Portuguese language in Angola: luso-creoles' missing link? John M. Lipski {presented at annual meeting of the AATSP, San Diego, August 9, 1995} 0. Introduction Portuguese explorers first reached the Congo Basin in the late 15th century, beginning a linguistic and cultural presence that in some regions was to last for 500 years. In other areas of Africa, Portuguese-based creoles rapidly developed, while for several centuries pidginized Portuguese was a major lingua franca for the Atlantic slave trade, and has been implicated in the formation of many Afro- American creoles. The original Portuguese presence in southwestern Africa was confined to limited missionary activity, and to slave trading in coastal depots, but in the late 19th century, Portugal reentered the Congo-Angola region as a colonial power, committed to establishing permanent European settlements in Africa, and to Europeanizing the native African population. In the intervening centuries, Angola and the Portuguese Congo were the source of thousands of slaves sent to the Americas, whose language and culture profoundly influenced Latin American varieties of Portuguese and Spanish. Despite the key position of the Congo-Angola region for Ibero-American linguistic development, little is known of the continuing use of the Portuguese language by Africans in Congo-Angola during most of the five centuries in question. Only in recent years has some attention been directed to the Portuguese language spoken non-natively but extensively in Angola and Mozambique (Gonçalves 1983). In Angola, the urban second-language varieties of Portuguese, especially as spoken in the squatter communities of Luanda, have been referred to as Musseque Portuguese, a name derived from the KiMbundu term used to designate the shantytowns themselves. -

Lionel Bringuier Conductor French conductor Lionel Bringuier is one of the most engaging conductors of his generation, heralded for his artistic maturity, emotional insight, and insightful programming. He appears frequently with the world’s preeminent orchestras, and regularly collaborates with top solo artists both in concert and on critically lauded recordings. During the 2017/2018 season, Mr. Bringuier will make two appearances with the Orchestre National de Lyon, in November 2017 and May 2018. The season also includes engagements with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Finnish & Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestras, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfonica de Castilla y León, Gulbenkian Symphony Orchestra, and Malaysian Philharmonic, among others. Bringuier makes his seasonal return to the Los Angeles Philharmonic in March 2018, with a programme featuring Dvorak, Symphony No.8. Mr. Bringuier’s other programmes this season feature a vast range of repertoire; additional highlights include Dutilleux’ Symphony No. 1, Lutosławski’s Les espaces de sommeil, and Brett Dean’s Amphitheatre, alongside works by Shostakovich, Ravel, Salonen, Gruber, Varèse, Berlioz, and more. Named Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich in 2012, he now enters his seventh season working with the ensemble. MASTER PLAYERS FESTIVAL: BIOGRAPHIES Violin faculty Justin Chou is a performer, teacher and concert producer. He has assisted and performed in productions such as the Master Players Concert Series, IVSO 60th anniversary, Asian Invasion recital series combining classical music and comedy, the 2012 TEDxUD event that streamed live across the Internet and personal projects like Violins4ward, which recently produced a concert titled “No Violence, Just Violins” to promote violence awareness and harmonious productivity. Chou’s current project, Verdant, is a spring classical series based in Wilmington, Delaware, that presents innovative concerts by growing music into daily life, combining classical performance with unlikely life passions. As an orchestral musician, he spent three years as concertmaster of the Illinois Valley Symphony, with duties that included solo performances with the orchestra. Chou also has performed in various orchestras in principal positions, including an international tour to Colombia with the University of Delaware Symphony Orchestra, and in the state of Wisconsin, with the University of Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, the Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra and the Beloit-Janesville Symphony. Chou received his master of music degree from UD under Prof. Xiang Gao, with a full assistantship, and his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, with Profs. Felicia Moye and Vartan Manoogian, where he received the esteemed Ivan Galamian Award. Chou also has received honorable mention in competitions like the Milwaukee Young Artist and Youth Symphony Orchestras competitions. University of Puget Sound, Honors Program Tacoma, Washington April 18, 2016 Fuhrman !2 Introduction and Presentation of My Argument My story of how I became inclined to write a thesis on Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major is both unique and essential to describe before I begin the bulk of my writing. After seeing the famously virtuosic violinist Augustin Hadelich and pianist Joyce Yang give an extremely emotional and perfected performance of Franck’s Violin Sonata in A Major at the Aspen Music Festival and School this past summer, I became addicted to the piece and listened to it every day for the rest of my time in Aspen. I always chose to listen to the same recording of Franck’s Violin Sonata by violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Jeremy Denk, in my opinion the highlight of their album entitled French Impressions, released in 2012. After about a month of listening to the same recording, I eventually became accustomed to every detail of their playing, and because I had just started learning the Sonata myself, attempted to emulate what I could remember from the recording. -

