    MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science 2011 PREPRINT 417 Pietro Daniel Omodeo Sixteenth Century Professors of Mathematics at the German University of Helmstedt A Case Study on Renaissance Scholarly Work and Networks SIXTEENTH CENTURY PROFESSORS OF MATHEMATICS AT THE GERMAN UNIVERSITY OF HELMSTEDT A Case Study on Renaissance Scholarly Work and Networks Pietro Daniel Omodeo This paper investigates the research activity and the teaching of the professors of mathematics at the University of Helmstedt in the sixteenth century as well as their academic collaboration in Germany and abroad.1 It moreover aims to evaluate the meaning of their work and networks for the development of early modern science, in particular astronomy. In order to obtain this overview, I (1.) briefly introduce the University of Helmstedt in its specificity, focusing on the chairs of mathematics. (2.) I consider in detail who the professors were who held the chairs of mathematics, what their education, scientific activity, publications and teaching were, and who the scholars were with whom they collaborated. Finally, (3.) I provide an outline of the academic network of Helmstedt mathematicians. This case study is part of a wider project on the mathematical research and teaching in early modern German universities and on the (national and international) networks of mathematicians (or scholars of disciplines related to mathematics, like cosmology, physics and natural philosophy). A preliminary note on the sources of this overview Documents concerning professors at the University of Helmstedt are preserved in the archive Niedersächsisches Staatsarchiv Wolfenbüttel under the signature 37 Alt. Further documents relative to academic curricula and lectures (the so-called ordines lectionum) are preserved partly in the Herzog August Library of Wolfenbüttel and partly in the Hauptstaatsarchiv of Hannover.

    Fortunate Survivors: Maps and Map Fragments in the Bagford Collection Tom Harper Described quite correctly as ‘maps and fragments’,1 for the contents of a composite volume in the British Library known as Harl.5935 a more thorough evaluation is long overdue. These include printed maps from books dating from the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries, as well as cuttings from maps, engravings of scientific instruments, and at least three separately issued maps which are not known to exist elsewhere. The volume into which they have been attached is one of 129 scrapbooks of prints put together by the antiquary and book dealer John Bagford (1650-1716), an interesting character best known for accumulating parts of books rather than whole ones. Bagford was especially interested in title-pages and printing samples. These comprise the bulk of the collection, and it is upon them that attention has previously been focused. In the first comprehensive catalogue of the collection, for example, maps may eventually be found amongst proposals, colophons and adverts in a section entitled ‘some items of interest other than title-pages’.2 Clearly, as only five volumes of the collection are known to contain more than one map, it is understandable why they have been overlooked.3 A description of the volume in the ‘Rough List of the Contents of the Bagford Collection’ of 1902 gives special mention to Edward Wright’s 1599 two-sheet world map ‘of extraordinary rarity’, a sentiment also expressed by William Younger Fletcher in his biography of Bagford that same year.4 Equally scarce but previously unmentioned material includes a fragment of a map of the Holy Land, a single sheet of Jacob van Deventer’s wall map of Friesland and another from a version of Gaspar Vopel’s map of Europe, all from the sixteenth century, and these are placed amongst other maps which reflect in some way Bagford’s antiquarian interests.

    THE EDICT OF TORDA By Mike McPhee [This is the text of an Address given at the Sydney Unitarian Church on 25 February 2018.] At a time when Unitarians everywhere have joined with our confreres in Transylvania and Hungary to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the Edict of Torda, it is fitting that we revisit that pivotal event in the history of our denomination. It was on 12 January 1568 that Prince John II Sigismund of Transylvania issued that Edict, persuaded by the arguments of the Unitarian bishop, Francis Dávid, which affirmed the religious free- dom of all of his Catholic and Protestant subjects. I have spoken on this event and the history of the Transylvanian church before but, this time, I want to look at that period in greater detail. Of particular importance today will the critical geopolitical situation that was unfolding in Central Europe at that time. In order to do that, it must be understood how different the map of Europe looked in the mid-1550s. The Kingdom of Hungary was much larger in 1500 than the country we know, taking in Slovakia, Croatia, parts of Serbia and, of course, Transylvania, which is now part of Romania. However, the Ottoman Empire was by then the second most populous state in the world and, with its powerful armies, had been expanding in the Balkans for almost two centuries. Under the personal command of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the Hungarian fortress of Belgrade was taken in 1521, followed by the disastrous Battle of Mohács in 1526, in which King Louis II was killed.

I analyse and compare the correspondence of three influential cosmographers, Sebastian Münster (1488-1552), Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), and Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598). The networks of these men, their locations, contacts, and the routes by which information traveled, shaped and limited their cosmographies. These influences challenge prevailing constructions in the historiography on sixteenth-century science which would see Münster as more traditional and medieval, and Ortelius as more empirical and modern. Each cosmographer was looking for novel information in different contexts. Münster and others revealed rigorous approaches to novel Hebrew scholarship and its application to cosmography, rivaling the approaches of cosmographers who applied non-traditional geographical knowledge.
