Rouse and M.A. Rouse ntil quite late in the Middle Ages, virtually everyone who learned to write U did so on a wax tablet; and virtually everyone who made a draft, of letter or lyric, treatise or document, did so on a wax tablet. It is only to be expected, then, that Latin, the written language of the West during most of those centu- ries, would have a basic set of technical terms dealing with writing on wax tablets-the physical implements and appurtenances, and the processes of their employment. An unusually large proportion of the vocabulary associated with wax tablets is, however, figurative, even fanciful. Therefore, we have attempted here, not always successfully, to distinguish the descriptive, prosaic vocabulary from the metaphorical. " 1 One also on occasion sees such variants as tabula cerea ("waxen tablet"): The ninth-century Life of St. Maclov- ius, in recording with what precocity he learned, says that his master wrote the alphabet for him "in a waxen tablet," "in tabula cerea." 2 The fifth-century Bishop Hilary of Arles employs a lengthy circumlocution, when he speaks of writing "on tablets that have been spread with wax, as the custom is" ("in tabulis ut assolet ceraillitis")3-an expression still used in the twelfth century, by Ordericus Vitalis (tabulaecera illitae).4 More frequently than phrases, however, a part stands for the whole: Tabula, tabella, and tabellula, "tablet," were and are commonplace. Wax Tablet 13 and patristic writings, it was also commonplace to use the other "part," cera, or most often the plural cerae, "wax," to mean wax tablet. Thus, Quintilian, saying that wax tablets should not be unduly large: "ne latas quidem ultra modum esse ceras";5 or Jerome, saying he has filled his tablet: "excipientes iam implevimus ceras";6 or Isidore, whose chapter on tablets in the Etymologies (lib. 6 ca. 9) is called simply De ceris;and so on. Even the diminutive is used, ceraculum, as in the Life of St. Mochtei who was taught his letters by an angel of the Lord who brought a wax tablet, "allato angelus Domini ceraculo, eum litterarum docuit elementa. " 7 A special name, pugillaris or more frequently the plural pugillares, was given to small hand-held tablets in antiquity; and in the Middle Ages one has, for example, the rubric in St. Gall MS 242, De pugillarihus, id est parvis tah- ulis. (Most tablets were not "held in the hand," but instead they were intended to be balanced on the right thigh while one wrote: "tabellas ... quibus scholas- tici dextro femore solent uti," tablets which students customarily used on the right thigh, says the Life of Odo of Cluny. )8 A final instance of "part standing for the whole" brings us to the boundary of figurative language. Buxus is the box-tree, huxum is boxwood. Jerome uses huxum in the Vulgate to mean a wooden tablet: "Now go, and write it upon boxwood" ("Nunc ergo ingressus scribe ei super buxum," Isaiah 30.8), and he explains in his commentary on this passage that boxwood was used to write on because it was more durable, less liable to decay, than other woods. 9 In Roman antiquity, however, writers had used huxum to mean wax tablets; Propertius implies that boxwood was in fact the standard backing for wax tablets, when he contrasts fancy tablets decorated with gold to his own which are "made of com- mon boxwood and dirty wax" ("vulgari buxo sordida cera fuit," 3.23.8). 10 The scholia to Horace's Satirae (1.6. 74) explains that a tablet is a huxum in which writ- ing is learned. Centuries later, when the Carolingian scholar Rabanus sent a dip- tych to his aged mentor Samuel, the accompanying verse again closely associates huxum with the tablets themselves: "The [pale] boxwood signifies white-headed age, and the fact that it is closed represents the secret counsel of your heart" ("Buxus canitiem signat, claustrumque secretum consilium cordis"). 11 This raises an intriguing possibility concerning the English word "book" which, unlike the various Romance words derived from the Latin liher, is said by lexi- cographers to come-perhaps-from the Anglo-Saxon hoc, "beech," because- perhaps-the early Germanic tribes carved runes in beechwood tablets. We should think, rather, that the English "book" (attested before the twelfth cen- tury) was in fact reinforced from both language bases, the Latin huxum and the Anglo-Saxon hoc, which-though they mean two different sorts of trees-are trees whose wood is associated with writing, in two different cultures that nur- tured the English language. The Romans routinely referred to polyptychs as codices,as, for example, Quintilian when he says that the vice of prolixity, encouraged by too-large tablets, can be subdued by changing the tablets, "idque vitium . mutatis codicibus esse sublatum. " 12 