He is also Professor Emeritus at California State University, Sacramento where he served on the full-time faculty for 30 years directing the symphony orchestra, as well as teaching music theory, history, and composition. Eylar has guest-conducted extensively throughout Europe and Asia, including prestigious music festivals in Japan, Austria, France, and Australia. He is also a composer of international renown whose works have been performed on five continents and at many of the world’s most prestigious venues. His Dance Suite for Trumpet and String Orchestra was recorded by the Seattle Symphony and his Rhapsody for Orchestra (1994) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Recent commissions have included a Sonata dedicated to well-known German bassoonist Frank Forst and a large-scale percussion duo titled Two Klee Sketches. Eylar recently completed a work based on the Orpheus legend, scored for large symphonic wind ensemble, that was premiered on June 1, 2018 at the Mondavi Center by the UC Davis Concert Band under the baton of Pete Nowlen. bios WIND SYMPHONY & ORCHESTRAS PETE NOWLEN One of Northern California’s busiest musicians, Co-Director Pete Nowlen has been the California Youth Symphony Brass Coach since 1992 and summer camp co-director since 2007. He was appointed Wind Symphony Director in 2019. Pete is the Director of Concert Bands and Horn Instructor at UC Davis, where he joined the faculty some 30 years ago, and was, until 2016, the Horn Instructor at CSU Sacramento. Pete also serves as the Artistic Director of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, Symphony d’Oro - Rancho Cordova, and Camerata California Chamber Choir and Orchestra. bios STRING ENSEMBLES K ATI KYME Kati Kyme’s dedicated association with the California Youth Symphony has been a joyous and inspiring exchange. The String Ensembles Program has expanded to encompass two full string orchestras totaling to 150-180 players and continues to fully prepare these musicians for advanced placement in the Associate and Senior Orchestras of CYS. She is also Music Director of Berkeley Baroque Strings. As a violinist, Kati is often concertmaster of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and the American Bach Soloists. One of her most treasured accomplishments is the formation of the New Esterházy Quartet which specializes in the music of Haydn and his contemporaries and performs concerts in Berkeley, San Francisco, and Palo Alto many times a year. Her discography is impressive. She can be heard in over 100 recordings of music from 1650-2015. bios WIND ENSEMBLES ROSITA AMADOR Rosita Amador has performed as soloist with several local orchestras as well as a being a freelance professional clarinetist in Bay Area operas, musicals, orchestras and bands such as the Monterey Bay Symphony Winds. She has given clarinet master classes locally as well as at the Music Conservatory in Peru, South America. She is also a founding member of the Klarinet Kapers Quartet. Ms. Amador has been teaching instrumental music in the Berryessa Union School District and directing the California Youth Symphony Wind Ensembles for over 20 years. She has a private clarinet studio in Saratoga. bios PERCUSSION ARTIE STORCH As an active Bay Area free-lance musician, Artie Storch is a regular extra percussionist for the San Francisco Symphony, Silicon Valley, Oakland and Marin Symphonies, and has performed with ensembles ranging from Masterworks Chorale to Metallica. He is a frequent player in the Bay Area theater scene, where he has performed in numerous shows including White Christmas, Beautiful (The Carole King Musical), and the long-running Phantom of the Opera. As principal percussionist for The Skywalker Symphony, his recording credits include playing drums and/ or percussion for movies, television, commercials, records, and video games. He teaches privately and is on the faculties of California State University East Bay and Chabot College where he teaches percussion and directs the percussion ensembles. bios MUSIC IN THE MOUNTAINS RYAN MURRAY Ryan Murray is the Artistic Director and Conductor of Music in the Mountains, the Associate Conductor of the Modesto Symphony and the newly appointed conductor for the Sacramento Youth Symphony’s premier orchestra. An award-winning opera conductor, Ryan is the Music Director of Opera Modesto and directs the orchestra and opera at CSU Sacramento. He is the past Music Director of Fresno Grand Opera, and previously worked as a conductor for BASOTI and The Opera Academy of California in San Francisco. Ryan is a past winner of the Vienna Philharmonic’s Ansbacher Fellowship for Young Conductors, was the winner of the 2017 American Prize in Opera Conducting, and he has recently been awarded second place for the American Prize in Professional Orchestral Conducting. Ryan holds degrees, summa cum laude, in Bassoon Performance and Voice Performance from CSU Sacramento and also holds a master’s degree, with distinction, in Music Business from the Berklee College of Music. he Music in the Mountains Chorus is an Musical Arts Association.
