Not the figures you see on stage or street, for they change with every whim of Paris and are oft not what they seem. But real figures, do they impress your mind? For instance the figure 16,317 which is the actual total of gas space- heating appliances installed in Portland. Does it convey a message to your mind? Does it not instantly startle you with the popularity of Gas as a fuel ... to " 'eat 'ouses with" as the English sailor said to me when I asked him what his principle cargo from Liverpool was. He answered, "Gas 'eaters" . dropping his h's . "Gas 'eaters to 'eat 'ouses with." Of Gasco furnaces we have 3,698, plus 405 Radiator systems of the older type, plus 552 Boiler installations (mostly vapor), plus 3,489 Gas furnaces installed hy others. • Portland Hotel, 1890 by Unknown the Portland Hotel Opened in 1890
Portland Hotel, 1890 By Unknown The Portland Hotel opened in 1890. It had eight floors, 326 bedrooms, and extensive dining facilities, and the design suggested substance and elegance rather than opulence and frivolity. In a sense, it reflected something of Portland’s conservative (some said dull) character. All told, the hotel had cost well over a million dollars and taken years to complete. Railroad magnate Henry Villard began construction of the Portland Hotel, however, his finances collapsed and progress halted for over two years. When George B. Markle, Jr. came to Portland he decided to begin a campaign to raise enough local money and support to complete the hotel. He succeeded in getting acquainted with the “right” sort in Portland and generated interest and capital from notables such as Henry W. Corbett and William S. Ladd. Over 150 Portlanders subscribed to Markle’s plan, and construction of the hotel resumed. Until it was torn down in 1951, the Portland Hotel stood between Southwest Morrison and Yamhill, on Sixth Street, facing the Pioneer Courthouse. When the parking structure that replaced the hotel was in turn replaced by Pioneer Square in 1984, the iron scrollwork gate that had graced the hotel was incorporated into the design of the new public space. THE HYECHRA CLUB The narrator has had a lively interest in The Hyechka Club since its beginning and believes that its history merits recording and dmu- menting in The Chronicles of OkZuhoma, Members of the Club in the past have been interested and its members today are interested in building and supporting a city and a state as cultural centers in which to rear patriotic and Clod-fearing children worthy of the loftiest ideals. Instead of a brief history, this band of music lovers is entitled to a fdsized, two volume publication to report ad* quately all that they have given to the education of young people along cdtural lines and to the wealth of Tulsa and the State of Oklahoma as expressed in the leadership and influence of the known and unknown contributors. Looking over the names of world famous artists that have appeared on its early programs and in its annual Spring Festivals, the words of Warner Van Valkenburg are a fitting tribute and introduction even to this brief history of Tulsa's pioneer organization of music lovers :l "I AM MUSIC. "I am the hymns of the Christian Martyrs in the catacombs; I am the songs of thanksgiving of the kneeling Pilgrime; I am the fugues of Bach, and the oratorios of Handel and Haydn; I am the magic flute of Momrt; I am the immortal symphonies of Beethoven; I am the throbbing mee- sages of Schubert and Schumann; I am the nocturnes of Chopin and the folk melodies of Dvorak; I am the rhapsodies of Linzt and the music- dramas of Wagner; I am the voice of Peter Tchaikowski, crying in the wilderness; I am Brahms and Richard Straues, and Verdi, fulfilling the command of destiny; yea I have breathed upon the harps of MacDowell and Cadman, and have sung of a new world in the west.

Central City Development & Redevelopment Projects Prepared by Heritage Consulting Group May 2018 Purpose: This document is intended to provide a five-year window on real estate development in Portland’s Central City. For the purposes of this document, the Central City includes the following sub-districts: Downtown, West End, University District, River District, South Waterfront on the west side of the Willamette River, the Central Eastside and Lloyd District on the east side of the river. The subsequent pages begin with general comments followed by a summary of projects under construction, projects in design, projects in concept and projects completed in the last five years. Overview: Portland has historically been a very attractive second-tier real estate market. As the largest city between San Francisco and Seattle, Portland has a national and international reputation as a sustainable, vibrant, and trendy city with a legacy of aggressive growth management strategies and robust investments in alternative transportation. It is well recognized for its livability and it continues to attract a highly-educated workforce. Economic leaders are focused on workforce development in the growing sectors of clean tech, activewear, software, research and advanced manufacturing industries. Cumulatively, this has resulted in a marketplace that is largely stable and fueled by consistent in-migration. As in recent years, the real estate marketplace has been extraordinarily active in a large number of projects across all sectors in nearly every geographic area of the city and region. With high demand and less supply, particularly within the housing sector, this has presented a challenge around affordability. Current projects providing notable additional supply may mitigate this challenge in the longer term, while the city continues to explore strategies to spur additional housing development.

Designed to reflect the elegance of the historic Meier & Frank building, the new Nines Hotel culminates years of work to partner public and private sector resources to rehabilitate a downtown landmark. PSU Center for Real Estate • Quarterly & Urban Development Journal • 4th Quarter 2008 • Page 25 Eggleston • Developing the Nines Hotel: Challenges & Solutions Since 1908, the Meier & Frank building has been an anchor for downtown retail activity. While most people think of the building as a single structure occupying an entire block in the central city, few realize that the Meier & Frank building is actually an aggregate of three different buildings, each one built in a different decade. In keeping with the building’s genesis, the current $160-million rehabilitation aggregated many disparate needs of public and private stakeholders. This article describes multiple historic, economic, public/private, design, and management challenges requiring innovative solutions to achieve historic rehabilitation, adaptive reuse and sustainable design on this scale.