Rather than use specialized nomenclature, codex, diptychon, etc., the Middle Ages usually just described the size of the multiple tablets: for example, a source may use the expression bina tabula, "double tablet"-Charlemagne's chancellor Erkenbald perpetually equipped his hand with a diptych, "armat bina tabella manum. " 13 Or sources say duae tabulae, which normally means "two tablets [fastened together]"; the Life of Odo of Cluny in fact describes a diptych in detail without ever using the word, picturing him as "carrying in his hand two tablets connected by a fastening, able to be opened up without being separated" ("duas ... tabellasmanu bajulans ... fabrili opere ita connexas, ut possent patefieri, non tamen disjungi"). 14 Some- times it is specified that the diptychs are ivory, either survivors from or emula- tions of Roman consular diptychs: in the twelfth century, Bishop Heinrich of Olmiiutz sent an ivory diptych to Abbot Gottschalk of Selau as a token of respect, "binas ex ebore tabellulas . misit ... in signum et memoriale sincer- issimae amicitiae. " 15 The most complex of which we have record is the eight- part tablet, a special gift, celebrated in verse by the eleventh-century French poet Baudry, "you [=his polyptych] contain eight tablets" ("in vobis ... sunt octo tabelle"). 16 Occasionally the specific Greco-Latin term (polyptych, diptych, etc.) was used, with perhaps surprising results. Thus, when the Ps.-Boethian (s. XII- Imed) De disciplinascolarium repeats (ca. 4) the standard recommendation that a student should always keep a wax tablet-in this case, a diptych-close by his side, "dipticas [var. dicticas] semper lateri suo ha beat," a commentator glosses this by saying that "dictica" is a multiform tablet, so-called because it is suitable for "dictatores" ("dictica est multiformis tabula, dictatoribus apta")-those who com pose and/or those who dictate.

At the end of this term I have taught twice a class called ‘Gospels, Graffiti, Grocery Lists: Writing Culture an its Material Evidence in Antiquity and the Middle Ages’ as a mandatory elective class on ‘Written Culture’ for our Cultural Heritage Program. After teaching the class for the first time last year, I encountered the problem that certain notions in scholarship about advantages or disadvantages of the writing materials used, were partially inconsistent or contradictory, and made me curious to understand better the material evidence for myself – and thereby also to teach students from first-hand knowledge. As a very few specialized shops do offer ancient and medieval writing material, I saw the chance to revive ancient and medieval writing techniques to experiment with my students together in order to understand how writing worked in different cultures and at different times. For obvious reasons, inscriptions on stones as well as on/in clay had to be excluded but writing on wood, wax, papyri and parchment with stylus (on wax), reed (on papyri), reed pen (wood) and quill (on parchment) with three different inks was a full success! Wax tablets were the ‘notebooks’ of the ancient world, and students were easily able to write texts with a metal ‘stylus’ on the wax tablets.

LEIGHTON Mary and the Catholic Church in England, 1854–1893 The article offers description of the Marianism of the English Catholic Church — in particular as manifested in the celebration of the definition of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 and the solemn consecration of England to the Virgin in 1893 — in order to comment on the community’s (and more particularly, its leadership’s) changing perception of its identity and situation over the course of the later nineteenth century. In doing so, it places particular emphasis on the presence of apocalyptic belief, reflective and supportive of a profound alienation from con- temporary English society, which was fundamental in shaping the Catholic body’s modern history. Introduction Frederick Faber, perhaps the most important of the writers to whom one should turn in attempting to grasp more than an exterior view of English Catholicism in the Victorian era, was constantly anxious to remind his audiences that Marian doctrine and devotion were fundamental and integral to Catholicism. As such, the Mother of God was necessarily to be found “everywhere and in everything” among Catholics. Non-Catholics, he noted, were disturbed to find her introduced in the most “awkward and unexpected” places.1 Faber’s asser- tion, it might be remarked, seems to be extensively supported by the writings of present-day historians. We need look no further than to writings on a sub-theme of the history of Marianism — that of apparitions — and to the period spoken of in the present article to make the point.

