Development in the Leuser region began in the late 1800s whenthe Dutch colonial regime implemented large-scale agriculture and conservation projects in the rural communities. These continued into the 1980s and 1990s as the New Order government continued the work of the colonial regime. The top-down model of development used by the state was heavily criticized, prompting a move towards community-based participatory development in the later 1990s. This thesis examines the most recent NGO-led development project, a micro- hydro electricity system, in the village of Aih Nuso to elucidate the following: 1) The social, economic, and political impacts of the project on the community. -

INTRODUCTION We are two postgraduate students who have just completed the MSc in Science Media Production at Imperial College London. In the summer of 2005, we visited a very remote region of South East Sulawesi in Indonesia to make a documentary film about the Bajo community of Sampela. 2. EXPEDITION AIMS Our original aims were set down in our applications for funding as follows: • To make a documentary film about the Bajo community of Sampela. This will raise awareness in the West of the problematic situation outlined in the proposal. By closely involving the Bajo in the film’s production, we will also give the community the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings and tell their story. • To aid the conservation work carried out in Sulawesi by Operation Wallacea by producing a version of the film in Indonesian and Bajo to raise awareness in Sampela and Kaledupa of the danger that is faced from the collapsing fishery. -

ACIAR Project FIS/2001/079 5. ARTISANAL FISHERIES There is no universal definition of “artisanal fisheries” but common criteria (SEAFDEC 1999) include 1. Small scale and often decentralized operations, 2. A predominance of small vessels (often <10 GT), 3. A predominance of traditional fishing gears (but may include trawl, seine, gill-net, and longline vessels), 4. Fishing trips are generally short and inshore, and 5. The fisheries are often largely subsistence fisheries, but there may be some commercial component. The ports surveyed for the artisanal component of this report only meet these criteria to varying degrees, with some being home to many vessels >10 GT, and with centralized commercial operations. However, for the purposes of this study, “artisanal ports” includes not only the smallest scale of landing place at the fishing village level (i.e. what most readers would consider truly artisanal), but also these larger landing places where fishing vessels are primarily owned by fishing households, but not by fishing companies, and where the majority of vessels are smaller than 25 GT. A summary of key features of the artisanal landing places surveyed are shown in Table 5.0.1. More detailed descriptions are provided in the sections that follow. 5.1 Bungus – Padang, Pariaman, and Painan (West Sumatra) There are 5 provinces on the west coast of Sumatra – from north to south, the provinces of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (formerly Daerah Istimewa Aceh), North Sumatra (Sumatra Utara), West Sumatra (Sumatra Barat), Bengkulu, and Lampung. Numerous islands are located off this coast - Banyak Archipelago islands in the north, Nias Island, Tanahmasa and Tanahbala Islands, the Mentawai Islands (that include Siberut, Sipura and Pagai Islands), and Enggano Island in the south. -

A beautiful picture of the Lord in a 12th century English psalter 1 shows that the rainbow also in Christian conception keeps its place as 'a token of a covenant', for Christ, in that picture, is seated on a rain- bow, with His feet nesting on a smaller bow. Thus we Europeans are acquainted with the rainbow as the bond between heaven and earth through both sources of culture which still nourish our civilisation. It hardly needs emphasizing, that each religion has its own view ofthe rainbow. -

Pendahuluan Indonesia adalah nusa-antara wilayah dengan pulau-pulau besar dan kecil di antara Samudera Hindia dan Samudera Pasifik dengan wilayah darat sebagai rangkaian pegunungan api yang memiliki keragaman geografis dan kaya akan sumber daya alam. Keindahan alam Indonesia memang tiada tara. Sebagai bangsa bahari Indonesia mewarisi taman laut yang menakjubkan, antara lain: Bunaken, Wakatobi, dan Raja Ampat yang menyimpan kekayaan terumbu karang dunia. Di Kawasan Raja Ampat terdapat lebih dari 1.070 jenis spesies ikan, 600 jenis spesies terumbu karang, dan 66 jenis molusca. Selain Kawasan Raja Ampat, Indonesia juga memiliki Laut Sulawesi yang masih penuh misteri, karena ditemukannya ikan Coelacanth yang diduga sudah punah 65 juta tahun yang lalu. Indonesia mewarisi kekayaan pantai yang beragam, pantai dengan pasir putih, pasir coklat, pasir hitam, pantai berpasir pink seperti di Pink Beach Pulau Komodo. -

Smith Centre for Islamic Culture and Society, University of Mataram, Mataram 83125, Indonesia; [email protected] Abstract: This article is a feminist ethnographic exploration of how ‘indigenous’ notions of a ‘sacred feminine’ shape Sufi praxis on the island of Lombok in the eastern part of Indonesia in Southeast Asia. I demonstrate through long-term immersive anthropological fieldwork how in her indigenous form as Dewi Anjani ‘Spirit Queen of Jinn’ and as ‘Holy Saint of Allah’ who rules Lombok from Mount Rinjani, together with a living female saint and Murshida with whom she shares sacred kinship, these feminine beings shape the kind of Sufi praxis that has formed in the largest local Islamic organization in Lombok, Nahdlatul Wathan, and its Sufi order, Hizib Nahdlatul Wathan. Arguments are situated in a Sufi feminist standpoint, revealing how an active integration of indigeneity into understandings of mystical experience gives meaning to the sacred feminine in aspects of Sufi praxis in both complementary and hierarchical ways without challenging Islamic gender constructs that reproduce patriarchal expressions of Sufism and Islam. Indonesia Abstract. The Javanese believe destiny as God's provision that must be obeyed. This article is a textual study that demonstrates how fate is claimed in a manner of textual criticizing the Javanese philosophy. We use a methodological foundation as the structural approach to the theory put forward by Tzevetan Todorov to examine aspects of the Fugitive Wisanggeni text narrative and the semiotic Roland Barthes to read the symbols present as marks in the text. The result of the study shows that the construction of Wisanggeni’s character, as main character of the story, contradicts the concept of narima and rila in the Javanese philosophy. Meanwhile, from the results of semiotic analysis, it was found that, as a sign, narima carries an attitude that will lead to a simple life that does not impose personal will. The rila sign carries a meaning that people who submit to this attitude are of good morals. This is the sign of a person that he as individuals has the freedom to regulate his life. Inversion is performed with 99,741 Brst-arrival p waves from 16,196 local and regional earthquakes occurred around the Sumatra Subduction Zone (SSZ) between 1964 and 2018. Tomographic results show low-velocity (low-V) anomalies that reCect both accretion and possibly, asthenospheric upwelling associated with subduction of the Australian Plate beneath Eurasia around the SSZ. The prominent low-V anomaly is thickest around the Conrad, extending beneath Straits of Malacca and parts of peninsular Malaysia, but disap- pears around the Moho in the region. Below the Moho, the subducting slab, represented by a high-velocity (high-V) anomaly, trends in the orientation of Sumatra. At these depths, the eastern shorelines of Sumatra, most parts of Malacca Strait and the west coast of peninsular Malaysia show varying degrees of positive velocity anomalies. We consider that asthenospheric upwelling around the SSZ may provide heat source for the 40 or more hot springs distributed north–south in peninsular Malaysia.
