INTRODUCTION

Mangalore University was established on September 10, 1980 to cater to the higher educational needs of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu Districts. The University Campus is situated in a picturesque location and is a major centre for advanced academic studies and research. Although Mangalore University is one of the youngest Universities in the country, it has within its ambit some of the oldest and prestigious institutions of higher learning. There are 25 post graduate departments in the University Campus offering 40 Post Graduate programmes. Along with this, P.G. Diploma in Yogic Science and Cyber Security, Embedded System, three months certificate programmes in Yogic Science and 1 month Introductory programmes (Yogic Science I and II) are being taught. There are 2 Post Graduate departments with 12 P.G. programmes and a P.G. Diploma programme in Yogic Science are being offered at Jnana Kaveri P.G. Centre, Chikka Aluvara, Kushalnagar, Kodagu District. University College, Mangaluru offers 6 Post Graduate programmes along with one year P.G. Diploma in Yogic Science and 3 months certificate programmes in Yogic Science. In the University Evening College at Mangaluru, 5 P.G. programmes, Certificate and Diploma programmes in French and German languages are being offered. Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa College, Madikeri offers 5 P.G. programmes and one year P.G. Diploma programme in Yogic Science. The University Campus at Mangalagangothri is located at a distance of about 20 Km south- east of the city of Mangalore. The campus is spread over an area of about 350 acres and is on a high elevation overlooking the Arabian Sea on the one side and the Western Ghats on the other. Since its establishment, the University has made considerable progress in the field of higher education and research. The campus has hostel facilities for both men and women. The central facilities on the campus include a well equipped Library; Computer Centre; world class scientific laboratories such as CARRT, CARER, PURSE and Microtron Centre; University Science Instrumentation Centre, Health Centre, Directorate of Student Welfare,Yakshagana Kala Kendra, Mangala Auditorium and Multi Gym. A Day Care Centre, an English Medium Pre-primary, Primary and High School, Pre-University College and Mangalore University First Grade College have been in operation successfully. University First Grade College at Nelyadi was established during the academic year 2018-19. Shopping complex and the University Employees Credit Co-operative

Society are located on the campus. There are two well-furnished guest houses on the campus. A Canteen, Bank, Post Office, Transportation and other modern communication facilities are also available on the campus for the benefit of students. The campus also has good facilities for Sports and Games. Besides sports, short-term programmes for staff and students in Yoga are frequently conducted by the University. Lectures, workshops and training programmes are organized under different endowment chairs. The co-curricular and cultural activities reflecting the multicultural ambience of the region are conducted on the campus. The Prasaranga unit is engaged in the dissemination of knowledge and separate cells to cater to the needs of OBC and SC/ST students are housed on the campus. The campus has a large footprint for international students from over 40 countries. The campus has a Counselor for the benefit of both staff and students.

The Salient Features of the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) (Semester Scheme) Each course in a programme shall carry certain number of credits, which normally represent the weightage of a course and are a function of teaching, learning and evaluation strategies such as number of contact hours, the course content, teaching methodology, learning expectations, etc. In the proposed programmes, the credits shall be based on the number of instructional hours per week, generally 1 credit is equivalent to one hour of instruction in theory, or 1 or 2 hours of tutorial, or one and a half or two hours of practical/ field work/project work/internship per week.

The other features of the CBCS (Semester Scheme) are: a) The P. G. Degree Programmes are structured on Credit Based Semester Scheme. b) The relative importance of subjects of study and activities are quantified in terms of credits. Total credit of the programme is between 84 to 92. c) Each programme of study will have “Core” and “Elective” courses. The Core course will further consist of “Hard” and “Soft” core courses. Hard core courses will have 3-5 credits while soft courses will have 3-4 credits. d) Two or more Open Elective courses of 3 credits (Except programmes under Management discipline) each shall be offered in the II and III semesters by every Department. Open elective will be chosen from a programme not related to the programme of study within the faculty or across the faculty. e) The declaration of result is based on the Grade Point Average (GPA) earned towards the end of each semester and the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) earned towards the end of the programme with corresponding alpha sign grade.

