1. Welcome to IAIR 2015 Bergen!!! Conference Chair’s welcome

It is my greatest pleasure to welcome you the 9th Biennial Conference of IAIR. This conference has been designed with several goals in mind: share your ideas, learn from each other and develop networks for collaboration. But, by all means catch-up with old colleagues and make new ones during the conference!

The theme for this conference “Realizing the potential of cultural diversity” was inspired by the sad events of July 22, 2011, when over 70 innocent people were massacred in the name of fighting multiculturalism in Europe. The news was just breaking when my plane landed in Singapore for the Academy’s 7th Biennial Congress. The horrors of the events shattered my view of Norway as a peaceful harmonious society. As an intercultural relations researcher, I could clearly see how cultural diversity can be misconstrued and lead to such atrocities. Thus, I strongly embraced the idea of hosting such a conference in Norway, to show the world that cultural diversity has a lot to offer societies. It is my hope that as we deliberate, share ideas and research findings about cultural diversity these discussions can readily be translated into positive actions!

Beyond the conference, I hope you will use the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the city: take a hike up one of the several mountains surrounding the city; take a boat ride to see the fjords. Even if you are unable to go up the mountain, the conference banquet to be held on Mount Fløien will offer you a panoramic view of the city. The Reception hosted by the City in the 750+ year old Håkon’s Hall, a Royal residence and a banqueting hall will usher you to the long history of this city. Relax and enjoy them!

I want to use this opportunity to thank IAIR, UiB and all the people who have worked hard to put together this conference. My biggest thanks are all of you, the delegates. I know you have made investments of time, energy and funds to join us here this week. Thank you for coming. We look forward to getting to know you better, and doing all we can to make this a great experience.

Welcome to Bergen, and to the conference

IAIR President’s welcome

I am very happy to welcome all of you old -timers, first -timers, and everyone in -between to our Academy’s 9th biennial conference in the beautiful Nordic city of Bergen!

Professor David Sam and his team have worked tirelessly to get the conference ready and its numerous details worked out for us. Many other Academy members have worked behind the scene to support David’s efforts. They include members of the Executive Council assisting in logistical matters and members of the Scientific Committee who have completed three rounds of proposal reviews, along with the committee chairs and members in charge of selecting recipients of the awards to be given out during this conference. I am grateful to all of these volunteers for their important contributions to the Academy.

Because we are a small organization by design, our biennial conferences offer uniquely rich opportunities to share our ideas and insights in an intimate setting. Along with regular paper sessions, poster sessions, and thematic symposia, we have featured keynote lectures by distinguished scholars and presentations by our award winners. Also, fellows and full members who have registered for the Fellows Day Workshop can look forward to participating in what promises to be a day of stimulating and in -depth discussions.

We will have ample time for warm interpersonal connections, as well. There are exciting social events organized for us, such as a welcome reception hosted by the City of Bergen on Monday evening, an optional local sightseeing excursion on Wednesday afternoon, followed by a conference dinner that evening. We will have many other opportunities to enjoy each other’s company during coffee/tea breaks and over breakfasts and lunches, and even dinner.

I dearly look forward to seeing you all in Bergen. Please come to be inspired and ready to do all you can to help make this conference a truly great one!

Young Yun Kim , PhD Professor University of Oklahoma, USA President of IAIR

Welcome note from the Mayor of Bergen

It`s with great pleasure we welcome the 9th Biennial Congress of the International Academy to the City of Bergen. Bergen has a long tradition in hosting congresses. The inhabitants of Bergen are open-minded and we will always try to include our guests in the best way we know. We are extremely proud of our city, and we want our guests to feel that pride when they walk around in squares and streets. Bergen is the birthplace of Edvard Grieg the famous composer and Ole Bull, the writer Ludwig Holberg was also born here. You can still imagine what the city must have looked like in those days. In our century we are a modern city, with 35 000 students in both UiB and other educational institutions. This brings thousands of students to Bergen every year. We have oil and gas companies located here, and we are an important contributor to the energy sector. Bergen is also a large maritime region as well as an interesting tourist destination. As you can see we have a lot of things to offer our visitors, so welcome to Bergen in 2015. I sincerely hope you will enjoy your stay.

Trude H. Drevland Mayor, City of Bergen

Welcome Note from the Daen of the Faculty of Psychology

As the Dean of the Faculty of Psychology, I am pleased to welcome you to the 9th Biennial Congress of the International Academy for Intercultural Research hosted by the Department of Psychosocial Science, Faculty of Psychology. The research and teaching activities of the Faculty, and the Department in particular cut across the conference theme: “Realizing the potential of cultural Diversity”. The University of Bergen is therefore the right place for the conference. Though our research activities mainly have a psychological perspective, this welcome is to researchers from a variety of disciplines including, social sciences, humanities, education and health, as well as commerce, and beyond, thus reflecting our values of multidisciplinary approach to issues. Both experienced and beginning researchers are encouraged to participate as we continue to explore the challenges and the potential cultural diversity offers to contemporary societies and workplaces. On behalf of the Faculty of Psychology and the planning committee, I heartily welcome you to the conference and to Bergen!

I am proud that our Department is hosting this important scientific event, and I hope you will be able to participate in eye-opening conceptual and methodological discussions that will follow you in the years to come. Welcome note from the head of society and workplace diversity research group

As the leader of the Workplace and Society Diversity Research Group, it is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you to Bergen and to the 9th Biennial Congress of the International Academy for Intercultural Research. We are delighted to host this conference with the theme “Realizing the potential of cultural diversity”, where the emphasis is on positive and optimistic focus that embraces the resources that cultural differences can present to societies. Political decision-making, workplaces, classroom and neighborhoods are just a few of the many areas where cultural diversity may bring benefits as well as challenges. Hosting this conference here at the University of Bergen is valuable to us. Similar to many other countries, the Norwegian population has undergone great changes over the last years in the direction of increased cultural diversity. Intercultural knowledge and research is more important than ever before. My wish is that the Bergen-venue will contribute to broaden our perspectives. Hence, I invite all participants to actively take part in our congress and share your knowledge and your ideas in all the subfields of the congress. And last, but not least, enjoy our beautiful city, stimulating conversations, and make new friends and contacts.

Gro Mjeldheim Sandal , PhD Professor Head of Society and Workplace diversity Research Group
