AnnualAnnual ReportReport fforor 20122012 1 OUR RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Charles E. Smith, whose name unites our campus services, had a personal recipe for successful living. He called it his “Prescription for Longevity,” and it must have worked well because he reached 94, vibrant and influential. He recommended waking at 7 and beginning the day by considering, “How can I help my community?” His recipe included applying olive oil over the entire body (an idea he noted was borrowed from King Solomon), 20 minutes of stretching, eight glasses of water a day, no smoking or alcohol, and in pleasant weather, squeezing in some golf, swimming or brisk walking. Charles E. Smith Life Communities also has a “Recipe for Success.” What are our key ingredients?

Infuse with Generous Amounts of Community Support ■ Philanthropic giving – our “bread and butter.” In 2012, we wrapped up a successful Centennial Campaign chaired by Audrey and Marc Solomon. We continue to be especially appreciative of the continuing support of a generous community in light of governmental reimbursement cutbacks and growing community need. ■ Volunteer leadership – our “iron chefs.” Capable individuals serve selflessly on our lay Board of Governors, committees and task forces, bringing expertise in diverse fields to benefit our campus. ■ Service volunteers of all ages sweeten day-to-day life for our 1,000+ elders – a “drizzle of honey.”

Stir Thoroughly with Quality Care and Services ■ Our State Pay-for-Performance rating and Federal 4-star rating confirm the strides made in quality services. Two of our quality projects were selected as poster presentations at the Maryland Patient Safety Center’s national conference; we are the only long-term care organization chosen. The two quality projects are (1) Closing the Gap in Transitional Care: Medication Reconciliation between Hospital Discharge and Admission to Long Term Care (joint project with Suburban/Johns Hopkins) and (2) Adopting Evidenced-Based Best Practices for the Prevention and Resolution of Pressure Ulcers in the Long-term Care Environment.

OUR MISSION OUR VISION

2 The Charles E. Smith Life Communities ■ Cutting-edge programming includes person-centered care, our innovative approach to memory care, and ensuring our organizational values permeate our campus. ■ Our broad spectrum of services addresses community needs for options in care, choices for senior living and successful outcomes for rehabilitation to be able to return home. In 2012, we dedicated the spectacular new Cohen-Rosen House for memory care and opened the Dekelboum Therapy Center, and our residents are enjoying the new Ratner Beauty Salons, ELNO Mall, Fink Family Lobby and Rutstein Wi-Fi Café in the Wasserman Residence.

Steward our Resources Responsibly ■ The organization was able to refinance its debt, significantly lowering those capital-related costs. ■ Our ability to control costs effectively has been a critical component of our stability over the long term and particularly in the past several years of economic downturn and uncertainty.

Blend Well with Dedicated Staff ■ It is amazing to note that 91 of our staff have worked with us 20 years or more, and 281 have 10 or more years of service. We include in this report the names of our dedicated nurses and nursing assistants, physicians, housekeepers and cooks, computer specialists and engineers, accountants and administrative assistants, and all those essential to the care of our residents. ■ Our “Great Place to Work” initiatives position us as an employer of choice in the marketplace. The pages of this report acknowledge the hundreds of individuals who have taken active roles in fulfillment of our mission of community service and in contributing to our recipe for success. It’s a recipe with staying power, one that is destined to remain a “family favorite” long into the future.

CHARLES E. SMITH

Charles E. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington Jewish community. Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the Hebrew Home from 1959–1962, he boldly laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969 move to its current Rockville campus.

Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging continuum of care on our campus, his son and son-in-law, Robert H. Smith and Robert P. Kogod, and their families made an extraordinary $12 million investment in our future. Our name, adopted in May 2006, unites our entities, sustains both the legacy and leadership of Charles E. Smith and honors the memory of a remarkable leader.

As we move into 2013, charitable contributions will help to bridge the gap between public reimbursements for Medicaid residents and the actual cost of care, and help fund the growth in programs and services described in this report.

Since the founding of the Hebrew Home in 1910, we have counted on the charitable support of the community to help us fulfill our mission to shelter and care for the area’s frail elderly. For 54 years, the annual Guardian Campaign has provided this critical unrestricted support. These dedicated Guardian Campaign Committee members spearheaded the 2012 campaign, which raised $847,000 to help the Hebrew Home fulfill its mission. Guardian Campaign Chairs Jeffrey Distenfeld and Jeffrey Pargament presented a check to CEO Warren Slavin and Chair Andy Friedlander at the Starlight Lounge, showing the amount raised as of December 13.

AnnualAnnual ReReportport forfor 2012 1919 SET ASIDE AND ALLOW DOUGH TO RISE: Legacy Gifts

BUILDERS OF THE FUTURE Builders of the Future Society members have taken steps today to benefit our residents into the future. They have created legacies in their wills, through charitable gift annuities, and by naming the Hebrew Home as a beneficiary of a trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy. Each year, we welcome new and current Builders of the Future Society members at a festive luncheon. We appreciate each of these generous commitments.

20 The Charles E. Smith Life Communities PERMANENT AND DESIGNATED FUNDS The Hebrew Home’s resources are strengthened by gifts from generations of donors, including those who have established Permanent or Designated Funds. Named permanent funds can be created in memory of someone dear, in honor of a person or an event, or for the direct benefit of those we serve. The term “Permanent Fund” indicates the original gift creates an endowment from which earnings will be distributed. A “Designated Fund” is totally expended for the specific purpose chosen by the donor. We owe all of the wonderful donors who have created or donated to these funds during 2012 a debt of gratitude for their generosity and compassion.

YOUTH PHILANTHROPY The Harold and Shirley Robinson H2YP Youth Philanthropy Program is an innovative program that gives local high school students the opportunity to act as a foundation board, listening to presentations about proposed projects and coming to a consensus on how charitable dollars should be allocated on our campus. The 2012 participants funded a geriatric training arm for clinical staff training, electronic media for Revitz residents, life-enriching Shakespeare and Park Naturalist programming and adaptive equipment for recreation therapy.

We also thank the hundreds of volunteers who contributed less than 100 hours of service. Each year the Kitty Davis Award is presented to an outstanding volunteer who has provided exceptional volunteer service to the residents. We congratulate Everett Mattlin, this year’s honoree.
