2 February 2013 The Tablet Sixteen years of service to the Oamaru Holy Shop Following morning Mass on Friday 30th November 2012, those attending were invited by Father Wayne Healey to stay and enjoy a cup of tea while a special and sincere thank you was said to Michael and Florence Quigley for their services to the Holy Shop over some 16 years. Father Wayne also mentioned the support the parish as a whole has received from the Quigleys. Parish Council Chair Nicola Mountain thanked the couple and presented them with a gift in appreciation of all they’ve done. It being the Feast Day of St Andrew, Patron Saint of , Michael was resplend- ent in his Black Watch kilt. He replied to Father and Nicola Mountain and showed a picture of when the building now used for the shop was up for sale (with a reflec- tion of the cross on the building). He also thanked and paid tribute to the many parishioners who have done duty in the shop over the years. “Without their input,” said Michael, “it would not have been possible for the shop to succeed.” He noted that it was not only Catholics who visited and made purchases from the Shop. It provided a needed service valued by the wider community. The couple were wished well by everyone.

10 February 2013 The Tablet Thoughts of a teacher School move - When the dream becomes a reality… About 5 or 6 years ago I remember Father Gerard Aynsley talk- ing about a master plan to relocate our school onto the beau- tiful open green space across the road on the church grounds. This seemed a dream but sounded MAGIC. I remember seeing the plans at the back of the church with a glass atrium at the centre and the classes linking off this… I remember wonder- ing if it would happen in my time at St Mary’s. For months it was rumoured to be a possibility, then nothing more was heard for years. Last year the rumours resurfaced and the local gossip had the school on the market to a supermarket conglomerate with a move in the foreseeable future. Plans were floating again and it looked to be all back on. The rumoured plans were amazing with a modern learning envi- ronment design placing classrooms opening onto a collabo- rative learning corridor…

On Saturday 24 November 2012, the Gore Parish hosted an Advent-themed event at St Peter’s Hos- tel bringing together 26 children with parents and caregivers. Gathering at St Peter’s Hostel, families eagerly participated in a range of activities to learn about the meaning of Advent, the Advent Wreath, God’s message for Mary at the Annunciation, Prayer in Advent, John the Baptist and his message of caring for others. Pivotal to the success once again was the continued involvement of both adult leaders from the Gore Parish community and senior student assistants from St Peter’s. Fr Vaughan Hook skilfully complemented the Advent theme with well-chosen songs for all to join in both in a sing-along Buying or Selling? and during the spiritually uplifting Mass celebrated by Fr Call me today for a Damian Wynn-Williams, Parish Priest.
