DX Fanzine No. 88 – December 2020 DX Fanzine No. 88 – December 2020 DX Fanzine, an electronic newsletter which was originally edited in 1999/2000, brings together tips and news as contributed by individual DXers or ascertained from different sources. We are interested in any change in frequencies, times, language-services, transmitters, programme contents, phone and fax-numbers, electronic and postal address, station personnel. The purpose of DX Fanzine, which doesn’t pretend to be in competition with any other electronic DX newsletter, is to provide timely and topical news and information to shortwave enthusiasts worldwide. It is available on the web at www.dxfanzine.com and updated as soon as loggings, DX news, frequency updates, as well as, QSL notes are received from any SWL around the world. Although the primary platform for delivery of DX FANZINE information remains its web site, it is turned into a pdf file, (where you can see the final version of it with loggings and information, just as they appear online), a couple of days after the end of each month and sent out FREE to anyone who has subscribed. The current as well as the previous editions of DX Fanzine (including those of years 1999/2000!) can be accessed from its home page and are there almost indefinitely. UK: Legoland cancels Muslim family fun day in fear of “guest and employee safety” – Legoland cancelled a family outing organized by a prominent Muslim scholar in fear of guest and staff safety after they received a number of threatening calls, emails and social media posts. The family fun day which was organised by Sheikh Haitham al Haddad of the Muslim Research and Development Foundation (MRDF) for Sunday 9th March and would not be going ahead after a barrage of violent messages were made by far- right Islamophobic extremists. The English Defence League, Casuals United and other far-right groups vowed to hold a protest outside Legoland, many threatening to use violence to prevent the family outing. Legoland issued the following statement: The Legoland Windsor Resort prides itself on welcoming everyone to our wonderful attraction; however due to unfortunate circumstances the private event scheduled for Sunday 9th March will no longer take place. This was an incredibly difficult made after discussions with the organisers and local Thames Valley Police, following the receipt of a number of threatening phone calls, emails and social media posts to the Resort over the last couple of weeks. These alone have led us to conclude that we can no longer guarantee the happy fun family event which was envisaged or the safety of our guests and employees on the day – which is always our number one priority. “Sadly it is our belief that deliberate misinformation fuelled by a small group with a clear agenda was designed expressly to achieve this outcome.

Foreword Humans of Europe – Europe for Humans was a UK-wide campaign launched by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 2017 and 2018. When this project was conceived, the aim was to highlight some of the thoughts and feelings of everyday citizens on Europe. But how could these thoughts be conveyed in an intuitive and powerful way? We decided to take to the streets and have an open discourse with people from all over the UK - mostly from Brighton, Bristol, Glasgow and London - from all walks of life and share the results through social media. By combining portrait photography and conversation extracts, the public were invited to share in the personal narratives of those people on any aspect of Europe. Combining these media allowed us to establish a connection with people we might usually never have crossed paths with and gain impressions of our commonalities, as well as disparities of thought with regards to Europe.

    SINGING OFF CHARNEL STEPS: THE WAR POETRY OF EMILY DICKINSON AND ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING by LEIGH-ANNE URBANOWICZ MARCELLIN (Under the Direction of Douglas Anderson) ABSTRACT Emily Dickinson and Elizabeth Barrett Browning are not known primarily as war poets. However, Dickinson addressed the American Civil War in both her letters and in a substantial number of poems, while Barrett Browning wrote extensively about the Risorgimento, the struggle of the Italian states for independence and unification during much of the nineteenth century. The first chapter of this project treats Dickinson’s letters that refer to the war, revealing how the poet engaged with this conflict in her correspondence with her Norcross cousins, Samuel and Mary Bowles, and Thomas Wentworth Higginson. In the second chapter, Dickinson’s war poetry is examined in detail. These poems about the soldiers who fall in battle and those who mourn them do not present a coherent political view, but rather suggest multiple stories and meanings. The third chapter includes poems less directly related to the war: poems about peace, revolution, patriotism, race, and the wars within nature and within ourselves. These works show how integral the Civil War was to Dickinson’s world view. The fourth and final chapter investigates Barrett Browning’s political and martial poems, focusing on three areas: her hero-worship, her position as an English poet writing about Italy, and her treatment of gender in these works. An examination of these themes illuminates the complexity of Barrett Browning’s Risorgimento poetry and the extent to which she wrestled with the political, philosophical, and social issues the Risorgimento brought to the fore.
