Indeed, interdisciplinarity is at the core of our Academy’s identity, and is reflected in the multiple social science disciplines and applied areas of theory, research, and practice represented in our membership. What is, then, interdisciplinary scholarship we seek to foster? How is interdisciplinary scholarship to be differentiated from multidisciplinary and disciplinary approaches to understanding and explaining intercultural phenomena? Reflecting on these questions, I take a close look at the nature of interdisciplinary scholarship, identify its key characteristics, and illustrate them through a survey of differing perspectives and knowledge claims made about some of the issues of interest among our Academy members, such as cultural identity and acculturation/adaptation. 10:45 am – 11:30am/ Key Note Lecture 1 Chair: Mr. Jonas R. Kunst Macro-Micro Interfacing and the Production of Group-Based Social Hierarchy: The Case of Individual Differences in Social Dominance and Institutions Socio-Political Terror Auditorium 1 Dr. Jim Sidanius As an example of attempts to explore the interaction of macro- and micro-levels analysis, social dominance theory argues that the creation, maintenance and re-creation of group based social hierarchy is, among other factors, a result of interacting forces acting at multiple levels of analysis. These levels of analysis include the production and dissemination of system-wide social ideologies and social practices, the hierarchy-enhancing and hierarchy attenuating character of social institutions, the dynamics of social identities and the differential behavioral predispositions of individuals embedded within social institutions. As you may know and certainly will experience, Amsterdam is a city of water, with more than 100 km of canals. Water is therefore the leading theme in the design products of this conference. It stands for transparency, but also for movement, and thereby represents two major aims of Social Psychology in the coming years. EASP keeps attracting a growing number of researchers who want to present their research to colleagues. We received a total of 154 proposals for symposia, 628 proposals for individual talks and 261 proposals for posters, adding up to a total 1043 submissions. Compared with the 960 submissions in Stockholm this is again an increase and makes the composition of an interesting and inspiring scientific program all the more challenging. The program committee has worked with great dedication to achieve this aim. The final program consists of 12 parallel sessions, including 101 symposia and 61 thematic sessions (each consisting of up to 5 individual presentations) and 696 posters that will be presented in 6 different poster sessions. In addition, we will have the traditional round table sessions during lunch break, the award session and the Tajfel lecture, all held in the Aula.

Welcome to IAIR 2015 Bergen!!! Conference Chair’s welcome It is my greatest pleasure to welcome you the 9th Biennial Conference of IAIR. This conference has been designed with several goals in mind: share your ideas, learn from each other and develop networks for collaboration. But, by all means catch-up with old colleagues and make new ones during the conference! The theme for this conference “Realizing the potential of cultural diversity” was inspired by the sad events of July 22, 2011, when over 70 innocent people were massacred in the name of fighting multiculturalism in Europe. The news was just breaking when my plane landed in Singapore for the Academy’s 7th Biennial Congress. The horrors of the events shattered my view of Norway as a peaceful harmonious society. As an intercultural relations researcher, I could clearly see how cultural diversity can be misconstrued and lead to such atrocities. Thus, I strongly embraced the idea of hosting such a conference in Norway, to show the world that cultural diversity has a lot to offer societies. It is my hope that as we deliberate, share ideas and research findings about cultural diversity these discussions can readily be translated into positive actions! Beyond the conference, I hope you will use the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the city: take a hike up one of the several mountains surrounding the city; take a boat ride to see the fjords.

    Tenth Biennial Conference June 25–29, 2017 ABSTRACTS INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY FOR INTERCULTURAL RESEARCH The College of Staten Island is a four-year, senior college of The City University of New York that offers exceptional opportunities to all of its students. Programs in the liberal arts and sciences and professional studies are offered that lead to associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Doctoral degrees are offered at the College or jointly with The Graduate Center of The City University of New York. The College also has an extensive Continuing Education program, offering professional certificate programs. The College of Staten Island traces its roots back to the establishment of Staten Island Community College in 1956 as the Borough’s public institution of higher education of The City University of New York, offering associate’s degrees. In 1967, Richmond College was established by CUNY as a two-year upper-division college to offer baccalaureate and master’s degrees, and participate in doctoral education. Staten Island Community College and Richmond College were merged in 1976 and renamed the College of Staten Island.
