KUDROLI SRI GOKARNATHESHWARA TEMPLE

This beautiful temple was consecrated by Narayana Guru and is located in the Kudroli area of Mangaluru. It is dedicated to Gokarnanatha, a form of Lord Shiva. This temple was built in 1912 by Adhyaksha HoigeBazar Koragappa.

The dasara festival is celebrated with much grandeur. The dasara celebrations of this temple is popularly called Mangalore Dasara. In addition to idols of Sharada Matha and Maha Ganapati, life-size idols of Nava Durgas are installed in the premises in an attractive way during Navaratri. All religious rites are observed for the entire period.

Tableaux form a special part of the festivities and are taken around the main thoroughfares of Mangalore. On the tenth day, these idols are taken in the grand procession of Mangalore Dasara throughout the city; the procession returns to Gokarnanatha Kshethra on the next day morning where all the above idols are immersed in the lake inside the temple premises.

MANGALADEVI TEMPLE

The Mangaladevi Temple is a Hindu temple at Bolara in the city of Mangaluru. The temple is dedicated to Hindu god Shakti in the form of Mangaladevi. The temple is of significant antiquity and is believed to have been built during the 9th century by Kundavarman, the most famous king of the Alupa dynasty during the 9th century under the aegies of Matsyendranath. As per another legend, the temple is believed to have been built by Parashurama, one of the ten avatars of Hindu god Vishnu and later expanded by Kundavarman.

Mangalore was named after the Hindu deity Mangaladevi, the presiding deity of the temple.According to local legend, a princess from Malabar named Parimala or Premaladevi renounced her kingdom and became a disciple of Matsyendranath, the founder of the Nath tradition. Having converted Premaladevi to the Nath sect, Matsyendranath renamed her Mangaladevi. She arrived in the area with Matsyendranath, but had to settle near Bolar in Mangalore as she fell ill on the way. Eventually she died, and the Mangaladevi temple was consecrated in her honour at Bolar by the local people after her death. The city has got its name from this temple.

SOMESHWARA TEMPLE & BEACH, SUMMER SANDS BEACH RESORT

Situated at the banks of Arabian Sea at Someshwara village, the temple is also popularly known as Rudrapada Kshetra. Historically it is said to have been built by Kings of Alupa Dynasty in the 10th century A.D. The temple was under the Administrative rule of Kadambas of Banavasi, and Choula Kings of Ullala of the 12th century A.D. The two inscriptions found in the temple says that it was renovated in the 15th century A.D. at the time of Vijayanagara Kingdom.

The name ‘Someshwara beach’ is derived because of Lord Somanatha temple standing since several centuries on the sea shore. Atop of the rock located at the beach, one can see the magnificent view of the Arabian Sea and enjoy the sunset & can have a cup of cofee and dinner in Summer Sands resort built in the British era. A stay overnight is worth it.

KADRI MANJUNATHESHWARA TEMPLE

The temple of Manjunatheshwara on the hills of Kadri is a very beautiful and popular temple in Mangalore. It is said to be built during the 10th or 11th century. The idol of Lord Manjunathaswamy of the temple is called as oldest of the South Indian temples.

According to the legend, Parashurama who lived in Sahyadri, killed the kshatriyas who were unkind and donated the lands to Kashyapa. He prayed to Lord Shiva to settle down, who assured him that if he performs a penance at Kadali (Kadri) kshetra, then Lord Shiva would reincarnate as Manjunatha for the welfare of the world.

As per Lord Shiva's instructions, Parashurama threw his axe into the sea and formed a place for his penance.
