Department of Geriatric Medicine Clinical Services: Out Patient Services: Department offers daily OPD services with comprehensive geriatric assessment of all the elderly. We do Memory assessments, Mental health and Depression assessment, Fall risk assessment and Incontinence evaluation. We also review Poly-pharmacy and optimise medication management. Special clinics have been initiated for running for these evaluations. Vaccination clinic has been started for immunising elderly with flu, pneumococcal, herpes zoster & tetanus vaccinations. Palliative care services have started since 2019. Patients are jointly assessed by a multidisciplinary team comprising of a Geriatrician, Social worker, Psychiatrist and a Physiotherapist. In Patient Services: Department has 30 beds for inpatient care which include critical care beds, acute care beds, and long term care beds in addition to general beds for care. Dedicated Geriatric physiotherapy services were also added. Community Services: Community services were started by both Nursing College and Medical Colleges in association with Community medicine department. Department has networked with all organisations caring for the elderly. Department has MOU with Susheg Trust for Neuro-palliative care, which doctors from the team visit regularly. We also do memory testing for all the senior citizens during the month of September in association with PAGE (Peoples Association for Geriatric Empowerment). Home care services: Have been started within a limit of 30kms, which is functional from 22-03-2020. Home lab sample collection, home delivery of drugs, home nursing care, physiotherapy and doctor visits have also been started. Renting of oxygen, nebuliser, Fowlers cot, suction apparatuses and air bed also started on 01- 04-2020. Telemedicine consultation: We have started a telecosultation facility where the elder‟s needs are addressed by the faculty. Health Check-Up Camps: In addition to routine health check up camps, department conducts memory assessment camps and has made Active ageing groups by training volunteers in the camp areas. Current Academic Year Infrastructure facility: In addition to the beds that have been allotted in IPD, dedicated OPD area with 3 rooms, Seminars hall, Faculty rooms have been added to make it a MCI recognised department. CURRICULUM INNOVATIONS : Geriatric and Palliative care topics have been added to both UG & M.D medicine. MBBS Undergraduate teaching: The 22 topics listed under the latest MCI document 2018 (22 core competencies) pertaining to geriatrics are being taught by the faculty of Geriatric Medicine. The faculty are making effective use of Yenepoya (Deemed to be) University‟s teaching web portal „Yengage‟. During the COVID period – since March, 2020 active participation in online teaching is going on. ACTS-YEN simulation method is used for training in Geriatric Palliative care emergencies. Teaching of MD General Medicine Post graduates: Subject seminars, journal clubs of interest in geriatrics are moderated by faculty of the department. General medicine post graduates are having rotational posting in department of geriatrics. Geriatric medicine faculty take active part in teaching of General medicine post graduates including bedside clinical teaching sessions. 4. COLLABORATIONS: Department collaborates with MediAcion Germany for Palliative care and Psychodrama courses. Certificate Course in Palliative Care (emphasis on geriatric care) modules: The department has trained a number of graduate/post graduate medical doctors and also given an exposure to final year medical students on the subject. 150 Government doctors working in Dakshina Kannada and around 150 were Nurses & other Paramedical personnel were trained by us in Geriatrics and Palliative care by 2 day workshop in the year 2019. Mr. Jochen Becker-Ebel, CEO, MediAcion, Germany has anchored many of our programs over the years – offline and recently, online as well. Psychodrama course: The department collaborates with MediAcion, Germany for conducting this course. Music Therapy course: In collaboration with Mrs. Cordula Dietrich, Psychiatrist & Music Therapist, Germany, department has successfully trained many doctors and allied health workers in music therapy. These programs will continue on a periodic basis. Group for Education and Research in Geriatrics (GERG): The GERG is an association of interested geriatricians and internal medicine faculty from all over India and few from abroad, who have joined hands to promote geriatric education and research in the country. They contribute their knowledge and skills without remuneration. Their participation is on a voluntary basis upon invitation by the founding members who are aware of their excellent contribution to teaching, clinical care and research. Dr. Prabha Adhikari is one of the 2 founding members of this group (the other being Prof. Alka Ganesh, former HOD Dept of Medicine CMC, Vellore). 22 competencies in outlined in “Volume II of the Competency Based Undergraduate Curriculum for the Indian Medical Graduate 2018” pertaining to geriatrics will be taught by online modules over a 8 week course „Geriatric in Nutshell for Medical Students‟. This will be a free course by 28 eminent faculties, culminating in a certification at the end of 8 weeks. The course is scheduled to start on 01-08-2020. Observation of International Calendar events for Elderly: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (15th June), World Alzeimer‟s Day (21st September), World Elder‟s Day (1st October). 5. Prameela Rao is the PI and Dr. Prabha Adhikari is the scientific advisor and co investigator- BIRAC/KIIT0895/BIG-15/19- Grant awarded. Amount yet to be released – 47.6 lakhs. 2.
