Samoan Submission Machines: Grappling with Representations of Samoan Identity in Professional Wrestling Theo Plothe1 Savannah State University [email protected] Amongst the myriad of characters to step foot in the squared circle, perhaps no ethnic group has been as celebrated or marginalized as the Samoans who have made their names in professional wrestling. The discussion of Samoan identity in the context of sport has examined Maori identity and masculinity in New Zealand, among other topics, but there has yet to be work which considers Samoans within professional wrestling. This research investigates Samoan identity through a content analysis of televised wrestling matches. This research identifies six primary stereotypes under which Samoan identity is portrayed. These portrayals of Samoan characters, I argue, flatten the representation of this ethnic group within wrestling and culture at large. Keywords: Samoans, identity, representation, gimmicks Introduction Among the myriad of characters to step foot in the squared circle, perhaps no ethnic group has been as celebrated or marginalized as the Samoans who have made their names in professional wrestling. This research investigates the identity of Samoans within professional wrestling, and the different ways they are constructed and presented to audiences. “Gimmicks,” characters portrayed by a wrestler “resulting in the sum of fictional elements, attire and wrestling ability” (Oliva and Calleja 3) utilized by Samoans have run the gamut from the wild uncivilized savage, to the sumo (both in villainous Japanese and comically absurd iterations), to the ultra-cool mogul who wears silk shirts and fancy shoes. Their ability to cut promos, an important facet of the modern gimmick allowing wrestlers to address their opponents and storylines, varies widely as well, but all lie within their Samoan identity.

An Ongoing Process of Modernization: Libraries and Librarianship in Estonia Aira Lepik Abstract Libraries are a component of our ever-changing social environment. Organizational change in libraries involves many activities, includ- ing the development of mission statements, the refinement of goals regarding the role of the library in the knowledge society, the re- structuring of organizations, the use of information and communica- tion technologies, the training of librarians, and the management of finances. Estonian libraries are information centers that support research and innovation by providing the access to scholarly and professional information; supporting education, lifelong learning, and cultural development; introducing world culture; ensuring in- formation provision to all social groups; supporting the development of the information society through the implementing new technolo- gies; contributing to the integration of the European information treasury; and helping to gain an international reputation for Estonia. An Introduction to Estonia The Republic of Estonia (EestiVabariik) is a state in the Baltic region of northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the south by Latvia, and to the east by Lake Peipsi and the Russian Federation. Across the Baltic Sea lies Sweden in the west and Finland to the north. The territory of Estonia covers 45,227 square ki- lometers (17,462 square miles) and is influenced by a humid, continental climate. The Estonian language is a Finno-Ugric language closely related to Finnish, and distantly to Hungarian and to the Sami languages.

  • Exploring Gender Expressiv Fashions Honors Thesis
IT’S ALL A BLUR: EXPLORING GENDER EXPRESSIV FASHIONS HONORS THESIS Presented to the Honors College of Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Graduation in the Honors College by Natalie Victoria Arida San Marcos, Texas May 2017 IT’S ALL A BLUR: EXPLORING GENDER EXPRESSIV FASHIONS by Natalie Victoria Arida Thesis Supervisor: _______________________________ Dr. Gwendolyn Hustvedt, Ph.D. Family Consumer Science Approved: ____________________________________ Heather C. Galloway, Ph.D. Dean, Honors College Abstract: Gender expressive fashion is a way of dress where individuals can show what gender role they are filling that day. Someone who identifies as gender-fluid may change their role every day because they do not identify with any one sex. Individuals who classify themselves as gender-neutral do not identify with any sex; they can be considered unisex or genderless. An androgynous person exhibits characteristics from both sexes, and this can be shown through gender expression as well as sexual expression. A transgendered individual is someone whose gender identity is different from their assigned sex at birth. Over the past few years there has been an increasing acceptance for these different gender expressions, and with that has come a large fashion movement. Through history different gender expressive fashions have been popular trends with the masses; and through my research I aim to uncover if the current fashion movement will repeat history and fade away or, if this is a new social reality that will forever change gender expression. In order to do this, I will first define four different gender expressions, and then research the historical fashion trends for each category, followed by the current fashion for the different expressions.
