Michael Brauer Issue 64 FEATURE ‘BRAUERIZING’ THE MIX Michael Brauer has mixed The New York-based star mixer, Michael H. the ladder from the proverbial tea-boy beginnings Brauer, has a reputation for eclecticism, both to staff engineer at Media Sound Studios in NYC countless singles and albums in the wide variety of artists and genres he’s worked during 1976-84, picking up tricks of the trade from over the years, developing his with, and in his approach to mixing. Brauer applies some of these in pay very little attention to how I get there. It’s not an idiosyncratic multi-bus compression approach about the toy, it’s about how you use it. Also, I’ve that he’s developed over the last 20 years, which has mixed some 200 songs so far this year and I tend become so refined and specialised that it’s informally to wipe the slate clean after every mix to keep my now referred to simply as ‘MBC’. There are times when Simpson and Brauer. I’ve gained a better understanding of where I want INCREDIBLE to go and realised that the approach I’m taking is A few weeks after our initial conversation, Brauer is “The engineer, Rik Simpson, did an amazing job not going to get me there. So I change. The process on the phone from his mix room in New York, recall on some of the mixes,” relates Brauer. “On 42, Rik of getting there during mixing is always a search. "When we put the last record out, iTunes were prob- ably the fifth or sixth account," he says. "To come back on this record and have them be the No. 1 account in America, that's probably one of the biggest, most sig- nificant differences." At iTunes, digital album pre- orders began May 6, when "Violet Hill" became available as a download, with consumers able to secure a bonus track to be de- livered with it on album release day. The street date version of the album via iTunes will have a different exclusive bonus track, plus an exclusive music video. Holmes also cites the growth of YouTube as a new factor. "So that's a part of your marketing plan now, which it wouldn't have been three -and -a -half years ago. I was cleaning my desk out recently and found an old MySpace marketing plan when they'd come to us on the last record, [when] they had about 400,000 members. We did a big promotion with them, but it's funny looking back that that was a new platform, and social networking in general was not part of your mar- keting plan. Now it's a major part." But the Coldplay manager regards the retail arena as no less vital. "It's just as important to me. People still buy CDs, and Coldplay are one of those artists where a lot of the fans want to own the CD, they want We all had our corner office in a big tower block, but the whole package." there was no vibe.

  • Politics, History, and the Pet Shop Boys
H-Announce Call for chapter proposals — A Cloud in a Box: Politics, History, and the Pet Shop Boys Announcement published by Bodie Ashton on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 Type: Call for Publications Date: February 19, 2021 Subject Fields: Cultural History / Studies, Film and Film History, Music and Music History, Popular Culture Studies, Theatre & Performance History / Studies “Politicians are a bit pathetic. There’s no two ways about that.” — Neil Tennant. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN the Pet Shop Boys and the political has always been one of contention. In their four decades (and counting) of pop music, the duo—Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—have amassed a large discography, not to mention film scores, movie productions, and their own stage shows. In the process, they have often thrown a critical light on what they see as the great hypocrisies of music and stardom. ‘I don’t really like the idea of people projecting themselves as being important humanitarian figures, which is the tendency for rock personalities nowadays’, Tennant once told journalists, in reference to Bono and U2—a reference further explored in the song How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously? on the 1990 album Behaviour. In an interview with Reuters, Tennant elaborated: ‘I don’t want to talk about it. We are musicians, not politicians.’ That being said, there is no doubt that the Pet Shop Boys have shaped their music, their careers, and their very presence through politics, the presentation of memory, and history. Tennant’s background in political history aside, the oeuvre of the group is littered with allusions to historical figures, events, and circumstances, from King Zog of Albania and T.E.
