Tonight, we are gathered in this beautiful ballroom to celebrate the work of Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East. With every paddle raised this evening, your support will go a long way towards helping Habitat homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better life. Many hardworking families in our city are in need of decent and affordable housing. Every day we see the impacts of the housing crisis in Portland, especially in the communities we serve. At Habitat, we provide a hand-up, not a hand-out. Families purchase an affordable home and help build it with the support of our staff and volunteers. Together, we can help many local families achieve their dreams of a safe, stable, healthy and affordable home. Tonight would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors and donors. Thank you to those who graciously donated their time, money and items to help plan this special evening. I encourage you to give generously tonight. Please raise those paddles high and often. In the past two years, her family moved over half a dozen times, at one point living in an unfinished basement in unhealthy living conditions. Each move was a burden on Wendy’s children. Her son changed schools twice. Their housing instability caused both kids to experience tremendous anxiety and developmental delays. Despite this, Wendy pushed on. “There’s something I learned in the military, which is to keep going even when times are difficult,” said Wendy. She left the Navy and attended Portland State University, becoming a first-generation graduate. Even with a college degree and stable job, rising rents in Portland make it incredibly difficult for a family like Wendy’s to get their feet under them. Wendy is actively involved with her community and with the PTA. She currently works as an Administrative Assistant where she helps low-income and refugee families connect with learning programs. “I want to help others,” said Wendy. “Before we can help others, we have to first be healthy ourselves.” She hopes to help local public schools develop literacy programs and encourage safe environments for families. When Wendy found out she had been accepted into the Habitat homeownership program, she was overwhelmed. “I cried,” she admitted. “I have the ability to transform my family, and this is a responsibility I take seriously. To provide my kids with their own space and say to them ‘This is yours to paint, to decorate, and to build your dreams on’ means everything to me.” 5 Live Auction 1. Passion in Portland 9.
