Young Valley-Girl Scores 2Nd Place in Paula Abdul's “Live to Dance”
Young Valley-Girl Scores 2nd Place in Paula Abdul’s “Live to Dance” Written by Nadine Toren Television personality and AZfoothills.com columnist Nadine Toren is scouring the area, finding savvy Valley features, bringing readers “on the scene.” Every day she’ll introduce you to celebrities, athletes, and give you an inside look into local events and hot spots. She'll touch on topical issues, and keep AZ fans posted on all the big talkers around town. At her age, I rocked out to Paula’s “Straight Up,” and knew every word to “Cold-Hearted Snake.” In fact, Abdul’s “Shut up and Dance” cassette was the first tape I ever bought with my allowance. But to 11-year-old Kendall Glover, Paula Abdul is the former “American Idol” judge that gave her a shot at stardom. “I was very nervous because all eyes were on me out there,” said Kendall Glover. All eyes were on Ahwatukee’s little lady as she made it through round after round in Paula Abdul’s hit CBS reality show, “Live to Dance.” The Valley girl recently scored second place in the competition, strutting her stuff as a solo performer. “I danced jazz, funk, and contemporary,” said Glover. Glover discovered the open-call for auditions surfing the web a while back, only dreaming she‘d make it this far. But week after week, America voted, and the tiny dancer kept wowing crowds. She danced her sweet little heart out in front of lights and a live audience, as people from all over the country tuned into the tube, watching as Glover flaunted her talent. -

The couple decided not to keep the baby, and for the first few years of his life, Steve Jobs lived with an adoptive family. There, his adoptive father taught him about electronics and computer chips in their garage. In school, we was often so bored that the teacher had to bribe him to get work done. Regardless of that, the school supervisors believed Steve should start high school when he went into fourth grade, an idea which his parents refused. TOUCHING the EARTH to OUR ANCESTORS Expanded Version By
TOUCHING THE EARTH TO OUR ANCESTORS Expanded Version by the Plum Village Fourfold Sangha In gratitude I bow to this land and to all of the ancestors who made it available. (Bell, all touch the earth). I see that I am whole, protected, and nourished by this land and all of the living beings that have been here and made life easy and possible for me through all their efforts. I see all those known and unknown who have made this country a refuge for people of so many origins and colors, by their talent, perseverance, and love—those who have worked hard to build schools, hospitals, bridges, and roads; to protect human rights; to develop science and technology; and to fight for freedom and social justice. (Bell, all stand up. Take three breaths.) I touch my African American and descendant ancestors, you who were enslaved and brought to this land, who poured your blood, sweat, and tears on this land, whose unrewarded labor helped make this country an economic world power. (Bell, all touch the earth). I am in touch with the crippling violence and inhumanity that my African American ancestors faced every day, the loss of your land, language, culture, family, and freedom, and how you al- ways found ways to resist, to subvert oppression, to maintain your humanity, through soulful singing, prayer, humor, slave revolts, communities of escaped slaves, as well as through political struggle, a strong commitment to education, and economic empowerment. Politics, History, and the Pet Shop Boys
H-Announce Call for chapter proposals — A Cloud in a Box: Politics, History, and the Pet Shop Boys Announcement published by Bodie Ashton on Wednesday, December 2, 2020 Type: Call for Publications Date: February 19, 2021 Subject Fields: Cultural History / Studies, Film and Film History, Music and Music History, Popular Culture Studies, Theatre & Performance History / Studies “Politicians are a bit pathetic. There’s no two ways about that.” — Neil Tennant. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN the Pet Shop Boys and the political has always been one of contention. In their four decades (and counting) of pop music, the duo—Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe—have amassed a large discography, not to mention film scores, movie productions, and their own stage shows. In the process, they have often thrown a critical light on what they see as the great hypocrisies of music and stardom. ‘I don’t really like the idea of people projecting themselves as being important humanitarian figures, which is the tendency for rock personalities nowadays’, Tennant once told journalists, in reference to Bono and U2—a reference further explored in the song How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously? on the 1990 album Behaviour. In an interview with Reuters, Tennant elaborated: ‘I don’t want to talk about it. We are musicians, not politicians.’ That being said, there is no doubt that the Pet Shop Boys have shaped their music, their careers, and their very presence through politics, the presentation of memory, and history. Tennant’s background in political history aside, the oeuvre of the group is littered with allusions to historical figures, events, and circumstances, from King Zog of Albania and T.E.
