Instructions for Authors

Scope

Aramaic Studies (ARST) brings all aspects of the various forms of Aramaic and their literatures together to help shape the field of Aramaic Studies. The journal, which has been the main platform for and Studies for some time, is now also the main outlet for the study of all Aramaic dialects, including the language and literatures of , Achaemenid Aramaic, Palmyrene, Nabataean, Aramaic, Mandaic, Syriac, Rabbinic Aramaic, and Neo-Aramaic.

Ethical and Legal Conditions

The publication of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed work is expected to follow standards of ethical behaviour for all parties involved in the act of publishing: authors, editors, and reviewers. Authors, editors, and reviewers should thoroughly acquaint themselves with Brill’s publication ethics, which may be downloaded here: brill.com/page/ethics/publication-ethics-cope-compliance.

Online Submission

Aramaic Studies uses online submission only. Authors should submit their manuscript online via the Editorial Manager (EM) online submission system at: editorialmanager.com/arst. First-time users of EM need to register first. Go to the website and click on the "Register Now" link in the login menu. Enter the information requested. During registration, you can fill in your username and password. If you should forget this username and password, click on the "send login details" link in the login section, and enter your e-mail address exactly as you entered it when you registered. Your access codes will then be e-mailed to you. Prior to submission, authors are encouraged to read the entire ‘Instructions for Authors’. When submitting via the website, you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files. A revised document is uploaded the same way as the initial submission. All correspondence, including the editor’s request for revision and final decision, is sent by e-mail.

Double-Blind Peer Review The Journal uses a double-blind peer review system, which means that manuscript author(s) do not know who the reviewers are, and that reviewers do not know the names of the author(s). When you submit your article via Editorial Manager, you will be asked to submit a separate title page which includes the full title of the manuscript, the names and complete contact details of all authors, the abstract and the keyword texts, and any acknowledgement texts. This page will not be accessible to the referees. All other files (manuscript, figures, tables, etc.) should not contain any information concerning author names, institutions, etc. The names of these files and the document properties should also be anonymised.

File Format Acceptable file formats include.doc, .docx, .rtf, .jpg, and .tif. Embed the fonts in all word documents, and if there is Aramaic, Syriac or other non-Roman fonts, also upload a pdf of the manuscript file. In addition to the main document and title page, authors should submit separate files for each figure and table.

Submission Requirements

Authors who would like their manuscripts to be considered for publication in ARST are strongly advised to contact the Editors prior to completion of their final manuscript. Manuscripts must be prepared in accordance with the present guidelines, which ultimately go back to the Sheffield Manual (J.A. Clines, The Sheffield Manual for Authors & Editors in (Manuals, 12; Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 1997, sheffieldphoenix.com/covers/sheffieldmanual.pdf).

Language Articles may be submitted in English (British), French, German. Spelling in the language used should be consistent throughout. The Editors may demand correction by a native speaker at the author’s expense.

Unicode and Non-Roman Fonts Authors should ensure that they use a Unicode-friendly font such as the Brill (brill.com/page/BrillFont/brill-typeface). It presents complete coverage of the Latin script with the full range of diacritics and linguistics (IPA) characters used to display any language from any period. Hebrew, Greek, , Armenian, Syriac, Christian Palestinian, Ethiopic and Coptic scripts may be used, if entered in Unicode. Other scripts must be transcribed or transliterated in italics in accordance with scholarly custom. A rather complete font is the KadmosU Greek font, which is a free download. Even more complete is New Athena Unicode. The preferred Unicode font for Hebrew texts is the SBL Hebrew Open Font, which is available as a free download from the SBL fonts site (sbl-site.org/educational/BiblicalFonts_SBLHebrew.aspx). The Estrangela Edessa font is part of the standard Windows XP distribution. Manuscript Structure

Manuscript Title and Author Affiliation The title, author name(s) and affiliation(s) should all be flush left. The title should be in 16 points bold, the author(s) name(s) in 12 points italic, and the short affiliation, in 10 points roman.

Abstracts and Keywords Authors of articles should provide an abstract of 50–150 words. This abstract will be published online on our website (brill.com/arst) and printed in the Journal itself. There should also be 3-8 keywords.

Headings Headings should be numbered, and placed flush left. 1 This Is the First Heading 1.1 This Is the Second Level Heading 1.1.1 This Is the Third Level Heading

Footnotes The journal uses footnotes rather than a bibliography. In the body of the article, put the footnote numbers after punctuation: This sentence contains ‘one quotation’;1 and ends with a footnote and a full stop. The first time a work is cited please provide full bibliographic details. After this, an abbreviated note text should be used: Surname, Book Title, pp. x-x; Surname, ‘Short article title’, pp. x-x. Do not use ‘ibid.’, ‘idem’, or ‘op. cit.’. Frequently cited editions may be abbreviated according to the list in Appendix 2. More than one reference given in one footnote should be separated by a semi-colon (;).

