Welcome

Dear Friends, UPCOMING Thank you for joining us this holiday season at The Old Globe. 2006 has been an incredi- ble year for the Theatre, having just wrapped up our enormously popular production of George LA PASTORELA Gershwin Alone. The Summer Shakespeare Festival was one of the most successful in Globe history, and three world-premieres graced our stages, including the TwylaTharp/Bob Dylan December 5 - 23, 2006 musical THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’, which is currently playing to sold-out audiences Cassius Carter Centre Stage on Broadway. This year also saw the launch of our $75 million Capital Campaign to help build the Globe’s endowment and enhance facilities. nnnn We are thrilled to welcome back for its ninth year our delightful holiday musical, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, made possible through the generosity of Audrey Geisel, The San Diego Union-Tribune, and other sponsors. And while the Grinch is playing on the Globe stage, ACE Broadway audiences will also have the chance to witness our exciting holiday tradition as the January 13 - February 18, 2007 production makes its New York debut this month. We are so pleased to bring this holiday favorite to San Diego year after year, along with Old Globe Theatre many Grinch outreach programs in the community. In addition to providing 4,000 free tickets for underserved children throughout the run, the Globe is again presenting the Grinch nnnn Children’s Literacy Initiative, an ongoing project in conjunction with our annual Seuss-abra- tion event, as well as our popular Grinch Family Experience, offering fun hands-on theatre activities for families while raising money for the Globe's education programs. P6 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE Education Experiences

More than 40,000 children and adults in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside Counties participate each year in The Old Globe’s education and outreach programs, ranging from reading initiatives for underserved schools to touring performances in high schools to public lectures with artists and educators.

THE GRINCH CHILDREN’S INITIATIVES Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is more than just a play on the Globe’s stage – it also offers a series of education programs and celebrations, collectively known as The Grinch Children’s Initiatives, that capture the spirit of the season and production by giving back to the community.

Through the support of individuals and companies, the Globe provides more than 14,000 children with free or greatly discounted tickets to a live performance of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.

One event during the Grinch performances is Seussabration, which celebrates the play’s opening with 600 students from Title One schools, who spend a day in Balboa Park. The students enjoy a matinee performance, meet Globe artists, play in falling snow and eat lunch before returning to their schools with 2005 SEUSSABRATION EVENT, PHOTO BY SANDY HUFFAKER additional educational materials.

GRINCH FAMILY EXPERIENCE To support the Globe’s education programs, this year on Sunday, December 3, families will gather to create craft activities together at the Grinch Family Experience, which also includes lunch and preferred theatre seating. To reserve your seats to this exclusive event or for more information, please call (619) 231-1941, x2317 or email [email protected]

THE GLOBE’S LITERACY INITIATIVE This new initiative has been developed from a component of The Grinch Children’s Initiative, through which Globe docents and Globe Teaching Artists worked with more than 1,100 students who wrote their own stories and plays in English, Spanish and French as part of the Globe Readers Program. Some of the most moving stories came from students through the International Rescue Committee, who described in detail their recent immigration to the United States from Cuba, Afghanistan and Iraq, which were read and performed on the Globe’s Cassius Carter Centre Stage this summer. A GLOBE VOLUNTEER READS TO STUDENTS AS PART OF GLOBE READER PROGRAM.

THE SHAKESPEARE INITIATIVE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE This program provides the opportunity for high school, junior college and university students to study the life and times of Shakespeare and his plays, while enhancing their English, Drama and History/Social Studies curriculum through in-class presentations, observing rehearsals and attending a performance during the Globe’s Shakespeare Festival with pre- and post-show discussions. The Globe’s 2007 Summer Shakespeare productions include Hamlet, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Measure for Measure. OUTREACH TOURING PRODUCTIONS Through this program, the Globe produces plays specially created for young audiences. This past October and November, more than 5,000 students attended performances of The Stones, an imaginative and thought-provoking work which addresses the importance of teens taking responsibility for their actions and considering consequences of their decisions. The play is based on a true story of how a harmless game transformed from prank to crime when two teenagers kicked a rock off a freeway overpass resulting in a fatal car crash. To schedule future plays in the Outreach Touring Production series for your school or community site, contact Raúl Moncada at (619) 231-1941, x2141 or email at [email protected].

