NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

LETTER FROM BARRY AND TIM We believe that theatre serves the public good. We believe that theatre matters and our commitment is to make theatre matter to more people. Those beliefs are shaped through our core values of transformation, inclusion, excellence, stability, and impact. This spring we’re particularly proud of the range of diverse and inclusive stories we are telling with our shows.

American Mariachi, which we’re happy to say is sponsored by the Globe Guilders, is the heartwarming, vibrant story of memory and loss, intertwined with the story of the formation of an all- female mariachi band. It’s attracting a brand-new audience to the Globe while entertaining our traditional one. In The Wander- ers, the funny and insightful Globe-commissioned work directed by Barry and written by Globe favorite Anna Ziegler, young Orthodox Jews embark on an arranged mar- riage while a different couple confronts the challenges of a contemporary relationship. Following those two stunning plays will be the theatrical adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s best-selling novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, which is the haunting and hopeful epic story of three generations of Afghan women set in the war-torn neighborhoods of 1990s Kabul, Afghanistan. Native Gardens is an uproarious exploration of two wildly different neighboring couples’ notions of race, taste, class and privilege.

In addition to this exciting and diverse programming, the Globe continues to make theatre matter to more people through our many arts engagement programs, including Globe for All; free student mat- inees; and AXIS, our free cultural events outside the theatres on Copley Plaza. The Arts Engagement de- partment, with the help of many Guilders, recently hosted the international Shakespeare in Prisons con- ference during which 150 theatre practitioners from around the world gathered at the Globe to discuss how to make theatre matter to some of our most vulnerable citizens.

We remain grateful to you, extraordinary Globe Guilders, for making all that possible. Because of your enthusiastic and tireless dedication and generosity to the Globe, you are making theatre matter to more people.

We look forward to Celebrating Couture in August and many more fun Globe Guilder activities this year!

Sincerely Yours,
