Annual Report 2011-2012
CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (CRD) ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 Nileshwaram PO Kasaragod DT- 671314 Kerala State Ph: 04672283177 Cell: 09446403177 Email: [email protected] Website: www.crdksgd.org 1 Foreword Centre for Research and Development (CRD) is a Non Profit Organization registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and has been active in the field of development with various activities since 2002. CRD works in close association with Developmental Agencies under various programmes and schemes. The core activity of the organization consists of Planning, Executing and Monitoring of Integrated Watershed Management Programmes. In the reporting period, The Local Self Government Department of Government of Kerala have accredited CRD as one of the Service Providers to implement Sanitation programmes through the Gramapanchayats. In the reporting period, we have completed the participatory study project supported by NABARD to explore the farm practices of 101 select farmers and to publish the details in a book form. This book, lead farmers series-I was released by the CGM, NABARD. In the year 2009, we have been appointed by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) as the Resource Support Organization (RSO) for its Watershed Projects in Kasaragod District under Prime Minister’s Distressed District Package Programme for three years. On successful completion of the implementation of RSO project, NBARD has extended the project for two more years. It is a great achievement for us that CRD to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the three cluster watershed projects with a total area coverage of 16738 Ha under Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) of the Government in Parappa and Kanhangad Block Panchayats of Kasaragod DT. -
Problems of Salination of Land in Coastal Areas of India and Suitable Protection Measures

K. Puram, New Delhi-110066 FOREWORD Salinity is a significant challenge and poses risks to sustainable development of Coastal regions of India. If left unmanaged, salinity has serious implications for water quality, biodiversity, agricultural productivity, supply of water for critical human needs and industry and the longevity of infrastructure. The Coastal Salinity has become a persistent problem due to ingress of the sea water inland. This is the most significant environmental and economical challenge and needs immediate attention. The coastal areas are more susceptible as these are pockets of development in the country. Most of the trade happens in the coastal areas which lead to extensive migration in the coastal areas. This led to the depletion of the coastal fresh water resources. Digging more and more deeper wells has led to the ingress of sea water into the fresh water aquifers turning them saline. The rainfall patterns, water resources, geology/hydro-geology vary from region to region along the coastal belt. -

Biodiversity of Butterflies in Endosulfan-Affected Areas of Kerala, India
Raghavendra et al. The Journal of Basic and Applied Zoology (2020) 81:58 The Journal of Basic https://doi.org/10.1186/s41936-020-00192-w and Applied Zoology RESEARCH Open Access Biodiversity of butterflies in endosulfan- affected areas of Kerala, India K. N. Raghavendra, Kumar Arvind, G. K. Anushree and Tony Grace* Abstract Background: Butterflies are considered as bio-indicators of a healthy and diversified ecosystem. Endosulfan was sprayed indiscriminately in large plantations of Kasaragod district, Kerala which had caused serious threats to the ecosystem. In this study, we surveyed the butterflies for their abundance and diversity in three differentially endosulfan-affected areas viz., Enmakaje—highly affected area, Periye—moderately affected area, Padanakkad— unaffected area, carried out between the end of the monsoon season and the start of the winter season, lasting approximately 100 days. Seven variables viz., butterfly abundance (N), species richness (S), Simpson’s reciprocal index (D), the Shannon–Wiener index (H′), the exponential of the Shannon–Wiener index (expH′), Pielou’s evenness (J) and species evenness (D/S), related to species diversity were estimated, followed by the one-way ANOVA (F = 25.01, p < 0.001) and the Kruskal-Wallis test (H = 22.59, p < 0.001). Results: A population of three different butterfly assemblages comprised of 2300 butterflies which represented 61 species were encountered. Our results showed that Enmakaje displayed significantly lower butterfly diversity and abundance, compared to the other two communities. Conclusion: So far, this is the first study concerning the effect of endosulfan on the biodiversity of butterfly in the affected areas of Kasaragod, Kerala, India. -
