You may have noticed that there hasn’t been any newsletters in 2008. To those of you who have missed them, our apologies... what a year! We’ve had some staff have leave and others come. We now have nine staff in the RFS team giving the equivalent of seven full-time workers. Below is a quick summary of the things we’ve done this past year:

• Visited all mainland capital cities at least once this year • Taken on the sale of Isotopes which has added a new meaning to ‘half-life’ (David and I thought it would halve our lives when we found how much work was involved) • The Singapore Airshow - It was tough work but somebody had to do it (see story on page 3) • Eileen and I took a motorhome from Brisbane to Cairns & visited customers at Bundaberg, Gladstone, Mackay, Townsville, Innisfail and Cairns on the way • Quick trip to Texas which involved 55 hours travelling to spend 66 hours on the ground - That was heavy-going - The Scantech Spider is impressive equipment and we sold our first unit. For more info on the Spider please click here Meet the RFS Team Russell & Eileen Fraser - Directors. Russell is a metallurgist with 25 years of selling to the Heather Lee - Accounts. NDT industry. The Singapore Airshow was held this year from the 19th to 24th February in the Exhibition Centre, Singapore and paraded some of the finest aircrafts in the world, including the , Boeing F-15C Eagle, Bombardier Global Express XRS, Eurocopter EC120. Russell attended the Airshow to work with the team from Lumos Technology Co. Ltd on their Exhibition stand. Not only did the exhibition allow attendees to further penetrate the market with their products, but guests were entertained by static aircraft displays in the airport pavilion, and aerobatic flying displays not to be missed. As well as the Black Knights and Australia’s the fly-by of the world’s largest Passenger plane, the Airbus A380 was impressive. It was something akin to a whale in the sky as it wallowed low overhead. Just for fun the A380 had been transformed into the model on our cover page of a luxury apartment in the sky. Rumour has it that the Sultan of Brunei has ordered one. Demonstrating the Lumos X-Loupe portable microscopic camera was a breeze, with the superior performances of both the A-Series and G-Series offering up to 300x magnification. The Lumos stand was directly opposite the Australian industry stand so we were in good company. For more info on Lumos X-Loupe please click here.

After all, you can take the boy out of the Airshow but you can’t take the Airshow out of the boy.

3 Product Feature Rapid Interest in the Rapidscan 3D Evolving from the Rapidscan 2 Series, Sonatest now introduces the new and unique Rapidscan 3D which has the capability to scan structures quickly and accurately in 3-Dimensions using a co-ordinated measuring arm. The speed and ease of use of this system has revolutionized traditional NDT scanning methods; re- moving the need for both expensive immersion baths and tooling and also reducing the time taken to locate and identify defects and anomalies.

Speed is of the essence….

The Rapidscan 3D offers a complete and integrated ultrasonic scanning system. Large area coverage is possible due to the com- bination of the high resolution ultrasonic arrays used within the Wheelprobe™, powerful Workflows software and the measur- ing arm. Using the measuring arm to inspect parts is intuitive and remarkably efficient. The system is ergonomically designed to follow complex 3D shapes, which greatly reduces inspection time. The inspection of even large areas can now be achieved in a fraction of the time of traditional NDT methods. Accurate results are presented in the form of 3D images of the inspected part. These results can easily be shared and understood even by those without NDT experience.

Understanding in Depth…..

The Rapidscan 3D comes with complete suite of software tools, supplied as standard, enabling the storage of test measure- ments taken in situ. Post-processing and results analysis can be performed off-line or even off-site. Powerful analysis func- tions allow defects to be detected, sized and reported. The Rap- idscan software wizard allows the operator to quickly choose a specific part from a library stored on the instrument. These parts are supplied from a mixture of images based on spe- cific 3D CAD models and parts generated from pre-defined stock objects. The wizard then presents compatible inspection tools for different regions of the test part. The library can be developed for many specific testing applications and environ- ments, providing a selection of different measuring solutions.

We have had interest from a wide range of applications including Aerospace, Automotive, Marine and Composite Manufacturing environments have proved to be very successful, with focus on composite inspection, delamination detection, bond inspection and thickness mapping amongst other areas. 4 Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Symposium by Susan Pile

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Symposium which was held in Melbourne from the 6th to 9th of October. The Symposium was attended by over 810 police and scientists from all over the world. The RFS stand was attended by Russell and Eileen Fraser, Guy Rollins (Microset in the UK) as well as myself. Our stand was in a fantastic position, right next to one of the banquet tables, which enabled just about every delegate the opportunity to see what we could offer them. We displayed a wide range of products from Spectronics’ UV lights to the Lumos X-Loupe Portable Microscopic Camera and Isomark, as well as the many different magnifiers we stock. This meant we could show just about everyone a product which could be of use in their field of work. It was said time and time again that our exhibition stand was one of the most interesting at the Symposium. Our exhibition stand was set out in a manner that invited guests come in and ‘play’ with the toy of their choice. It’s one thing to be shown how a product works, but to be able to use it yourself has a far bigger impact. Our free smiley pens and notepads were also a big hit. We had quite a lot of requests for quotes for just about every product. These quotes have since been sent and we have already seen good results.

Thank you for your support during 2008. It has been our best year ever and we look forward to working with you bigger and better in 2009. For more details on our product range, please go to our website: www.rfsales.com.au or contact us below:
