  • How Vocabulary Size in Two Languages Relates to Efficiency in Spoken Word
    J. Child Lang., Page 1 of 24. f Cambridge University Press 2009 doi:10.1017/S0305000909990055 Printed in the United Kingdom How vocabulary size in two languages relates to efficiency in spoken word recognition by young Spanish–English bilinguals* VIRGINIA A. MARCHMAN, ANNE FERNALD AND NEREYDA HURTADO Stanford University (Received 25 November 2008. Revised 10 April 2009) ABSTRACT Research using online comprehension measures with monolingual children shows that speed and accuracy of spoken word recognition are correlated with lexical development. Here we examined speech processing efficiency in relation to vocabulary development in bilingual children learning both Spanish and English (n=26;2;6). Between- language associations were weak: vocabulary size in Spanish was uncorrelated with vocabulary in English, and children’s facility in online comprehension in Spanish was unrelated to their facility in English. Instead, efficiency of online processing in one language was significantly related to vocabulary size in that language, after controlling for processing speed and vocabulary size in the other language. These links between efficiency of lexical access and vocabulary knowledge in bilinguals parallel those previously reported for Spanish and English monolinguals, suggesting that children’s ability to abstract information from the input in building a working lexicon relates fundamentally to mechanisms underlying the construction of language. The great majority of studies of early language learning have focused on children growing up in monolingual environments who are learning a single [*] We are grateful to the children and parents who participated in this research, and to the staff of the Ravenswood Clinic, the East Palo Alto Library, East Palo Alto Head Start, and Family Connections of San Mateo County.

  • Politics, History, and the Pet Shop Boys
H-Announce Call for chapter proposals — A Cloud in a Box: Politics, History, and the Pet Shop Boys Announcement published by Bodie Ashton on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 Type: Call for Publications Date: February 19, 2021 Subject Fields: Cultural History / Studies, Film and Film History, Music and Music History, Popular Culture Studies, Theatre & Performance History / Studies “Politicians are a bit pathetic. There’s no two ways about that.” — Neil Tennant. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN the Pet Shop Boys and the political has always been one of contention. In their four decades (and counting) of pop music, the duo—Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—have amassed a large discography, not to mention film scores, movie productions, and their own stage shows. In the process, they have often thrown a critical light on what they see as the great hypocrisies of music and stardom. ‘I don’t really like the idea of people projecting themselves as being important humanitarian figures, which is the tendency for rock personalities nowadays’, Tennant once told journalists, in reference to Bono and U2—a reference further explored in the song How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously? on the 1990 album Behaviour. In an interview with Reuters, Tennant elaborated: ‘I don’t want to talk about it. We are musicians, not politicians.’ That being said, there is no doubt that the Pet Shop Boys have shaped their music, their careers, and their very presence through politics, the presentation of memory, and history. Tennant’s background in political history aside, the oeuvre of the group is littered with allusions to historical figures, events, and circumstances, from King Zog of Albania and T.E.

  • Pet Shop Boys Have Finished Their New Album “Elysium” Which Will Be Released in September on Parlophone
2012-06-13 09:22 CEST PET SHOP BOYS HAVE FINISHED THEIR NEW ALBUM “ELYSIUM” WHICH WILL BE RELEASED IN SEPTEMBER ON PARLOPHONE. Pet Shop Boys recently returned to the UK from Los Angeles where they recorded their brand new studio album “Elysium” for release in September. The album was co-produced by Pet Shop Boys with the young American engineer/producer, Andrew Dawson, who has won three Grammy awards for his work on Kanye West’s albums. Further information on the album, including a confirmed release date, will follow. A single will be released to radio at the beginning of July but right now, to give a taste of the album’s sound, a short film for the album track “Invisible” can be viewed online at www.petshopboys.co.uk or on www.vevo.com. The film was made by renowned Los Angeles artist/film-maker Brian Bress. “Elysium” was recorded earlier this year during the three months Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe spent in Los Angeles. Producer Andrew Dawson recently said: “It was really exciting for me to work with Pet Shop Boys - the breadth of their career has been phenomenal. They both have incredible ideas and I’ve definitely learned a few tricks from them on making records”. Pet Shop Boys said today: “We wanted to make this album in a different environment. Despite frequent visits there we have never made an album in Los Angeles. Working there with Andrew Dawson has enabled us to make a very fresh-sounding album.” Like several tracks on “Elysium”, “Invisible” features backing vocals by veteran singers Oren, Maxine and Julie Waters whose long career spans sessions with The Jackson Five to Adele, and singer/songwriter James Fauntleroy.
