 Subject seminars, journal clubs of interest in geriatrics -moderated by our faculty.  Rotational posting in department of geriatrics.  Faculty take active part in teaching, including bedside clinical teaching sessions.

5. TEACHING LEARNING & CONTENT ENRICHMENT:  Involved in UG curricular innovation in assn. with an All group of faculty of academic excellence.  3 Faculty are part of GERG (Geriatric Education & Research Group) formed with 28 eminent faculty in the field of geriatrics.  Developing the 22 core competencies pertaining to the field of geriatric medicine – outlined in the MCI document „CBME UG Curriculum for the IMG, 2018‟.  Free certificate course - Teaching is imparted in a modular format, over 2 months.  1st course in this series was conducted during August – September 2020.  Dr. Prabha Adhikari is one of the 2 founding members of this group (the other being Prof. Alka Ganesh, former HOD Dept of Medicine CMC, Vellore).

6. COLLABORATIONS:  Department collaborates with MediAcion Germany for Palliative care courses.  Certificate Course in Palliative Care (emphasis on geriatric care) modules:

The department has trained a number of graduate/post graduate medical doctors and also given an exposure to final year medical students on the subject. 150 Government doctors working in Dakshina and around 150 Nurses & other Paramedical personnel were trained by us in Geriatrics and Palliative care by 2 day workshop in the year 2019. Mr. Jochen Becker-Ebel, CEO, MediAcion, Germany has anchored many of our programs over the years – offline and recently, online as well.

 Music Therapy course:

In collaboration with Mrs. Cordula Dietrich, Psychiatrist & Music Therapist, Germany, department has successfully trained many doctors and allied health workers in music therapy. These programs will continue on a periodic basis.

We proposed to introduce Music therapy online course in collaboration with department of ENT, YMC.

 Observation of International Calendar events for Elderly: World elder abuse awareness day (June 15th), world senior citizen day (Aug 21st), world Alzheimer day (Sept 21st) and month, & international day of the older persons (Oct 1st). 7. RESEARCH PROJECTS: FACULTY:

Scored Trial (Ongoing): A randomized double-blind, placebo- controlled, paralled group, multicenter study to demonstrate the effects of Sotagliflozin on cardiovascular and renal events in patients with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular risk factors and moderately impaired renal function - (received Rs. 8,28,879.20 out of grant allotted Rs.25 lakhs). 2. Dr. Prathvi Nandalike: Presented poster on Development and validation of the questionnaire for capturing palliative care needs of the elderly in India – Yenepoya university empathy questionnaire (Yempathy) at National 17th Annual conference of the Indian Academy of Geriatric –GERICON 2019 at Christian Medical College Vellore 6th and 7th December 2019.

