Report on Panchayath Level Statistics 2011 Panchayat Level Statistics 2011, Kasaragod Preface A transparent and accountable system of Governance can be met to a large extent with the availability of reliable statistics. Department of Economics & Statistics has taken various steps and make continuous efforts to improve statistical system in the State to meet the increasing needs of diverse users. Panchayat Level Statistics is one of the initiatives in this line. In this publication, the available data at Grama Panchayat level compiled at district and published in every five year interval to enable data for micro level planning. We have already released three publications in this series in 1996, 2001 and 2006 respectively. This Publication ‘Panchayat Level Statistics-2011’ Kasargod District is the fourth publication in this series. Kasargode District came in to existence on 24th Mayr, 1984 vide GO (MS) No.520/84/RD dated 19.05.1984. The District comprises of a single revenue division Kasaragode consisting of 2 Taluks and 127. Out of 127 villages, 82 villages are in Kasargode Taluk and 45 villages in Hosdurg Taluk. ii. The District is bound in the north by Mangaloor district of Karnataka state, on the west by Arabian Sea, on the south by Kannur District and on the east by Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka state. The District lies between the north latitudes 120 12’ and 120 48’ and the east longitudes 74052’and 750’20”. iii. Kasaragode district consists of 3 Sub-micro Region namely Cannanore Coast, Kasaragode Table Land and Peringom-Mattanur Undulating Upland. Cannanore Coast lies as a narrow coastal strip on the western side of the District with a maximum height of 87 m. Kasaragode Table Land region comprises of the whole Kasaragode Taluk exept its western coastal area and north eastern part of Hosdurg Taluk. The average height of this region is between 250m and 300m. Peringom- Mattannur Undulating Upland region has undulating terrain with number of isolated hills. iv. Chandragiri River is the longest river in the District flowing 105 km originate in Pattimala in Coorg Karnataka state. There are 11 other west flowing rivers together enrich the water availability in the District. v. As per 2011 census population in the District is about 3.9 percentage of the total population of the State. Out of 13.07 lakhs population, 7.98 lakhs persons from rural area and urban population is 5.09 lakhs. Child population in the age group 0-6 years is about 11.92 percentage to total population. Similarly scheduled caste and scheduled tribe population in the District are comes around 4.07 and 3.74 percentage respectively. Female population in the District is outnumbered, ie, 51.92 percentage of population in the District is females. But female population in the age group of 0-6 years is only 49 percentage of total population in the same age group. vi. During the last decade literacy rate in the District has increased from 84.57 to 89.85. Out of 269883 illiterates in the District 170296 is from rural area and 99587 persons from urban area. Number of illiterates in the District is about 5.12 percentage of total illiterates in the State.

Citing this reason many PMEGP applications are getting returned. A common direction is necessary for minimizing beneficiary grievances in this front. In the 115th Meeting of SLBC, Kerala held on 16.03.2015 at Trivandrum, Sri. James Varghese, IAS, Principal Secretary, Local Self Government Department informed the following 3 stage process for issue of license for running an industry. (i) Building permit (ii) License to install (iii) Running permit/licence 1 He informed that building permit is given once building is ready. License to install is immediately given on production of various NOCs of various statutory agencies and once it is installed running permit is given. Running license can be given only after installing the equipments concerned and this can be given only in the final stage.

CRD works in close association with Developmental Agencies under various programmes and schemes. The core activity of the organization consists of Planning, Executing and Monitoring of Integrated Watershed Management Programmes. In the reporting period, The Local Self Government Department of Government of Kerala have accredited CRD as one of the Service Providers to implement Sanitation programmes through the Gramapanchayats. In the reporting period, we have completed the participatory study project supported by NABARD to explore the farm practices of 101 select farmers and to publish the details in a book form. This book, lead farmers series-I was released by the CGM, NABARD. In the year 2009, we have been appointed by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) as the Resource Support Organization (RSO) for its Watershed Projects in Kasaragod District under Prime Minister’s Distressed District Package Programme for three years. On successful completion of the implementation of RSO project, NBARD has extended the project for two more years. It is a great achievement for us that CRD to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the three cluster watershed projects with a total area coverage of 16738 Ha under Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) of the Government in Parappa and Kanhangad Block Panchayats of Kasaragod DT.

The Temple is situated just 50 meters away from the Kottikulam Railway Station and 3 km away from the Bekal Fort, the international tourist centre. Bhagavathy or mother goddess is the main deity. Bhagavathi is worshipped in two forms as Mootha Bhagavathi (Durga) and Elaya Bhagavathi (Saraswathi). Besides these two Goddesses, Vishnumoorthi, Ghantakarnan and Dhandan Devan are the other deities. The festivals of the Temple are being celebrated by the active participation of the entire society. There is no bar on people from any caste or race from visiting the Temple.     1. INTRODUCTION 1.1. History Kasaragod, the northernmost district of Kerala, is endowed with rich natural resources and is noted for its majestic forts, ravishing rivers, hills, green valleys and beautiful beaches. The rich and varied cultural heritage of the district is portrayed through spectacular presentations of Theyyam, Yakshagana, Poorakkali, Kolkali and Mappilappattu. Seven languages are prevalent in Kasaragod. Malayalam is the administrative language. Other languages are Kannada, Tulu, Konkani, Marati, Urdu and Beary.Prior to State reorganization, Kasaragod was part of the South Kanara district.Kasaragod became a part of Malabar district following the reorganization of States and formation of unified Kerala State. Later, Kasaragod Taluk of Malabar district was bifurcated in to Kasaragod and Hosdurg Taluks and integrated with the then newly formed Cannanore district. Kasaragod became part of Kerala following the re-organization of states and formation of Kerala in 1st November 1956.The district was Kasaragod Taluk in Kannur District.The formation of Kasaragod district was a long felt ambition of the people.It is with the intention of bestowing maximum attention on the development of backward area, Kasaragod district was formed on 24th May,1984 as per GO (MS)No.520/84/RD, Dated 19.05.1984 by taking Kasaragod and Hosdurg taluks from the then Kannur district.The name Kasaragod is said to be derived from the word Kasaragod which means Nuxvemied Forest(Kanjirakuttam). 1.2. Physiography Kasaragod is bounded on the north and the east by Dakshina Kannada and Coorg districts of Karnataka State, on the south by Kannur district and on the west by the Lakshadweep Sea.