Abbreviations The Journal uses abbreviations of periodicals, serials, and reference works, given below in Appendix 3. For abbreviations of biblical books and other frequently cited texts, see Appendix 1. All other abbreviations must be specified in one of the first footnotes. For manuscripts from Qumran use of the list published in D.J.A. Clines (ed.), The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew, V. Nun–Mem (Sheffield: Sheffield Academic Press, 2001), pp. 15-27, is recommended.

Quotations The meaning of words, sobriquets, and the like, should be as follows: (‘ . . . ’). Do not include commas and dots within the quotation marks. Hebrew, Syriac, and other languages sufficiently differentiated by their own font are not put between inverted commas or quotation marks. Verbal quotations, both from ancient and modern authors, as well as direct speech, are shown as follows: (‘ . . . ’), but double quotation marks (“ . . . ”) are used within such a quotation. Punctuation not derived from the source, is placed outside the quotation marks.

Block Quotes Longer quotations are marked as a passage to be indented. They do not have quotation marks and are printed in the same type size as the body text. The scope and nature of available information, on the one hand, and theoretical and philosophical principles, on the other, may result in different evaluation of ‘the probable’.

Figure and Table Files All figures and tables must be cited consecutively in the text. Tables and glosses should not be wider than the typesetting area of the journal, which is 11.5 x 18 cm. Figures should be submitted as separate source files in .eps, .tif, or .jpg format, in a size suitable for the

Instructions for Authors typesetting area of the journal (11.5 x 18 cm). The resolution of these files must be at least 300 dpi for half-tone figures, and 600 dpi for line drawings. Number the files, and indicate in the manuscript where they are to appear (Fig. 1 here). The text in a figure must be legible, and should not be smaller than corps 7. The size of this lettering for any text in a figure should be the same for all figures in the manuscript. Any problems with the copyright or reuse of figures must be dealt with by the author, and mention of permission to reprint should be included in the figure captions.

Supplementary Media / Data Files To support and enhance your manuscript, ARST accepts electronic supplementary material, including supporting applications, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound or video clips, large appendices, data tables and other items that cannot be included in the article PDF itself. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the other manuscript files and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of the broadly accepted file formats for video, audio, etc. and limit the file size (e.g., for video: max. 3 GB). Supplementary files supplied will be published online at FigShare (www.figshare.com), to which reference is made in the published article on Brill Online Books and Journals, and vice versa. Links must be given clearly in the text to this material.

Publication

Proofs Upon acceptance, a PDF of the article proofs will be sent to the author by e-mail to check carefully for factual and typographic errors. Authors are responsible for checking these proofs and are strongly urged to make use of the Comment & Markup toolbar to note their corrections directly on the proofs. At this stage in the production process only minor corrections are allowed. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and, therefore, are not accepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returned promptly.

Offprints A PDF file of the article will be supplied free of charge by the publisher to authors for personal use. Brill is a RoMEO yellow publisher. The Author retains the right to self-archive the submitted (pre-peer-review) version of the article at any time. The submitted version of an article is the author's version that has not been peer-reviewed, nor had any value added to it by Brill (such as formatting or copy editing). Consent to Publish

Transfer of Copyright By submitting a manuscript, the author agrees that the copyright for the article is transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. For that purpose the author needs to sign the Consent to Publish which will be sent with the first proofs of the manuscript.

Open Access Should the author wish to publish the article in Open Access he/she can choose the Brill Open option. Appendix 1. Abbreviations for the Books of the and for the Ancient Versions

The abbreviations are followed by Arabic numerals indicating chapter and verse, separated by a full stop: Qoh. 12.13. Please avoid the use of ‘v.’ or ‘vv.’ to indicate following verses; use ‘vv. 1-3’, but not ‘verses 1vv’. Unambiguous full references are preferred unless it is absolutely clear to which chapter you are referring: Gen. 1.1, 3, 5; Jer. 36.23-24. References from different chapters are separated by a semi-colon: Gen. 1.1, 3; 2.4. Use single hyphens between verses, but an n-dash (–) between chapters. As a rule, abbreviations in the body of the text should be avoided. For the names of biblical books, this means that these should be spelled out in full, except when chapter and verse number(s) are given: Genesis 11, but Gen. 11.1. In brackets and in footnotes, the abbreviated form may always be used.
