Asia Bookroom Chinese Posters & Papercuts ASIA BOOKROOM CHINESE POSTERS & PAPERCUTS The communication of the state’s desires to the Chinese people through the arts has a long history. This method of communication reached a high point in late 20th Century China during the Great Leap Forward and most especially during the Cultural Revolution. In fact, as many as 2.2 billion official portraits of Mao alone were published during the Cultural Revolution, an astounding figure particularly when you consider that a great many posters published at this time did not include Mao! In the early days of the People’s Republic posters served several purposes not the least being an effective way of communicating with the many illiterate people in the Chinese population. Additionally, posters offered a form of subliminal“ advertising” as many Chinese people tuned out to the messages, however, with the regular exposure that posters offered, ideas were still effectively transferred. While the messages were ignored by some, they were carefully noted by others. It has been said that given the subtle but regular changes in tone and message, posters were even more useful than newspapers to get a feel for which way the political winds were blowing. (Chinese Propaganda Posters from the Collection of Michael Wolf. – Anchee Min & Stefan R. Landsberger. Taschen 2003). Propaganda posters are a fascinating field of Chinese art and political history that opens up the modern history and culture of China in a special way. For Cultural Revolution material we commend to you the work of Stefan R. Landsberger both in the printed form of his books on the subject and the excellent website he and his colleagues have constructed at www.chineseposters.net which also includes an extensive bibliography. In this catalogue Asia Bookroom offers a collection of posters and associated materials, mainly but not entirely, from the period of the Cultural Revolution. The catalogue is divided into two: the first part listing and illustrating posters, large and small, and associated materials and the second devoted to papercuts, many of which are also large, one might say call them “paper cut posters” in their own right. • Subnational Debt of China: the Politics-Finance Nexus*
Subnational Debt of China: The Politics-Finance Nexus* HAOYU GAO, HONG RU and DRAGON YONGJUN TANG September 12, 2017 Abstract Using comprehensive proprietary loan-level data, we analyze the borrowing and defaults of local governments in China. Contrary to conventional wisdom, policy bank loans to local governments have significantly lower default rates than commercial bank loans with similar characteristics. Policy bank loans are relatively more important for local politician’s career advancement. Distressed local governments often strategically choose to default on loans from commercial banks. This selection is more pronounced after the abrupt ending of the “four trillion” stimulus when China started tightening local government borrowing. Our findings shed light on potential approach to hardening budget constraint for local government. • The Portrayal of Women in Propaganda Posters During the Chinese Cultural Revolution Yu Yang (Sally) Lin (Art)
The Portrayal of Women in Propaganda Posters During the Chinese Cultural Revolution Yu Yang (Sally) Lin (Art) History Supervisor: Mrs. K. Puzio Sir Winston Churchill Secondary 0227 May 2015 ii Abstract China's Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution (19661976) was a ten year sociopolitical movement that not only changed many social aspects of life but drew emphasis to a unique form of art visual propaganda. Cultural Revolution propaganda posters are visually impacting both in terms of colour use and composition, and convey strong political messages and nationalism. Due to these aspects, propaganda posters hold irreplaceable importance in the study of gender equality and the portrayal of women during the Cultural Revolution. The essay aims to analyze the message of the propaganda posters, and to what extent were they effective. The essay is composed of four major components, including historical context, method, analysis and conclusion. 208 posters within the Cultural Revolution time frame were taken from collector websites in the randomized order they appeared. The posters were then analyzed for their portrayal of women in Cultural Revolution propaganda posters with the use of visual analysis, numerical analysis and historical evidence. The analysis found three important connections between the female image and the Cultural Revolution. Firstly, the existence of women in the Cultural Revolution posters was not about gender equality, but to serve the CCP’s socialist ideological campaigns and industrial production needs. Secondly, this political drive behind the messages caused the portrayal of genders to become form of gender neutralization that favoured masculinization. Thirdly, the reduction genders inequality due to traditional confines prompted the loss of social diversity and exposed women to a new form of marginalization, where any aspects of femininity was ostracized.

The Mercurian : : A Theatrical Translation Review Volume 7, Number 3 (Spring 2019) Editor: Adam Versényi Editorial Assistant: Sarah Booker ISSN: 2160-3316 The Mercurian is named for Mercury who, if he had known it, was/is the patron god of theatrical translators, those intrepid souls possessed of eloquence, feats of skill, messengers not between the gods but between cultures, traders in images, nimble and dexterous linguistic thieves. Like the metal mercury, theatrical translators are capable of absorbing other metals, forming amalgams. As in ancient chemistry, the mercurian is one of the five elementary “principles” of which all material substances are compounded, otherwise known as “spirit.” The theatrical translator is sprightly, lively, potentially volatile, sometimes inconstant, witty, an ideal guide or conductor on the road. The Mercurian publishes translations of plays and performance pieces from any language into English. The Mercurian also welcomes theoretical pieces about theatrical translation, rants, manifestos, and position papers pertaining to translation for the theatre, as well as production histories of theatrical translations. Submissions should be sent to: Adam Versényi at [email protected] or by snail mail: Adam Versényi, Department of Dramatic Art, CB# 3230, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3230. For translations of plays or performance pieces, unless the material is in the public domain, please send proof of permission to translate from the playwright or original creator of the piece. Since one of the primary objects of The Mercurian is to move translated pieces into production, no translations of plays or performance pieces will be published unless the translator can certify that he/she has had an opportunity to hear the translation performed in either a reading or another production-oriented venue.
