BROCK UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD [1] The three volumes, entitled The Hidden Pearl. The Syrian Orthodox Church and its Ancient Aramaic Heritage, published by TransWorld Film Italia in 2001, were commisioned to accompany three documentaries. The connecting thread throughout the three millennia that are covered is the Aramaic language with its various dialects, though the emphasis is always on the users of the language, rather than the language itself. Since the documentaries were commissioned by the Syrian Orthodox community, part of the third volume focuses on developments specific to them, but elsewhere the aim has been to be inclusive, not only of the other Syriac Churches, but also of other communities using Aramaic, both in the past and, to some extent at least, in the present. [2] The volumes were written with a non-specialist audience in mind and so there are no footnotes; since, however, some of the inscriptions and manuscripts etc. which are referred to may not always be readily identifiable to scholars, the opportunity has been taken to benefit from the hospitality of Hugoye in order to provide some basic annotation, in addition to the section “For Further Reading” at the end of each volume. Needless to say, in providing this annotation no attempt has been made to provide a proper 63 64 Sebastian P. From Achav onwards The latest period in which controversy arises regarding the relationship between the Biblical text and the archaeological record is from the reign of King Achav, in the first half of the 9th century B.C.E., onwards.[1] Archaeological discoveries dating from this time – which many researchers believe to be the period during which the Books of the Torah and of the Prophets were written – do generally accord with the textual account, and therefore scholars acknowledge the basic reliability of the Tanakh’s historical descriptions from this period onwards. These discoveries are very exciting in their own right, lending a powerful sense of connection to the world of the Tanakh through a direct, unmediated encounter with the remains of the concrete reality described in the text. Indeed, the discovery of the first relevant findings, in the 19th century, refuted some prevalent critical approaches which had maintained that all the biblical narratives were later creations, severed from any historical context. We shall discuss some of the most famous findings relating to narratives about the Israelite kingdom from the period of Achav onwards. 1. Aramaic Studies Aramaic Studies 10 (2012) 7–21 brill.com/arst 吀he Use of Paratextual Elements in Targum Research Alberdina Houtman Protestant 吀heological University—Kampen Abstract Targum manuscripts and early printed editions consist of more than just the text. 吀hey also include diverse paratextual elements to give the user information on how to read and under- stand the text. 吀his information can be very useful in research on interpretation and textual history. 吀he added information is sometimes difficult to interpret because the key to how to interpret and weigh the information is not always obvious. In this article some kinds of para- textual information are discussed within the context of cultural historical Targum research, such as the project of ‘A Jewish Targum in a Christian World’. Keywords Paratext; Targum Jonathan; manuscripts Just as clothes make the man, so paratext makes the book. In the words of the famous literary theorist Gérard Genette, paratext is that which enables a text to become a book and to be offered as such to the public.1 If we read a book, we o昀ten think that we are reading just a text, being unaware of how all kinds of paratextual information in that book influence our assessment of what we read. Elements such as page layout, spaces, titles, headers, and illustrations, to a large extent shape how the written text is used and interpreted. 吀his was just as true in the Middle Ages as it is today. Different editions of the Hebrew Bible contain paratextual elements that are meant to help the reader understand the text or to steer him or her in a certain direction. -

Assyria and Syria: Synonyms? John Joseph, Ph.d. Professor Richard N. Frye very appropriately begins his article by saying that “Confusion has existed between the two similar words ‘Syria’ and ‘Assyria’ throughout history down to our own day.” His article, unfortunately, perpetuates the confusion.1 In his concluding remarks, Frye tells us what his discussion of the usage of “Assyrian/Syrian” has shown. It “shows two facts clearly,” he writes: First, “Confusion in Western usage between Syria for the western part of the Fertile Crescent, and Assyria for the ancient land east of the Euphrates”; Second, “The Eastern usage, which did not differentiate between the two except under Western influence or for other external reasons.” Let us look at these two findings more closely: FIRST: WESTERN USAGE OF “SYRIA” AND “ASSYRIA”: There was a time when the West [the Greeks], not fully familiar with the Near East, did not differentiate between Syria and Assyria, especially when the Assyrians were still in power. But as early as the fifth century B.C., about two centuries after the fall of Nineveh, Herodotus very clearly differentiated between the two terms and regions. Randolph Helm’s researches show that Herodotus “conscientiously” and “consistently” distinguished the names Syria and Assyria and used them independently of each other. To Herodotus, writes Helm, “Syrians” were the inhabitants of the coastal Levant, including North Syria, Phoenicia, and Philistia; he “never [emphasis Helm’s] uses the name Syria to apply to Mesopotamia.” To Herodotus Assyria -

02-230680 039-054 12/10/10 11:10 Page 39 Strata: Bulletin of the Anglo-Israel Archaeological Society 2010 Volume 28 The Contribution of Khirbet Qeiyafa to our Understanding of the Iron Age Period YOSEF GARFINKEL, SAAR GANOR AND MICHAEL HASEL The site of Khirbet Qeiyafa is tremendously important for understanding various aspects of the archaeology and history of the Iron Age, and the biblical tradition. It seems to contradict many assumptions which were strongly advocated by scholars of the ‘minimalist’ schools for nearly 30 years. This article evaluates the contribution of the site to the study of surveys and reconstructing settlement patterns, chronology and the transition from Iron I to Iron IIA, social organisation of Iron IIA in Judah, city planning, pottery repertoire of the 10th century BCE, preparation and consumption of food, household archaeology and writing. I. Introduction Khirbet Qeiyafa is located in the western part of the high Shephelah (Israel map grid 14603–12267), on the summit of a hill that borders the Elah Valley on the north. This is a key strategic location in the Biblical kingdom of Judah, on the main road from Philistia and the Coastal Plain to Jerusalem and Hebron in the hill country (Figs. 1–2). Two km. to the west lies Tell Zakariyeh, commonly identified as Biblical Azekah, and 2.5 km. to the southeast is Khirbat Shuweikah, commonly identified as Biblical Socoh. About 12 km. west of Khirbet Qeiyafa is Tell es-Safi, where the central Philistine city of Gath was located. In the 10th and 9th centuries BCE, Gath was a prominent city-state, over 30 hectares in size.
