Nasceva per opera di un gruppo di studiosi postcolonia- listi dell’università veneziana: principale artefice e pro- pulsore della rivista era ed è sempre stato Giulio Marra, che l’ha diretta dalla sua creazione fino al 2013, anno del suo congedo ufficiale dalla vita accademica. La Direzione attuale del Tolomeo ringrazia Giulio Marra per l’opera coraggiosa di innovatore da lui svolta e per le costanti e amorose cure prestate alla nostra, alla sua rivista nel corso di tanti anni. Questo numero speciale è quindi dedicato a Giulio, da parte di tutti i colleghi, studiosi e studenti che ha saputo coinvolgere in questa impresa, che continua con nuovi abiti ma con lo stesso spirito ed entusiasmo. UK: Legoland cancels Muslim family fun day in fear of “guest and employee safety” – Legoland cancelled a family outing organized by a prominent Muslim scholar in fear of guest and staff safety after they received a number of threatening calls, emails and social media posts. The family fun day which was organised by Sheikh Haitham al Haddad of the Muslim Research and Development Foundation (MRDF) for Sunday 9th March and would not be going ahead after a barrage of violent messages were made by far- right Islamophobic extremists. The English Defence League, Casuals United and other far-right groups vowed to hold a protest outside Legoland, many threatening to use violence to prevent the family outing. Legoland issued the following statement: The Legoland Windsor Resort prides itself on welcoming everyone to our wonderful attraction; however due to unfortunate circumstances the private event scheduled for Sunday 9th March will no longer take place. This was an incredibly difficult made after discussions with the organisers and local Thames Valley Police, following the receipt of a number of threatening phone calls, emails and social media posts to the Resort over the last couple of weeks. A CASE STUDY OF MILLENNIUM PARK A Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Corrinn Conard, B.A. ***** The Ohio State University 2008 Masters Examination Committee: Approved by Dr. James Sanders III, Advisor Advisor Professor Malcolm Cochran Graduate Program in Art Education ABSTRACT For centuries, public art has been a popular tool used to celebrate heroes, commemorate historical events, decorate public spaces, inspire citizens, and attract tourists. Public art has been created by the most renowned artists and commissioned by powerful political leaders. But, where is the public in public art? What is the role of that group believed to be the primary client of such public endeavors? How much power does the public have? Should they have? Do they want? In this thesis, I address these and other related questions through a case study of Millennium Park in Chicago. In contrast to other studies on this topic, this thesis focuses on the perspectives and opinions of the public; a group which I have found to be scarcely represented in the literature about public participation in public art. To reveal public opinion, I have conducted a total of 165 surveys at Millennium Park with both Chicago residents and tourists. I have also collected the voices of Chicagoans as I found them in Chicago’s major media source, The Chicago Tribune . The collection of data from my research reveal a glimpse of the Chicago public’s opinion on public art, its value to them, and their rights and roles in the creation of such endeavors.

    Authorial and Editorial Voices in Translation Wednesday 2nd November 2011 - KUA Auditorium 23.0.49 Michelle Woods: Sense and Censorship: Authors and the Agents of Change In 1969, Milan Kundera sent an angry public denunciation of his English publishers to the Times Literary Supplement, comparing them to the "Moscow censors" who had delayed the publication of his first novel, The Joke, for two years, and who would ban all his work in Czechoslovakia in 1970. Kundera suggested that the substantial cuts to the text, and reworking of the novel's chronology, amounted to a form of market censorship by the editors and publisher. Kundera is well-known for his antipathy to translators, but in fact much of his ire focused on the editing of his translations, performed by people with no knowledge of the language or culture behind his work, and whose bottom line rested on selling a commercially viable product. To what extent can the work of those handling translations - editors, publishers, directors, producers - become a form of censorship? Is is possible, or even helpful, to speak of censorship when looking at the work done to translations, once the actual translation work has been completed? What kind of changes are made to translations before they are published or performed? Is there an ideological context behind those changes even in free and democratic societies? Are form and style a battleground in an increasingly homogenous notion of what good, commercially viable writing is? In this paper, I want to use the examples of two Czech writers: Milan Kundera and Václav Havel, to examine the pressures placed on translators and writers by those other agents (or, as Maria Tymoczko writes, "external constraints").
