The Chief Engineer (Transmission South) as per letter read as 1n above submitted a proposal amounting to Rs.77.72Cr for the downstream evacuation works of the 220kV Substation, Thuravoor. The downstream line work includes construction of 37km of 110kV DC feeders by upgrading the existing 66KV SC Vaikom-Cherthala feeders and there after interlinking with the existing 110KV DC feeders to facilitate as outgoing 110kV feeders from the 220kV Substation, Thuravur.

    CENTRE FOR RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (CRD) ANNUAL REPORT 2011-2012 Nileshwaram PO Kasaragod DT- 671314 Kerala State Ph: 04672283177 Cell: 09446403177 Email: [email protected] Website: www.crdksgd.org 1 Foreword Centre for Research and Development (CRD) is a Non Profit Organization registered under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 and has been active in the field of development with various activities since 2002. CRD works in close association with Developmental Agencies under various programmes and schemes. The core activity of the organization consists of Planning, Executing and Monitoring of Integrated Watershed Management Programmes. In the reporting period, The Local Self Government Department of Government of Kerala have accredited CRD as one of the Service Providers to implement Sanitation programmes through the Gramapanchayats. In the reporting period, we have completed the participatory study project supported by NABARD to explore the farm practices of 101 select farmers and to publish the details in a book form. This book, lead farmers series-I was released by the CGM, NABARD. In the year 2009, we have been appointed by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) as the Resource Support Organization (RSO) for its Watershed Projects in Kasaragod District under Prime Minister’s Distressed District Package Programme for three years. On successful completion of the implementation of RSO project, NBARD has extended the project for two more years. It is a great achievement for us that CRD to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the three cluster watershed projects with a total area coverage of 16738 Ha under Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP) of the Government in Parappa and Kanhangad Block Panchayats of Kasaragod DT.

    PONNANI PEPPER PROJECT HISTORY Ponnani is popularly known as “the Mecca of Kerala”. As an ancient harbour city, it was a major trading hub in the Malabar region, the northernmost end of the state. There are many tales that try to explain how the place got its name. According to one, the prominent Brahmin family of Azhvancherry Thambrakkal once held sway over the land. During their heydays, they offered ponnu aana [elephants made of gold] to the temples, and this gave the land the name “Ponnani”. According to another, due to trade, ponnu [gold] from the Arab lands reached India for the first time at this place, and thus caused it to be named “Ponnani”. It is believed that a place that is referred to as “Tyndis” in the Greek book titled Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is Ponnani. However historians have not been able to establish the exact location of Tyndis beyond doubt. Nor has any archaeological evidence been recovered to confirm this belief. Politically too, Ponnani had great importance in the past. The Zamorins (rulers of Calicut) considered Ponnani as their second headquarters. When Tipu Sultan invaded Kerala in 1766, Ponnani was annexed to the Mysore kingdom. Later when the British colonized the land, Ponnani came under the Bombay Province for a brief interval of time. Still later, it was annexed Malabar and was considered part of the Madras Province for one-and-a-half centuries. Until 1861, Ponnani was the headquarters of Koottanad taluk, and with the formation of the state of Kerala in 1956, it became a taluk in Palakkad district.
