughly unglamorous here - eyes and hairline shaved, face painted chalky white - double Academy Award® winner* Davis exudes such intelligence, energy and ardor that her romance with the decades-younger Essex (Flynn at the peak of his remarkable good looks and athletic verve) is completely believable. Based on Maxwell Anderson's play Elizabeth the Queen and directed by Michael Curtiz, this nominee for five Oscars® takes liberties with historical accuracy, but none with dramatic impact. Long may these tempestuous, titled lovers reign! • Investigating Vocabulary in Academic Spoken English
INVESTIGATING VOCABULARY IN ACADEMIC SPOKEN ENGLISH: CORPORA, TEACHERS, AND LEARNERS BY THI NGOC YEN DANG A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Linguistics Victoria University of Wellington 2017 Abstract Understanding academic spoken English is challenging for second language (L2) learners at English-medium universities. A lack of vocabulary is a major reason for this difficulty. To help these learners overcome this challenge, it is important to examine the nature of vocabulary in academic spoken English. This thesis presents three linked studies which were conducted to address this need. Study 1 examined the lexical coverage in nine spoken and nine written corpora of four well-known general high-frequency word lists: West’s (1953) General Service List (GSL), Nation’s (2006) BNC2000, Nation’s (2012) BNC/COCA2000, and Brezina and Gablasova’s (2015) New-GSL. Study 2 further compared the BNC/COCA2000 and the New-GSL, which had the highest coverage in Study 1. It involved 25 English first language (L1) teachers, 26 Vietnamese L1 teachers, 27 various L1 teachers, and 275 Vietnamese English as a Foreign Language learners. The teachers completed 10 surveys in which they rated the usefulness of 973 non-overlapping items between the BNC/COCA2000 and the New- GSL for their learners in a five-point Likert scale. The learners took the Vocabulary Levels Test (Nation, 1983, 1990; Schmitt, Schmitt, & Clapham, 2001), and 15 Yes/No tests which measured their knowledge of the 973 words. Study 3 involved compiling two academic spoken corpora, one academic written corpus, and one non-academic spoken corpus.

  • Live on the Sunset Strip
robert landau Excerpt: Live on the Sunset Strip The street that made music history Robert Landau’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip was published in October 2012 by Angel City Press. Downloaded from http://online.ucpress.edu/boom/article-pdf/2/4/79/381413/boom_2012_2_4_79.pdf by guest on 28 September 2021 The Sunset Strip is that 1.7-mile stretch of Sunset Boulevard that is now part of the city of West Hollywood, connecting Hollywood on the east (where funky Laurel Canyon descends to Sunset and meets Crescent Heights) with Beverly Hills to the west (where Doheny Road climbs to the posh mansions of 90210-land). There are actually many Sunset Strips—versions that live in real time and space, and versions that live in our collective fantasy. The actual landscape of the Strip is typical of Los Angeles, featuring buildings of every imaginable architectural style, a look captured perfectly by artist Ed Ruscha in his 1966 book Every Building on the Sunset Strip. Outdoor advertising permeates the vista, ready to capture the attention of the steady stream of eyeballs that comes with continuously heavy traffic. Billboards of varying sizes are sandwiched between and above colorful hotels, restaurants, offices, gas stations, sleazy strip malls, and trendy retail shops. Now, thanks to digital technology, billboards engulf entire buildings and cover whole city buses, adding even more visual congestion to an already over- saturated urban scene. By day, the Sunset Strip was where the business of the music industry was conducted in the Sixties and Seventies. Both high-rise luxury offices and older, cottage-style buildings have long housed record companies, producers, talent scouts, business managers, personal managers, public relations executives, advertising agencies, design firms, and even a few film, photo, and recording studios.

Malgré ce qu’il raconte alors au public sur sa carrière et son sens de la dignité, Don a fait beaucoup de compromissions avant de devenir une star.