10. CONFERENCES/CMEs/Symposiums/Workshops/Guest Lectures/Scientific Society meetings etc CONDUCTED: 1. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 25-06-2019: World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was observed on 25/06/2019 between 2pm-4pm. The panel discussion was opened by Dr. Prabha Adhikari, HOD Geriatric Medicine showing the statistics of Elder Abuse in Mangalore which 51% compared to country average of 25%. Mrs. Lidwin Lobo, former professor in St. Aloysius College and Roshni Nilaya and currently Vishwas Trust Elder helpline incharge mentioned about >1000 elder abuse cases, most of which were for financial reasons. Abandonment was also reported. Dr. Sydney D‟Souza, HOD Medicine inaugurated the panel discussion with a comment. Dr. Prathvi Nandalike, faculty from Geriatric Medicine commented that all of us have to take care of our parents first. Dr. Abhinav, postgraduate student, opined that we have to detach ourselves from mobiles and spend time with elders. Miss. Mushida a final year student, opined that we must take care of all the elders and respect them. Some students got motivated to do a documentary on the topic. 96 Students, 5 postgraduates and 6 faculty attended the programme. 2. CME in Palliative care: Held on 14-08-2019 - was attended by 52 participants. Inauguration was done by Vice-Chancellor Dr. M Vijayakumar. Dr Jochen Becker conducted 2 sessions on breaking bad news using experiential learning through Psychodrama. Dr Naveen Salin took a lecture on “Intricacies of managing vomiting –mechanistic approach”. Dr Seema Rao delivered a lecture on Psychological distress. Panel discussion on De-escalating treatment in Palliative care setting was a great eye opener for all the participants. All were updated with latest ICMR guidelines and Supreme Court judgment. 3. Music therapy workshop 12th to 13th September 2019 - Module 1: Regional Workshop on Music Therapy in Palliative Care was conducted by the Centre of Palliative Care, Yenepoya Deemed to be University from 12-13th September 2019. The resource faculty was Dr Cordula Dietrich, Psychiatrist and Music Therapist from Berlin, Germany. 4. Music therapy workshop 16th to 18th September 2019 - Module II: Regional Workshop on Music Therapy in Palliative Care was conducted by the Centre of Palliative Care, Yenepoya Deemed to be University from 16th -18th September 2019. The resource faculty comprised of Dr. Cordula Dietrich, Psychiatrist and Music Therapist from Berlin, Germany, Dr T.V. Raghuveer, Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dr. Gangadhara Somayaji, Registrar of Yenepoya University. 5. Regional Observation of World Alzheimer’s day at Town hall on 21-09- 2019. 6. World Elders Day on 05-10-2019: The unit of Geriatric Medicine organised a guest lecture on World elder Day “Lecture Demonstration on Yoga” by Mr. Muddu Krishna, Yoga expert from Mysore on 5th October 2019 at EMD Building Auditorium. He demonstrated complex asanas and educated people on the value of yoga. Nearly 60 elders participated in the programme. 7. CME on Dementia Related Behavior: On 26-10- 2019 CME and workshop on „Dementia Behavior Management‟ was conducted for 104 participants at Yenepoya Medical College - jointly by the Departments of Geriatric Medicine, General Medicine, and Psychiatry. CME was inaugurated by Dr C.V Raghuveer, Pro Vice- Chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be) University, urged every participant to acquire skills of managing dementia behavior without psychiatry medications. Dr. Prabha Adhikari, H.O.D of Geriatric Medicine welcomed everyone. She thanked PAGE and other NGO‟s who have supported Alzheimer‟s movement in Mangalore. She charted out the proposed activities for elderly and care givers during the Alzheimer‟s month. Dr. Raghuveer emphasised the need to care for elderly people, especially those with dementia. Dr. Prem Narasimhan, senior consultant Geriatrician, Juslok Hospital, Mumbai - who was the chief guest – emphasised on the need for creating dementia awareness in the society. Good teacher award for the outstanding contribution in teaching on the occasion of Teacher Day held on 05-09-2019 at EMD Auditorium RECOGNITIONS: Dr Prabha Adhikari: 1. Invited faculty to deliver a lecture on – „Exercise prescription for Diabetes, How much is too much‟ - at International Diabetes Update held at Chennai from 19-21st July 2018. 2. Was one of the guest-of-honour for the Inaugural function for the meeting on Senior citizens rights conducted by the department of Social Justice and District Health Officer on 19-07-2018.

Honoured at National Geriatric Conclave held at New Delhi by Apollo group of Hospitals and Geriatric Society of India on 20th and 21st of April for contributing a chapter in book in the Handbook of Geriatric Care. 4. Visiting “Susheg Trust” residential care facility for Neuropalliaitve care regularly. 2. 14 module cognitive simulation activities have been started for 22 people as a weekly activity under the direction of Dr Prabha Adhikari at Chethana premises every Saturday 3. in association with Spoorthi Trust from 22-05-2019. June 2019 – May 2020: 1. Visiting “Susheg Trust” residential care facility for Neuropalliaitve care regularly. 2. Continuing modules 2-6 of Cognitive stimulation activity for 24 elders who were screened for cognition under Anantha Sowkya project of Seva Bharathi Trust on 06-06- 2019, 13-06-2019, 20-06-2019, 27-06-2019. 3. Participated in Yoga Marathon organized by Yenepoya University on 22-06-2019 4. Awareness Memory walk: launch of World Alzheimer‟s month on 31-08-2019, 08-10 AM 5. Online free Telemedicine consultantation – 64 Patients June 2020 - May 2021: 1. Online exercise programme for elderly through Google meet daily on 04-07-2020 2. Online Yoga training : A month long programme from 03-08-2020 to 03-09-2020 (daily one hour training).
