More than 700,000 Lithuanian-Americans live in the United States, many in South Florida who will be waiving the Lithuanian flag and welcoming their team and first MLB player at the reception on November 4th. Some History The relationship between the United States and Lithuania is one of friendship, open communication and support. A country in Europe roughly the size of West Virginia with a population of 3 million people, Lithuania was introduced to basketball and baseball in the late 1920s. Perhaps because winters in Lithuania are cold and snowy, it was basketball, a sport played mostly indoors, which initially captured the country’s imagination and brought Olympic and NBA fame to the country. Years later, in 1987 Virmidas Neverauskas, considered a pioneer of baseball in Lithuania, learned that Cuban students were studying and playing baseball in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. He traveled from Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, to watch the Cubans play – and to buy baseball gloves and other equipment from them. Under Russian occupation, equipment was hard to come by and players had been using winter gloves as mitts. It wasn’t until Lithuania regained its independence in 1991 that interest in baseball began to grow. Virmidas Neverauskas began single-handedly building the sport in Lithuania, realizing that if the country didn’t have kids playing baseball, the sport had no future there. He began to teach and train young people, with a goal to have his students play in MLB. Teams participated in tournaments across Europe and in 2013 Lithuania was recognized as the best league organization in Europe. In 2017, Dovydas Neverauskas, his son, was signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a pitcher, a realization of Virmidas Neverauskas’s dream of having a player in MLB. Dovydas made his MLB debut on April 24, 2017 at PNC Park when the Pirates played the Chicago Cubs. Baseball has struggled in Lithuania, from Soviet occupation, lack of proper training facilities and a back seat to the national sport, basketball. Nonetheless, Virmidas Neverauskas is tireless in his quest to make baseball popular in his country. He recently secured land for a baseball field and training complex in Vilnius. Organizers say that Under Virmidas Neverauskas, the future of baseball in Lithuania is bright. “Because baseball is such a big sport in the US, Lithuanian players dream of playing there,” says Neverauskas. “This trip is helpful for our kids’ motivation and their participation will help raise interest in Lithuania for baseball,” he added. The welcome reception is sponsored by the Kazickas Family Foundation, Lietuviu Fondas and JAV Lietuviu Bendruomenės Krašto Valdyba. Address author correspondence to Adam Evans at [email protected]. Lithuanian Acculturation in UK Basketball http://dx.doi.org/10.1123/ssj.2015-0028 Shooting for Lithuania: Migration, National Identity and Men’s Basketball in the East of England Adam B. Evans University of Copenhagen David Piggott Leeds Beckett University The accession of the ‘A8 states’ into the European Union initiated considerable migration into Western Europe. The impact upon local communities has seen significant attention, yet little research exists that focuses upon migrant experiences and identity specifically in sport. This study used a figurational framework to investigate the lived experiences of basketball among male Lithuanian migrants in the rural east of England. Semistructured interviews highlighted participants’ motivations to migrate, their acculturation experiences and the role that basketball played during their sojourn. Participants considered basketball a significant means for the expression of national identity and as a focus for their resistance to local racializing processes. Conversely, conflict with established local basketball communities and perceptions of marginalization among migrants were common, creating divisions in local basketball competitions. In May 2004 a group of eight Eastern European states, the ‘Accession 8,’ (or A8) countries joined the European Union (Gillingham, 2010). This action removed many previous restrictions to international labor laws and initiated a phase of migration from the A8 countries into Western Europe, including half a million migrants into the United Kingdom (UK) between 2004 and 2006 (Blanchflower et al., 2007; Pemberton & Scullion, 2013).

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Dominican Baseball An Exploration of the Modern Major League Baseball Academy System A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Art Latin American Studies by Andrew Mitchel 2020 © Copyright by Andrew Mitchel 2020 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Dominican Baseball An Exploration of the Modern Major League Baseball Academy System by Andrew Mitchel Master in Latin American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2020 Professors Bonnie Taub, Co-Chair Professor Lauren Derby, Co-Chair This project is about Major League Baseball’s (MLB) developmental academies in the Dominican Republic (henceforth D.R.). Athletes from across Latin America, once signed, begin at this first level of Minor League Baseball to prove their sporting abilities, learn English and become consummate professionals. This thesis concerns both the history of the United States (U.S.)-D.R. relationship through the lens of baseball, and ethnographic fieldwork completed at one MLB academy in the D.R. in summer 2019. The research included watching Dominican Summer League games, touring the facility, interviewing staff and sitting in on a high school equivalency course. It analyzes various so-called ‘signs of universality’ as to how baseball is played worldwide: language/ritual, camaraderie, food, education and masculinity. The historical context surrounding the relationship between the nations shows how the baseball academy is one just type of neoliberal and neocolonial enclave in the Dominican Republic. Concluding thoughts cover where this system stands as of 2020 and what can be done to ensure ideal conditions for these teenage players. Keywords: anthropology of sport; U.S.-D.R.