The crucifixion has got a habitual symbol of Christianity and various types of the Crucifix became a distinctive feature of some Christian faiths. From time to time modern Christians, looking at the Cross with crucified Jesus Christ, don’t think of the tragedy of Christ’s death and the joy of His resurrection but whether the given Crucifix is «their own» or «another's». Meanwhile, the iconography of the Crucifix as far as the iconography of God’s Mother can testify to a generality of Christian tradition of the East and the West. There are much more general lines than differences between them. The evangelical narration of God sufferings and the history of Crucifix iconography formation, both of these, testify to the unity of east and western tradition of the image of the Crucifixion. Traditions of the East and the West had one source and were in constant interaction. Considering the Crucifix iconography of the East and the West in a context of the evangelical narration and in a historical context testifies to the unity of these traditions and leads not to dissociation, conflicts and mutual recriminations, but gives an impulse to search of the lost unity.

    THE GOLD PLATES AND ANCIENT METAL EPIGRAPHY Ryan Thomas Richard Bushman has called the gold plates story “the single most trouble- some item in Joseph Smith’s history.”1 Smith famously claimed to have discovered, with the help of an angel, anciently engraved gold plates buried in a hill near his home in New York from which he translated the sacred text of the Book of Mormon. Not only a source of new scripture comparable to the Bible, the plates were also a tangible artifact, which he allowed a small circle of believers to touch and handle before they were taken back into the custody of the angel. The story is fantastical and otherworldly and has sparked both devotion and skepticism as well as widely varying assessments among historians. Critical and non-believing historians have tended to assume that the presentation of material plates shows that Smith was actively engaged in religious deceit of one form or another,2 while Latter-day Saint historians have been inclined to take Smith and the traditional narrative at face value. For example, Bushman writes, “Since the people who knew Joseph best treat the plates as fact, a skeptical analysis lacks evidence. A series of surmises replaces a documented narrative.”3 Recently, Anne Taves has articulated a middle way between these positions by suggesting that 1.     Vestments are more than just clothes for the pope Sunday, April 13, 2008 BY DAVID GIBSON During Pope Benedict XVI's visit this week, the first since his election three years ago, Catholics will listen intently to what he says, and how he says it, all in hopes of figuring out if Joseph Ratzinger has indeed become a kindly German shepherd or whether he remains God's Rottweiler, one of the many monikers he earned during a long tenure as the Vatican's doctrinal watchdog. Yet as important as Benedict's words will be in introducing the pope to an American audience that knows little about him, it may be just as important to check out what he's wearing. No, not the red Prada shoes that set tongues wag ging early on in his pontificate. (Besides, the designer kicks were apparently knockoffs by the papal cobbler.) Of greater import than Benedict's shoes or his sunglasses (rumored to be Serengetis by Bushnell) will be his choice of liturgical vestments and other papal accouterments, choices that speak volumes not only about his personal tastes but also about his vision of the church's future and its past. With increasing regularity, Benedict has been reintroducing elaborate lace garments and monarchical regalia that have not been seen around Rome in decades, even centuries. He has presided at mass using the wide cope (a cape so ample it is held up by two attendants) and high mitre of Pius IX, a 19th-century pope known for his dim views of the modern world, and on Ash Wednesday he wore a chasuble modeled on one worn by Paul V, a Borghese pope of the 17th century remembered for censuring Galileo.