CENTRAL FACILITIES LIBRARY Mangalore University has a spacious library having about 2,00,000 books, about 23,000 back volumes apart from reports, theses, etc. covering a wide variety of subjects. It has a good collection of about 270 research and general interest journals on wide range of subjects. It has access to over 7500 journals in Full Text from UGC-INFONET. Besides, Audio-visual facility, Computer Aided Retrieval, CD-ROM Work Station and Reprographic Service (Xerox) are available in the Library. Cyber lab with 50 stations is available for accessing e-journals.

HOSTEL FACILITIES The University has three well-furnished hostels(Men, Women and Working Women) with the following facilities: 24 hrs. security, Solar water heater, water purifier, Power generator back up, well-furnished guest rooms, meditation room, Indoor sports facilities, Library, Emergency medicine and conveyance to hospital. Fee refund will be given to the SC/ST students who have been admitted to University Hostel under SC/ST Amelioration Fund.

CAFETERIA There is a centrally located canteen on the University campus, which caters to the needs of students, faculty and the general public. Canteens are also available in the New Administration Building.

HEALTH CENTRE There is a health centre on the campus to take care of the medical needs of students, faculty and officials of the University. Attached to it are a Dental Clinic and Pathology Lab.

STUDENT WELFARE A separate Directorate of Student Welfare looks after the student welfare programmes in the University. The students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities such as literary and cultural competitions, inter-collegiate and inter-university competitions. ANTI-RAGGING CELL The University has established an Anti-ragging Cell and a committee to check and protect students from all forms of ragging.

PLACEMENT CELL Mangalore University has established Placement Cell which helps students to find placement. And also established Counseling Cell to overcome their problems.

SPORTS FACILITIES A separate Directorate of Physical Education looks after the sports activities. The campus has 400 mtrs. track, sports field, tennis courts, gymnasium and Indoor games stadium that cater to the needs of students, faculty and sports lovers.

POSTAL AND BANKING SERVICE A full-fledged Post Office is located in the Science faculty building. The State Bank of India and Bank of Baroda are functioning with ATM facilities. Karnataka Bank and Union Bank of India have opened their ATMs on the campus.

TRANSPORT SERVICES The campus is about 20 kms. from the Mangalore central bus station as well as the Mangalore central railway station. The campus is connected with good public transport system with the frequency of 5 minutes.

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES The administrative offices of the University are housed in the Administrative Building, Mangalagangothri, Konaje. The offices of the Vice-Chancellor, the Registrar, the Registrar (Evaluation) and the Finance Officer are located in this building.

EMPLOYMENT, INFORMATION AND GUIDANCE BUREAU The University Employment, Information and Guidance Bureau located in the separate building at Mangalagangothri campus, provide information on programmes and careers. Lectures and seminars are arranged in various colleges to highlight employment opportunities. Information about programmes in other universities within the country and abroad are also provided. Students can register their names for employment assistance at the bureau.

MAA The University has the committed Alumni Association and the same functions under the name ‘Mangala Alumni Association(MAA)’. All those students who get Degree from Mangalore University are the members of MAA.

Mangalore University Campus, Mangalagangothri is located about 18 Kilometres from Mangalore Railway Station/Mangalore City/KSRTC Bus Stand (Bejai). The Service Bus Stop at State Bank Circle is within one km from the Mangalore Central Railway Station.

• To reach Mangalore University campus, board the city buses (Route No. 51, 51A, 51E, 55) and if you get-down at Mangalore Junction Railway Station, you can catch the same buses by coming to Pumpwell Circle Bus Stop by Auto with a minimum fare. • Alternatively, shuttle buses towards BC Road/Vitla via Konaje are available from State Bank Circle, Jyothi Circle and Pumpwell Circle Bus Stops to reach the campus. • The KSRTC buses starting from KSRTC bus stand towards Mudipu are also available to reach the campus via Jyothi Circle. If you travel by private vehicle, the campus is about 30 minutes’ drive from Mangalore City.
