In a previous investigation, MintPress News explored how one university department, the Department of War Studies at King’s College London, functions as a school for spooks. Its teaching posts are filled with current or former NATO officials, army officers and intelligence operatives to churn out the next generation of spies and intelligence officers. However, we can now reveal an even more troubling product the department produces: journalists. An inordinate number of the world’s most influential reporters, producers and presenters, representing many of the most well-known and respected outlets — including The New York Times, CNN and the BBC — learned their craft in the classrooms of this London department, raising serious questions about the links between the fourth estate and the national security state. It followed an invitation for expressions of interest in the role which closed on 19 September, and to which one body, the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) provided a submission. The consultation, published 19 October 2017, therefore explored the views of respondents on the suitability of HESA to fulfil the role of the DDB, and on the suitability of any other organisation which consultees wished to suggest, but which had not expressed an interest. The responses to this consultation received both digitally and informal written responses are now informing the OfS’s recommendation to the Secretary of State on designating a data body and decision-making and design in relation to its regulatory framework, which will be published by the end of March 2018. 3 Summary of responses received Overall there was overwhelming support for the HESA as a body that is credible and suitable to fulfil the role of the DDB. -

Welcome to the March edition of Slap. I was hoping to say ‘Spring is in the air’ but I’ve just seen the weather forecast and it’s far from Spring-like. It really feels like it’s been a long winter of discontent with news of more venue closures almost weekly. The latest to go at the end of February was the Pig and Drum in Worcester which has been prominent on the local music seen for a few years now. Thanks to the efforts of landlady Rachel Cale bands from out of town loved playing there. We don’t yet know the long term fate of the Boar’s Mar 2017 Head in Kidderminster since Sid & Sandra announced they’re moving on in the summer, But I don’t think it’ll be the last to go. With business rates rises due very soon and so many people feeling the pinch, these places are really suffering. There are SLAP MAGAZINE rumours of other venues around the counties who may also be Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, shutting their doors soon. And It’s not just the music scene that Worcester WR1 2RS suffers either, many of these spaces are now multi functional art Telephone: 01905 26660 spaces as well as platforms for comedy, spoken word and poetry. -
