Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin August 2006 Dedication This dissertation is dedicated to Magdalena Maria Kost, who probably never would have understood why it had to be written and certainly would not have wanted to read it, but who would have been very proud nonetheless. Acknowledgments This dissertation would have been impossible without the assistance of many extremely capable and accommodating professionals. For patiently guiding me in the early research phases and then responding to countless followup email messages, I would like to thank Antoinette Beiser and Marty Hecht of the Lowell Observatory Library and Archives at Flagstaff. For introducing me to the many treasures held deep underground in our nation’s capital, I would like to thank Pam VanEe and Ed Redmond of the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. For welcoming me during two brief but productive visits to the most beautiful library I have seen, I thank Brenda Corbin and Gregory Shelton of the U.S.

Confinement of Fermions in Tachyon Matter at Finite Temperature Adamu Issifu,1, ∗ Julio C.M. Rocha,1, y and Francisco A. Brito1, 2, z 1Departamento de F´ısica, Universidade Federal da Para´ıba, Caixa Postal 5008, 58051-970 Jo~aoPessoa, Para´ıba, Brazil 2Departamento de F´ısica, Universidade Federal de Campina Grande Caixa Postal 10071, 58429-900 Campina Grande, Para´ıba, Brazil We study a phenomenological model that mimics the characteristics of QCD theory at finite temperature. The model involves fermions coupled with a modified Abelian gauge field in a tachyon matter. It reproduces some important QCD features such as, confinement, deconfinement, chiral symmetry and quark-gluon-plasma (QGP) phase transitions. The study may shed light on both light and heavy quark potentials and their string tensions. Flux-tube and Cornell potentials are developed depending on the regime under consideration. Other confining properties such as scalar glueball mass, gluon mass, glueball-meson mixing states, gluon and chiral condensates are exploited as well. The study is focused on two possible regimes, the ultraviolet (UV) and the infrared (IR) regimes. I. INTRODUCTION Confinement of heavy quark states QQ¯ is an important subject in both theoretical and experimental study of high temperature QCD matter and quark-gluon-plasma phase (QGP) [1]. The production of heavy quarkonia such as the fundamental state ofcc ¯ in the Relativistic Heavy Iron Collider (RHIC) [2] and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) [3] provides basics for the study of QGP. Lattice QCD simulations of quarkonium at finite temperature indicates that J= may persists even at T = 1:5Tc [4] i.e.

  • PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW
PATTO – the JOHN HALSEY INTERVIEW Patto, apart from being one of the finest (purely subjective, of course) bands this country ever produced, were not blessed with good fortune. Forever on the verge of making it really big, they broke up after six years of knocking on the door and finding no-one home. Subsequently, two of their number died while the other two were involved in a terrible car smash which left one with severe physical injuries and the other with severe mental problems. Drummer John Halsey is now the only Patto member who could possible give us an interview. Mike Patto and Ollie Halsall are both gone, while bassist Clive Griffiths apparently doesn't even recall being in a band! Despite bearing the scars of the accident (Halsey walks with a pronounced limp), John was only too pleased to submit to a Terrascopic grilling - an interview which took place in the wonderful Suffolk pub he runs with his wife Elaine. Bancroft and I spent a lovely afternoon and evening with the Halseys, B & B'd in the shadow of a 12th Century church cupboard and returned to London the next morning with one of the most enjoyable interviews either of us has ever done. John Halsey: I started playing drums because two mates who lived in my road in North Finchley (N. London), where I'm from, wanted to form a group. This was years and years ago, 1958, 1959. Want to see the photo? PT: Oh, look at that! 1959! Me, with a microphone inside me guitar that used to go out through me Mum's tape recorder, and if you put 'Record' and 'Play' on together, it'd act like an amplifier.

  • The 1821 Insurrectionary Scare in Eastern North Carolina. (Under the Direction of James E
ABSTRACT KAISER, JOHN JAMES. “Masters Determined to be Masters”: The 1821 Insurrectionary Scare in Eastern North Carolina. (Under the direction of James E. Crisp.) This thesis seeks to explain how the militia and patrols worked together in a flexible system designed to suppress both real and potential slave unrest. As the summer of 1821 neared its end, depredations committed by runaway slaves caused widespread alarm throughout Eastern North Carolina. Their depredations resulted in an insurrectionary scare that grew to include eight counties in Eastern North Carolina. Although documentation is sparse, there remains a trail of communications between militia officers and Governor Jesse Franklin detailing the scare from its inception. In addition, numerous militia officers wrote the Governor and General Assembly to justify their actions during and after the scare. These letters and petitions provide the story of the 1821 insurrectionary scare. Furthermore, this thesis will place the insurrectionary scare within the context of circumstances prevalent in Eastern North Carolina in 1821. These circumstances included an outbreak of yellow fever, extreme weather, harsh political bickering (both local and national), and a large (and increasing) slave population combined with White flight to the South and West. This thesis begins with the discussion of an unfortunate occurrence on Street’s Bridge that left several militiamen and citizens wounded. Their presence on the bridge was part of a system designed to ensure the subjugation of the local slave population. However, in a highly ironic twist of fate, these two groups of men (citizen and militia) encountered one another on Street’s Bridge. The exchange of fire that resulted caused several casualties on both sides.
