The Mercator Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning uses the definition for these languages defined by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML): “Regional and minority languages are languages traditionally used within a given territory of a state by nationals of that state who form a group numerically smaller than the rest of the state’s population; they are different from the official language(s) of that state, and they include neither dialects of the official language(s) of the state nor the languages of migrants”. The Mercator Research Centre aims at the acquisition, application and circulation of knowledge about these regional and minority languages in education. An important means to achieve this goal is the Regional Dossiers series: documents that provide the most essential features of the education system of regions with a lesser used regional or minority language. 3 aim The aim of the Regional Dossiers Series is to provide a concise description of European minority languages in education. Aspects that are addressed include features of the education system, recent educational policies, main actors, legal arrangements and support structures, as well as quantitative aspects such as the number of schools, teachers, pupils, and financial investments. Because of this fixed structure the dossiers in the series are easy to compare. target group The dossiers serve several purposes and are relevant for poli- cymakers, researchers, teachers, students and journalists who wish to explore developments in minority language schooling in Europe. They can also serve as a first orientation towards further research, or function as a source of ideas for improving educational provisions in their own region. link with The format of the Regional Dossiers follows the format of Eury- Eurydice dice - the information network on education in Europe - in order Education and lesser used languages to link the regional descriptions with those of national education systems. Eurydice provides information on the administration and structure of national education systems in the member states of the European Union. contents Every Regional Dossier begins with an introduction about the region concerned, followed by six sections that each deals with a specific level of the education system (e.g. primary education). Sections eight and nine cover the main lines of research into education of the concerned minority language, the prospects for the minority language in general and for education in particular. The tenth section gives a summary of statistics. Lists of regulations, publications and useful addresses concerning the minority language, are given at the end of the dossier. 4 The German language in education in South Tyrol (Italy) 1 Introduction language The German language in South Tyrol originates from the settling of the area south of the Alps by Germanic tribes in the 6th century. After the eventful period of the Migration the German language stabilises under the rule of the bishops of Trento and Brixen and later under the counts of Tyrol. In 1363 the last Countess of Tyrol, Margarethe Maultasch, transfers the province to Rudolph IV of Habsburg, Duke of Austria. From that moment, German

  • Apple-Producing Family Farms in South Tyrol: an Agriculture Innovation Case Study
OCCASIONAL PAPERS ON INNOVATION IN FAMILY FARMING Apple production in South Tyrol is a true illustration of a vibrant agricultural innovation system. It is a collaborative and pluralistic structure that comprises private and public actors, different tiers of producer organizations, cooperatives, research, extension and advisory services, all geared towards integrating small-scale apple producers in a highly productive, profitable and efficient system. Today, apple production is a main family farming activity in South Tyrol, practised on a total area of 19 000 ha with an average landholding of 2.5 ha. Up to 95% of the farmers are members of cooperatives. Over 8 000 small-scale producers have joined together in cooperatives that are clustered to form two main producer organizations. Small farmers in South Tyrol currently produce 50%, 15% and 2% of apples on the Italian, European and global markets respectively. APPLE-PRODUCING The cooperative culture, the diversity of services, the multiple actors and their changing roles within the system offer a good opportunity for learning about the dynamics of FAMILY FARMS IN SOUTH TYROL: agricultural innovation. This paper presents the evolution of this agricultural innovation system, and analyses the triggers and the drivers of innovation in the apple production AN AGRICULTURE INNOVATION sector in South Tyrol. The luminous limestone range is the result of geological transformation from ancient sea floor to mountaintop. The region is a landscape of grassy balconies perched above Alpine lakes, and Tyrolean hamlets nestled in lush valleys, crisscrossed by countless hiking and walking trails connecting villages, Alpine refuges, and cable cars. The Dolomites form the frontier between Germanic Northern Europe and the Latin South.

  • Letty T Year 8 German
Differences between German schools and English schools No uniform British pupils often wear shirts and ties to school. However, most German students are allowed to wear their normal clothes. Breakfast break Most of the time, British students eat their breakfast before coming to school. This doesn’t happen in Germany! German pupils eat their breakfast after the first lesson of the day, during a breakfast break. They usually have yoghurt, some fruit and sandwiches. Early starts In the UK, most pupils start school about 8:40 am. However, German schools start much earlier! Most students have to be in their classes by 7.35 am. That means they have to wake up very early on a school day! Students only have to go to primary school for 4 years In the UK, all primary students have got to attend primary school for 7 years but in Germany they only have to go for 4 years, as they start the school system at 6 years old. Facts about German schools Germany have 5 types of secondary school: • Gymnasium A gymnasium is the only type of secondary school, in Germany, that prepares students for university and is probably the most prestigious out of all five schools. They study maths, history, several foreign languages, art design, computer science, and other subjects too. • Realschule This type of secondary school is considered to be less prestigious than Gymnasium. However, it’s more available for children, and about 40 percent of German pupils attend Realschule. • Hauptschule This school is a lot less demanding when it comes to academics.

Map 19 Raetia Compiled by H. Bender, 1997 with the assistance of G. Moosbauer and M. Puhane Introduction The map covers the central Alps at their widest extent, spanning about 160 miles from Cambodunum to Verona. Almost all the notable rivers flow either to the north or east, to the Rhine and Danube respectively, or south to the Po. Only one river, the Aenus (Inn), crosses the entire region from south-west to north-east. A number of large lakes at the foot of the Alps on both its north and south sides played an important role in the development of trade. The climate varies considerably. It ranges from the Mediterranean and temperate to permafrost in the high Alps. On the north side the soil is relatively poor and stony, but in the plain of the R. Padus (Po) there is productive arable land. Under Roman rule, this part of the Alps was opened up by a few central routes, although large numbers of mountain tracks were already in use. The rich mineral and salt deposits, which in prehistoric times had played a major role, became less vital in the Roman period since these resources could now be imported from elsewhere. From a very early stage, however, the Romans showed interest in the high-grade iron from Noricum as well as in Tauern gold; they also appreciated wine and cheese from Raetia, and exploited the timber trade. Ancient geographical sources for the region reflect a growing degree of knowledge, which improves as the Romans advance and consolidate their hold in the north.
