There are also peach stones embossed with the letter ‘e’ to give a clue to the provider (Sir John). The pulpit (seen below on the left) is late C17 and was donated by Sir Percyvall Hart III. We tend to consider Christianity in England as starting from the time of St Augustine’s arrival in 597 but the religion was of course practised by many of our Roman ‘ancestors’ before it went out of fashion when they departed at the end of C4. The first recorded place of Christian worship in Lullingstone was a ‘House-church’ within the Roman villa (which is just down the road). It dates from A.D. 385. This area has been a centre of Christianity for more years than most. 3 Turning to look back at the western end of the nave you can see the font on the south wall, the beautiful moulded ceilings (c. 1723) and the black and white floor tiles and oaken pews (the wood was locally-sourced from the Lullingstone estate) of even date. Passing through the rood screen into the chancel, to your right is the 1581 tomb of Sir Percyvall (I) and Lady Hart. Turning one’s back on the tomb one sees, on the western wall of the chapel, a complex heraldic (c. 1740) memorial to Sir Percyvall Hart-Dyke (IV), the provider of the ceilings, the font and the porch etc. On the north wall is a mural tablet memorial to Anne Dyke (née Hart) who died in 1763. Turning away from this you are looking across the tomb of Sir John Peché (1473-1521) into the C16 North Chapel. This was built on to the church with the specific view of housing his body. Stained glass windows. Many of the stained glass windows are of importance due to their early provenance. Signature: ……………………………………………………………………………… Abstract Medieval castle slighting is the phenomenon in which a high-status fortification is demolished in a time of conflict. At its heart are issues about symbolism, the role of castles in medieval society, and the politics of power. Although examples can be found throughout the Middle Ages (1066–1500) in England, Wales and Scotland there has been no systematic study of the archaeology of castle slighting. Understanding castle slighting enhances our view of medieval society and how it responded to power struggles. This study interrogates the archaeological record to establish the nature of castle slighting: establishing how prevalent it was chronologically and geographically; which parts of castles were most likely to be slighted and why this is significant; the effects on the immediate landscape; and the wider role of destruction in medieval society. The contribution of archaeology is especially important as contemporary records give little information about this phenomenon. Using information recovered from excavation and survey allows this thesis to challenge existing narratives about slighting, especially with reference to the civil war between Stephen and Matilda (1139–1154) and the view that slighting was primarily to prevent an enemy from using a fortification.

This paper reviews the early history of the castle in the light of these results. The castle stands beside the River Darenth, in the village of Eynsford, approximately eleven miles north of Sevenoaks, Kent. It incorporates the remains of a hall, kitchen and other domestic buildings enclosed by a substantial curtain wall and surrounded by a shallow moat (Fig. 1). There is no mention of a castle at Eynsford in Domesday, but it has been suggested, on other historical grounds, that the castle was built between 1085 and 1087 (Rigold 1971, 112). Perhaps built by William de Eynsford I, son of Ralf Unspac, the first Norman tenant of the Archbishop of Canterbury, from whom tenure was held, the castle passed in unbroken male succession until 1231 when the male line died out. In 1261, the tenurial claims of different heirs were settled and from that time the castle ceased to be used as a domestic residence. In 1312, local animosity to a new owner, Judge William Inge, resulted in the looting and vandalising of the castle buildings. Subsequently allowed to fall into decay, the castle was effectively abandoned until the eighteenth century when kennels were built. In 1872, as a result of centuries of neglect, the north-west section of the curtain wall collapsed.

Johnson, • CONFERENCES Fourth Annual Conference: Castles in Ulster The conference, attended by about thirty enthusiasts, was based at the Queen's University of Belfast and held from the 5th to 8th of April, 1990. The emphasis of the programme was on site visits rather than lectures, though on the first evening, Tom McNeill opened the proceedings with an illustrated lecture on the castles of Northern Ireland. Thanks are due to Dr. McNeill for organizing a very successful event, which has also been reported in Ulster Archaeological Society's Newsletter for May 1990.

All these sites were within the city and brief reports on them appear below. As well as this the Trust has been keeping an eye on the topsoil stripping for the Canterbury Bypass (see also below) and observing and recording many other sites and upstanding buildings, which were developed or restored during the year. Three other important areas of small excavations during the year were in the 'Poor Priests' Hospital, in the cellar of 35 St. Margaret's Street and on three small sites in or beside the Cathedral. Brief reports on these sites also appear below. Finally a full report has been completed by Paul Blockley (to be published in the next volume) on his observations and records of part of the cemetery of St. Gregory's Priory, which was exposed during the year. As well as this the Trust has continued its work on recording buildings and a complete survey has been made of 'Meister Omers' in conjunction with the Linacre Garden excavations. This magnificent early fifteenth-century b u i l d i n g had never been studied in detail before and many very important features have been found. Records have also been made of all surviving fragments of the early thirteenth-century great hall and porch of the Archbishop's Palace.