P18 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P19 Education Experiences continued ARTS EDUCATION IN THE CLASSROOM As a result of the reduction of arts education funding in San Diego County schools, The Old Globe will continue to increase its presence in the classroom through pre-show workshops by Globe Teaching Artists before students attend a matinee performance at the Globe. Already scheduled are student matinees for August Wilson’s Two Trains Running and Edward Albee’s classic, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? For more information, contact Raúl Moncada at (619) 231-1941, x2141 or email at [email protected].

“FOLLOW THE BARD” TOURS Middle and high school student groups are invited to take a field trip to the Globe for a behind-the-scenes “Shakespeare Scavenger Hunt." Throughout the tour, students discover how the magic of theatre is created on the Globe’s three stages and search for hidden objects that introduce details of Shakespeare's plays and characters, as well as Elizabethan history and folklore. For reservations or more information about tours, contact Raúl Moncada at (619) 231-1941, x2141.

THE OLD GLOBE OFFERS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AND ADULTS TO GET CLOSER TO THE ART ON STAGE

INSIGHTS SEMINARS A great opportunity to get closer to the art, Insights Seminars with actors, designers and directors are offered for each Old Globe production. Artists from all phases of the production process meet with patrons in a lively exchange of ideas and insights that enhance the theatre-going experience. Insights Seminars begin at 6:30pm in the theatre where the production is performed, and conclude with an informal champagne reception. Reservations are requested. The seminars are FREE to all donors and subscribers. For those not in either category, single seminars are $5.

POST-SHOW FORUMS Join us after Globe performances for an informal question and answer session with the cast and creative team, who will share with you the “inside story” of creating a character and putting together a production.

BACKSTAGE TOURS Discover how the magic is created with a behind-the-scenes tour of The Old Globe, including a backstage look at the Old Globe Theatre, the Cassius Carter Centre Stage and the Lowell Davies Festival Theatre. Public tours are offered most Saturdays and Sundays at 10:30am. Tickets: $5 for adults; $3 for seniors/students/military. Please call (619) 231-1941 x2142 for information and reservations.

CRAIG NOEL, Founding Director During Craig Noel's distinguished 67-year career with The Old Globe, the much-honored director has staged over 225 productions of all styles and periods. Craig has been associated with The Old Globe since its community-theatre inception in 1937 when he made his debut as an actor. Two years later he accepted his first directorial assignments, staging four of the season's seven productions. Since then, Craig has guided the organization through its metamorphosis from a community theatre of the highest standards to one of the nation's most successful not-for-profit theatres. In doing so, he has enriched the quality of life in San Diego for generations of citizens who have become today's theatre-goers and arts supporters.

P22 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE Capital Campaign

The Old Globe $75 Million Capital Campaign We Still Need Your Annual Fund Support!

“Securing a San Diego Landmark,” the Globe’s five-year fundraising campaign, was launched in March to raise $75 million before the Theatre’s 75th Anniversary in 2010. With lead gifts from Donald and Darlene Shiley and Conrad Prebys, this Campaign has raised more than $46 million to date.

These campaign gifts are designated for specific purposes, such as facilities construction or endowment, and do not support the Globe’s annual artistic and education programs. For this reason, the Globe must continue to raise $7 million each year in annual contributions – from ticket buyers and subscribers like you – to support an operating budget of $17 million.

Your annual contribution plays a critical role in helping fund artistic and education programs, and we encourage you to support the Globe with a new or increased annual gift today.

When you contribute, you receive special benefits, including backstage tours, free lectures by Globe artists and access to the Lipinsky Family Suite. To learn more or to contribute, contact Courtney Quinn at (619) 231-1941 x2311 or [email protected].

The Old Globe Theatre now has new seats, thanks to the generosity of many of our community members, bringing your comfort level up to that of Globe performance quality. Installing these beautiful new seats and carpeting has been a major undertaking, and we hope you will help us defray the costs by naming one or more of the new seats. Sponsor a seat for $5,000, and we will inscribe your name on a brass arm-rest plaque, as a acknowledgment of your leadership in Globe support. The Old Globe begins the 21st Century with national and international artistic presence like never before. Reserve your place in the history of The Old Globe by calling our Development Office at (619) 231-1941 x2309 today.
