The Co-ordinator of KRPLLD/CDS, Dr. Narayanan Nair is remembered for his whole hearted corporation and granting financial assistance for executing the project. We sincerely acknowledge all for their help. We are also thankful to all the colleagues of Groundwater Division and Central Water Analysis Lab for their corporation and assistance through out the field investigation and in bringing out this report. Thanks are also due to Kanhangad Block Panchayat authorities and CWRDM Sub center of Kanhangad for their valuable support during the fieldwork. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The project proposal entitled as “ Studies on development of surangam as a non- conventional water resource in Kanhangad Block Panchayat, Kasaragod district, Kerala” has been funded by KRPLLD/CDS with a total budget outlay of Rs. 2.2 lakhs for a period of 18 months. The specific objectives of the project consists of documentation of all the existing surangams in the Kanhangad Block Panchayat, evaluation of their hydrogeological status, estimation of water resources potential and water quality, sustainability of surangams in terms of change in land use, socio- economic analysis among surangam holders, ownership pattern of surangams, cost benefit analysis , technology of construction of surangams and the scope of community based surangams on priority basis in the area.

The 9-day event is a thanksgiving to the divine presence at the temple. It is said that one day, while Ambadi, a member of Ajanur Kadapuram Bhandaraveedu was fishing in the backwaters in the evening, a beautiful lady appeared before him and asked for food. He led the lady to his house and prepared food using the fish he got from the backwaters. While he was serving food to the lady another lady came with the same need. He invited her for food, but she refused to have non vegetarian food. She was then offered Ilaneer (tender coconut). That night, Ambadi had a dream that indicated that the ladies who visited his house were Kurumba Moothaval and Ilayaval and following this he made a temple for them near the Bhandaraveedu. Local Over 10,000 RELEVANCE- NO. OF PEOPLE (Local / National / International) PARTICIPATED EVENTS/PROGRAMS DESCRIPTION (How festival is celebrated) The festival begins with the holy flag hoisting ceremony or Thrikkodiyettam Thrikkodiyettu followed by Kalavara Nirakkal on the first day.
