Stunz* Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, 6300 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi, Texas 78412, USA Abstract Dolphinfish Coryphaena hippurus support important commercial and recreational fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico. Understanding the feeding ecology of this economically important pelagic fish is key to its sustainable management; however, dietary data from this region are sparse. We conducted a comprehensive diet study to develop new trophic baselines and investigate potential ontogenetic and sex-related shifts in Dolphinfish feeding ecology. The stomach contents of 357 Dolphinfish (27.6–148.5 cm TL) were visually examined from fishery-dependent sources off Port Aransas, Texas. Our analyses revealed a highly piscivorous diet with Actinopterygii comprising 70.44% of the stomach contents by number. The most commonly observed taxa were carangid (12.45%N) and tetraodontiform (12.08%N; families Balistidae, Monacanthidae, and Tetraodontidae) fishes. Malacostracans were also common (24.83%N), mostly in the form of pelagic megalopae. Other prey categories included squid and the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles Lepidochelys kempii. -

Nellbring Asko Laboratory, Institute of Marine Ecology, University of Stockholm, S-106 91 Stockholm, Sweden ABSTRACT: A quantitative investigation of the demersal fish fauna of a 160 km2 archipelago area in the northern Baltic proper was carried out by SCUBA census technique. Thirty-four stations covering seaweed areas, shallow soft bottoms with seagrass and pond weeds, and deeper, naked soft bottoms down to a depth of 21 m were visited at all seasons. The results are compared with those obtained by traditional gill-net fishing. The dominating species are the gobiids (particularly Pornatoschistus rninutus) which make up 75 % of the total fish fauna but only 8.4 % of the total biomass. Zoarces viviparus, Cottus gobio and Platichtys flesus are common elements, with P. flesus constituting more than half of the biomass. Low abundance of all species except Z. viviparus is found in March-April, gobies having a maximum in September-October and P. flesus in November. Spatially, P. rninutus shows the widest vertical range being about equally distributed between surface and 20 m depth. C. gobio aggregates in the upper 10 m. The Mytilus bottoms and the deeper soft bottoms are the most populated areas. The former is characterized by Gobius niger, Z. viviparus and Pholis gunnellus which use the shelter offered by the numerous boulders and stones. The latter is totally dominated by P. -

Species those are distributed from the seafloor to a 5 m depth above, are called demersal and those distributed from a depth of 5 m above the seafloor to the sea surface are called pelagic. The term demersal originates from the Latin word demergere, which means to sink. The demersal fish resources include the elasmobranchs, major perches, catfishes, threadfin breams, silverbellies, sciaenids, lizardfishes, pomfrets, bulls eye, flatfishes, goatfish and white fish. This chapter deals with identification of the major demersal teleost fish species. Survey Report The second leg of the AKES survey with R/V “G.O. Sars”, 19 February-28 March 2008 AKES-2 Ed.: Webjørn Melle, [email protected] Institute of Marine Research, Bergen, Norway, 27.05.08 1 INTRODUCTION The vessel left Cape Town, South-Africa, 19 February 2008 to survey the southern ocean along two transects, to and from Astridryggen, including finer mapping around Bouvetøya and experimental work on krill (AKES). Samples were collected for MARBANK, GENETICS, FISH PATOGENES and the Brazilian fluoride project (BRAZIL). Bathymetry at Astridryggen was mapped acoustically. The cruise ended 28 March 2008, in Walvis Bay, Namibia. The participants are listed in Table 1.1. AKES (Antarctic Krill and Ecosystem Studies) is IMR‟s project to investigate target strength of krill (Euphausia superba) and mackerel ice fish (Champsocephalus gunnari), and the abundance of pelagic fish and squid in the Bouvetøy area. The main objectives are: to evaluate the links between the krill resources and distribution in the area and Bouvetøya based mammals and birds to study krill biology and ecology to establish TS (Target strength; the ability of an organism to reflect sound) for krill and ice fish to study aggregations of krill, fish and plankton relative to the hydrography to compare aggregations and abundance of krill and plankton relative to hydrography in Antarctica and Nordic Seas stomach contents and feeding behavior of krill and fish The University of Oslo‟s krill project is included in the AKES project. The survey is carried out in close relation with CCAMLR (Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources). -

A list of the marine fishes of the Azores is presented. The list is based on a review of the literature combined with an examination of selected specimens available from collections of Azorean fishes deposited in museums, including the collection of fish at the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores (Horta). Personal information collected over several years is also incorporated. The geographic area considered is the Economic Exclusive Zone of the Azores. The list is organised in Classes, Orders and Families according to Nelson (1994). The scientific names are, for the most part, those used in Fishes of the North-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean (FNAM) (Whitehead et al. 1989), and they are organised in alphabetical order within the families. Clofnam numbers (see Hureau & Monod 1979) are included for reference. Information is given if the species is not cited for the Azores in FNAM. Whenever available, vernacular names are presented, both in Portuguese (Azorean names) and in English. Synonyms, misspellings and misidentifications found in the literature in reference to the occurrence of species in the Azores are also quoted. The 460 species listed, belong to 142 families; 12 species are cited for the first time for the Azores. -
