SCORA Department of Botany and Plant Sciences University of California Riverside, CA 92521 ABSTRACT.-Papyrus (Cyperus papyrus, Cyperaceae) was a multi-use plant in ancient Egypt. Its main use, however, was for the production of laminated leaves which served as writing material in the Mediterranean world for almost 5000 years. Being a royal monopoly, the manufacturing process was kept secret. PI~us Secundus, who first described this process, is unclear as to the adhesive forces bonding the individual papyrus strips together. Various authors of the past century advanced their own interpretation on bonding. The present authors believe that the natural juices of the papyrus strip are sufficient to bond the individual strips into a sheet, and that any additional paste used was for the sole purpose of pasting the individual dried papyrus sheets into a scroll. RESUMEN.-EI papiro (Cyperus papyrus, Cyperaceae) fue una planta de uso multiple en el antiguo Egipto. Su uso principal era la produccion de hojas lami nadas que sirvieron como material de escritura en el mundo meditarraneo durante casi 5000 anos. Siendo un monopolio real, el proceso de manufactura se mantema en secreto. Plinius Secundus, quien describio este proceso por primera vez, no deja claro que fuerzas adhesivas mantenlan unidas las tiras individuales de papiro. Diversos autores del siglo pasado propusieron sus propias interpretaciones respecto a la adhesion. Mark Ashurst-McGee Over the last two decades, historians have reconsidered the origins of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the context of the early American tradition of treasure hunting. Well into the nineteenth century there were European Americans hunting for buried wealth. Some believed in treasures that were protected by magic spells or guarded by preternatural beings. Joseph Smith, founding prophet of the Church, had participated in several treasure-hunting expeditions in his youth. The church that he later founded rested to a great degree on his claim that an angel named Moroni had appeared to him in 1823 and showed him the location of an ancient scriptural record akin to the Bible, which was inscribed on metal tablets that looked like gold. After four years, Moroni allowed Smith to recover these “golden plates” and translate their characters into English. It was from Smith’s published translation—the Book of Mormon—that members of the fledgling church became known as “Mormons.” For historians of Mormonism who have treated the golden plates as treasure, Moroni has become a treasure guardian. In this essay, I argue for the historical validity of the traditional understanding of Moroni as an angel. In May of 1985, a letter to the editor of the Salt Lake Tribune posed this question: “In keeping with the true spirit (no pun intended) of historical facts, should not the angel Moroni atop the Mormon Temple be replaced with a white salamander?”1 Of course, the pun was intended. -

New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Using arguments found in a recent anti-Mormon critique by Luke Wilson as a foundation, this article analyzes difficulties of recon- structing ancient geographies, problems with the dis- continuity of Mesoamerican toponyms, the historical development of the idea of a limited geography model, and challenges of textual and artifactual interpretation when trying to relate the Book of Mormon to archaeo- logical remains. -

A 4-point Likert-scale questionnaire was used as the instrument. A trial test was conducted and tested for reliability and a value of 0.75 was obtained from the test. The instrument was further subjected to face validation. The population comprised of 1553 language teachers – English, Literature, Igbo and French and out of this number 240 teachers were selected using simple random sampling technique and it was done to reflect male and female teachers – 120 males and 120 females. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while Analysis of Covariance ANCOVA was used to test the hypothesis at an alpha level 0.05 of significance. Result obtained from the data indicated that (1) Most material teaching aids are not available in schools (2) teaching of essay writing requires application of effective material teaching aids. -

Just as hastily Robert published the correspondence in his New York City newspaper, the Free Enquirer, not knowing that he would receive another, longer letter from William within days, just in time to be included in his weekly’s next run. What proved to be so pressing was what William had discovered onboard the canal boat: “I have met,” he announced dramatically, “with the famous ‘Book of Mormon.’”1 Published in 1830, the Book of Mormon claimed to be nothing short of scripture, an account of America’s ancient inhabitants (themselves a scattered Hebrew remnant) and God’s dealings with them over a long and bloody history. -

At the end of this term I have taught twice a class called ‘Gospels, Graffiti, Grocery Lists: Writing Culture an its Material Evidence in Antiquity and the Middle Ages’ as a mandatory elective class on ‘Written Culture’ for our Cultural Heritage Program. After teaching the class for the first time last year, I encountered the problem that certain notions in scholarship about advantages or disadvantages of the writing materials used, were partially inconsistent or contradictory, and made me curious to understand better the material evidence for myself – and thereby also to teach students from first-hand knowledge. As a very few specialized shops do offer ancient and medieval writing material, I saw the chance to revive ancient and medieval writing techniques to experiment with my students together in order to understand how writing worked in different cultures and at different times. For obvious reasons, inscriptions on stones as well as on/in clay had to be excluded but writing on wood, wax, papyri and parchment with stylus (on wax), reed (on papyri), reed pen (wood) and quill (on parchment) with three different inks was a full success! Wax tablets were the ‘notebooks’ of the ancient world, and students were easily able to write texts with a metal ‘stylus’ on the wax tablets. -

Naso 2017 Delivered by Rabbi Aaron Krupnick 6/3/17 Just a few moments ago we heard a quote from this week's Torah portion, Naso. We blessed the Dias family with Priestly Blessing, "The Yivarechecha," although since it is the blessing of the Kohanim, perhaps it would have been more appropriate, Alan, for you to bless us since you yourself are a Kohen. It is in this week's Torah portion that we read, "The Lord said to Moses, "Tell Aaron and his sons, 'Thus shall you bless the Israelites. Say to them: "May Lord bless you and protect you; May the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.' (Num. 6:23-27) This is among the most ancient of all prayer texts we have in our sacred tradition, and one of the most familiar. It is very, very old: It was used by the Priests/Kohanim in the Temple; both Temples in fact. And it is used to this very day, not just for b'nai mitzvah, but as a blessing for many sacred Jewish occasions. We recite it over our children each and every Friday night. It is especially beautiful and poignant when it is said to the bride and groom under the chuppah. It is such a simple and beautiful blessing. The Birkhat Kohanim is the oldest biblical text extant, way older in fact than the Dead Sea Scrolls. In 1979, the archeologist Gabriel Barkay was examining ancient burial caves at Ketef Hinnom, outside the walls of Jerusalem when a thirteen-year-old boy who was assisting Barkay discovered a hidden chamber. -
