Do you want to learn German? The International Office offers Intensive German Language Courses at different Ievels free of charge for exchange and full degree students during the semester. All guest students - regardless of their study program - are welcome to participate. A placement test at the beginning of the semester - after the Welcome Meeting - is optional for all participants. Based on the test's results, the International Office assigns students to different course Ievels according to their specific knowledge of German. There is always a class for absolute beginners. Other foreign languages are taught, including French, Spanish, and Russian etc. 1.5. Canteen and Cafeteria The main responsibility of the Studentenwerk is to prepare and distribute food. For lunch the canteen (Mensa) offers at least 4 main dishes, out of which one is vegetarian. They also offer a variety of beverages, snacks, as well as salads. Students’ meals are financially supported by the Thüringer Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft und digitale Gesellschaft. Students pay between 1,50 and 3,50 Euro per meal. Canteen Hours: Monday through Friday: 7 am – 2 pm. Opening hours are different during the semester breaks. 8 Cafeteria Hours: Monday through Thursday: 10 am – 7 pm. Thoska Card The Thoska Card is a multifunctional chip card, which combines the functions of magnetic cards, identification cards and keys. Administration and payment processes can be made more efficient, faster and more customer-friendly. Thoska has an integrated chip, which allows contactless data communication in the context of various applications. For example you can pay your food in the canteen and use the laundry machine with your Thoska Card. 9 In this area you –as Thoska Card holder- can use the train for free. 1.7. Residence Halls of the ‘Studentenwerk’ The residence halls in Schmalkalden offer accommodation for 540 students. There are two- and three-bedrooms-apartments available. The residence hall Wohnheim Blechhammer, on campus, has one- bedroom-apartments in living quarters with a sanitary room and a kitchen area. The monthly rent is 155 or 230 Euro (including utilities). The residence hall Wohnheim Martin-Luther-Ring is about 10 minutes by foot to the university. The rooms in this building are mainly single bedrooms in three- or four-bedrooms-apartments with kitchen and bathroom. One room costs between 155 and 230 Euro. 10 You can do laundry in the residence hall Blechhammer and Martin Luther Ring on the first floor/basement. There are washing machines and a dryer which can be used with your Thoska Card. 1.8. Most important information about living in the dorm The content of the rental contract are the rental conditions, the house rules and the assignment order. If you break the rules there is dissuasion, a notice to the International Office and information to your university in your home country. That can also lead to dismissal without notice.