Musikfreunde | Magazin der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien Mai/Juni 2017 Zu anderen Gipfeln Lionel Bringuier Lionel Bringuier, 31, der nun mit den Wiener Symphonikern im Musikverein debütiert, wurde schon als 28-Jährger Chef des Tonhalle-Orchesters Zürich. Die Schweiz wird er bald hinter sich lassen. Sein Weg führt zu anderen Gipfeln. Es war ein Sieg der Jugend. Und ein Abschied von den alten, allerdings äußerst verdienten Männern. Zu Ende der Saison 2013/14 trat David Zinman als Chefdirigent des Tonhalle-Orchesters Zürich zurück; neunzehn Jahre lang hatte er das Orchester geleitet, geprägt, geformt. Mit ihm zusammen zogen sich Elmar Weingarten als Intendant des Orchesters sowie der Präsident der Trägergesellschaft zurück. Die Trias hatte Bedeutendes geleistet und war in Ehren ergraut. Darum war da und dort ein Seufzer der Erleichterung zu vernehmen; die Zeichen standen klar auf Generationenwechsel. Als Präsident gewonnen wurde ein mit allen Wassern gewaschener, bestens vernetzter Vollblutpolitiker aus der Stadt Zürich. Und für die Nachfolge in der Intendanz war Ilona Schmiel geholt worden, die in ihren neun Jahren beim Beethovenfest Bonn ebenfalls manches in Bewegung gesetzt hatte. Von Paris nach Los Angeles Schwieriger gestaltete sich die Wahl eines neuen Chefdirigenten. Das Orchester hatte nach Verjüngung auch auf dem Dirigentenpodium gerufen – was verständlich war, hatten dort doch neben Zinman Großmeister wie Bernard Haitink, Herbert Blomstedt oder Kurt Sanderling den Ton angegeben. Der Blick des Wahlgremiums fiel daher auf Andrís Nelsons, der sich jedoch lange zierte und dann in letzter Minute der Umarmung entzog. So war guter Rat teuer. Just in diesem Augenblick fiel der Name von Lionel Bringuier, dem 1986 geborenen Franzosen, der zur Gruppe jener sehr jungen Dirigenten gehört, die in unseren Tagen so viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. -

The Wharton-Sinkler Estate, erected in the early 1920s, is a fine example of the work of one of Philadelphia’s greatest architects, Robert McGoodwin. This massive Tudor fantasy in the Samuel B. Rotan mansion, “Lane's End,” in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, now known as the Wharton-Sinkler Estate, was modeled after Sutton Place in Guildford, Surrey. McGoodwin assembled architectural fragments and whole rooms from numerous English buildings: the massive oak front doors were salvaged from Muchelny Abbey and date to 739; the stone-slab floors in the hall were salvaged from Warwick Priory and date to 1124. Mrs. Wharton Sinkler bequeathed the estate to the University of Pennsylvania in 1971, which operated it as a conference center and wedding venue until 1999. Wright7,8 · EJ Milner‑Gulland9 Accepted: 10 July 2020 © The Author(s) 2020 Abstract Wild animals play an integral and complex role in the economies and ecologies of many countries across the globe, including those of West and Central Africa, the focus of this policy perspective. The trade in wild meat, and its role in diets, have been brought into focus as a consequence of discussions over the origins of COVID-19. As a result, there have been calls for the closure of China’s “wet markets”; greater scrutiny of the wildlife trade in general; and a spotlight has been placed on the potential risks posed by grow- ing human populations and shrinking natural habitats for animal to human transmission of zoonotic diseases. However, to date there has been little attention given to what the conse- quences of the COVID-19 economic shock may be for the wildlife trade; the people who rely on it for their livelihoods; and the wildlife that is exploited. In this policy perspective, we argue that the links between the COVID-19 pandemic, rural livelihoods and wildlife are likely to be more complex, more nuanced, and more far-reaching, than is represented in the literature to date. We develop a causal model that tracks the likely implications for the wild meat trade of the systemic crisis triggered by COVID-19. -
